i have recently been hired as a racing coach for a Rhode Island area yacht club. our club burned down a few years ago and we have been on the rebound ever since, but for this summer we are in desperate need for some used 420 sails. Does anyone know where i could possibly find some for cheap? and is it possible say, to go to the Boat Locker or local sail lofts to find sponsorship to purchase new sails? like we will put your name all over them if you can help us purchase them sort of deal. any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I'd contact colleges in your area, or the high school sailing teams to see if you can't get help there. They usually have a rotation/replacement schedule for their sails and equipment, and might be very willing to sell entire fleets at a really good price. I know our college team picked up used 420's from Yale at about $200 each. They were definitely used, but the price was right, and we got out sailing. Vanguard may also have some ideas about who you should contact, or may have taken some stuff in on trade.... Worth a call, if you haven't already.

You should post a note on the CollegeSailing.org mailing lists. I know the Univ of Southern Maine just purchased 18 new mains and jibs and probably are willing to sell the old ones cheap. Send me an e-mail and I will send you the contact's name there. Scott

I think you just missed their big one, though a phone call there might not hurt. |

I'm at the University of St Andrews in Scotland but work in Marion, Massachussets in the summer. Our uni program has piles of old 420 stuff from (about) 7-8 years ago- we now use larks. I reckon we probably have about 8-10 mainsails, few centreboards, some jibs, the list goes on, though they are made for international 420s and not club 420s and they are mostly pretty tired. I'm not sure how compatable int'l mains would be to a club rig, you might want to do some research there. If you're interested in some of the stuff we would only be restricted by how much I can bring back on the plane (last flight US-UK I had 8 Lark Mains disguised as a pair of skis!) but we would be happy to sell the stuff off cheap. Maybe $100 for 6 mains and a handful of jibs?
Contact me if interested. crb4 (at) st-andrews.ac.uk or (from the US) 011-44-7817-857-748. Chris |
