well the foilboard _is_ a windsurfer. But it definitely looks like thge non-foil board is faster, although the foilboard may be pointing a little higher. Anyway, what people who are riding them are saying, is that you don't sail the foilboard because it's faster, but because it's a nicer ride - much smoother apparently. Also, they are still very much in the development phase, and haven't really focused on speed. Remember, a non-foil board sets a pretty high standard as far as speed is concerned.

Just curious, why the speed differenece? I guess the foil would create drag and since the non-foil board doesn't have much to begin with...Or is there something else.

We also have no idea of the relative sail areas between them. Looks pretty wild to be sailing along 2 or 3 feet above the water. If I could do anything but stand awkwardly on a windsurfer, I might be tempted to give it a shot.

the non foiling board has a much larger sail than the foiling board in that video. more sail = more speed

the guy on the non foil board is Antoine Albeau. one of the fastest guys in the world in course racing, slalom and speed sailing. earlier this year he managed a few runs along the beach at Tarifa with peaks over 47kn...

Rush who sails the foil is doing an incredible job imo to go as fat as he does on an inherently unstable foil configuration. just remember there are no sensors or flaps on the foil. all trim like height control and steering is done by balancing his weight around.

I do not believe that to be true! More sail equals more power, but you have to be able to harness that power.

I think the prop wash from the chopper is screwing up his breeze...there are several moments where he struggles to stay on the foil.

Despite what Doug Lord says.... I'm sure I remember reading that some of the good designers believe that while foiling is more efficient and lets you get up to high speeds more easily, foilers top out somewhere below where true planing shapes do. This was why Parlier hoped his stepped-hull cat would beat the big foilers, and why moths aren't as fast as sailboards, etc...

Just watching him sail, it looks like a lot of effort to balance. Looks like he "hops" it up to stay on the foil a couple of times. Also, he is not all closed down on the sail. AND he's not hooked in. It looks like a comfy ride, but it looks like a bitch to control. I'll let these guys work out the details and hop on a 10th generation one.

EXCELLENT LINK!!! THANKS. This is why I read the forums....and why I cancelled sailing world magazine. I don't need to read 3 month old news. I'll spend the money on SA wearables.

Isn't this the shop that designed the windsurfer that will be used for the China Olympics?

I would think the board in the air would definitely create drag. Maybe a bunch of lift, but there has to be some drag there too.

In any event, probably as close as anyone will ever get to flying. Not much really connecting the board to the earth/water.

Pretty facking cool.

Not really.

I think the Foilboard is Rush Randle's business. They are marketed by Neil Pryde Maui, a maui-based retailer that is also a N.P. distributor/importer. As far as I know, Neil Pryde Ltd. - the sail making business has no stake in Neil Pryde Maui, but it wouldn't surprise me to learn that Neil Pryde Maui has a stake in the Foilboard.

Rush Randle is a "team rider" but I think that technically he is sponsored by Neil Pryde Maui, not Neil Pryde Ltd, the sail maker.

The RSX olympic board is a project of Neil Pryde Ltd.
