How in the hell did they ever get the spin around the keel? If you grab either the halyard, the sheet or the guy it might go into the water, but around the keel? How?

Assuming this was on the drop, then I assume it had been spiked at the end of the pole. If some idiot then let go of the sheet as well, and the halyard was let out so quick that the foredeck/midbow couldn't grab the sail and get it down the hatch, then I can see how it could happen. Not likely I know, but once it happened and got wrapped up down there, it would be hell to get off.

A couple of years ago they had the misfortune of hitting a rock off Gurnard, happens to us all at some point.
