As a closer alternative (and a shameless hijack), the Gig Harbor Le Mans Race is an absolute HOOT every year. Boat start at anchor with the crew below deck. At the start, there is pretty much mayhem. Getting out of the 100-foot wide harbor among all the other boats is also a photographer's dream.

November 11th. Le Mans Race

I will be going a long on this raced again. I'm not sure why. Last year the boat nearly tipped over in the giant waves and our big blue sail got ripped and it cost us a bunch to fix. My husbands friends who go on that race are so crude. Half the time they're screaming at each other and then in Roche they all got drunk and talked like Howard Stern all night.

We are talking about doing it in the Melges. I have an old main that I could put a reef in. I am only scared of that 40 knot blow out of the south on that race. Going around the outside of San Juan Island could be rough.

Speaking of 40 knot winds and big blue spinnakers blowing up. I copied this photo from the RTC web page.
Who are these guys?

If I am around I will do it with you. Do you need crew? We would have to find somebody who will let us sleep on their boat.

We'll be there on Carrera, 1d35, one of the best races of the year.

By the way we were right behind Yankee when that shot was taken, we were excited that we could reel them in a bit, but bumming because they had lost their chute. That was a great downwind run, solid mid to high teens for boat speed.

The previous owner of Yankee was Jim Scurlock if I recall. He owned a J120 and then a J125 but he didn't own Yankee for very long. Was he unhappy with the boat?

Who doesn't know Atalanta? - classic CCA maxi - the one time I sailed her, I was one of like 8 people you need on the bow. I got the spinnaker guy wrapped around my leg during a gybe, and pulled it out just before the load came on - did I mention that the guy was like 1/2 inch fucking wire? I still have nightmares where i don't quite get my leg out in time . . .

Which explains very nicely why some of us here miss the excitment of the old school boats.

So much mast bend and the main is flat as a board. Is that fast?

Looks to me like this photo was taken during a windy stretch at Swiftsure. The guy in the companionway looks to be digging out the #3 for a sail change. That could explain the flattened main and spiked backstay.

Time Bandit has won their share of race, that's for sure. Anda that's not due to the inability to trim sails.

All registered and ready. Too bad they limit this race to 60 boats.
