Clean's Innerview

So the C Cat is out of the bag - or water in this case. Looks damn cool.

Thanks for sharing with SA.

Never would have known about it if you hadn't taken such a good pic and posted it yourself, Clancy. I sent your pic to Amac (Bladerider designer) to see what he thought about it - he figured out the mysterious bits in about 5 seconds, after I'd been staring at it for hours trying to decide whether it was a foiler. So thanks to you, Clancy!

Fredo was completely upfront when he realized I knew - but then again, it's a bit late for Cogito to go this route. What say you, Steve C?

We're going to do our damnedest to get up there for at least a day, despite conflicting responsibilities at Melges 24 Nationals in Detroit. This is just too cool to miss.

DM, as far as I know this is the first time anyone has combined the sensor-wand of the moth with a catamaran, although according to Fredo, it really is a stable ride. If the guys can do well at the I4C, then that'll make two classes where foils are effective, and faster around the racetrack than non-foilers.

That being said, the power to weight ratio on these two classes are pretty special. I'm not sure how they'll translate to something like an A-cat, but someone is bound to try.

It appears from the SA interview that there will be at least two boats. Possibly 2 more.

One sailboat is a lot of fun. But I learned a long time ago from Ernie, that you should really have two.
So that should be enough.

That Ernie sure knows how to roll .

But one was a shark !

Any talk of a spectator fleet? Who's going out to watch?

Edit: aside from Encinoman. These things are sexy - there's gotta be a fleet out there to watch.

Line up will be as follows for the racing.

Cogito from USA
Rocker from RCYC
Alpha from RCYC
PL VI from RCYC

So 4 boats to watch, starting with some fleet racing followed by match racing.

Match race starts are very exciting in these things, good spectating for sure.

Not so. Doug Pattison used wands on his foiler Force 8 back in the early eighties (sorry, Mothies, it's old technology) http://ntlsearch.bts.gov/tris/record/tris/00685787.html. Following on from his success there were a number of T foil based cats and other foilers around in the 80's.

Incidently, during an interview in 1986, Beecher Moore, the International Catamaran rule writer, told me that he has specifically written the rule (in the 50's?) with a view that hydrofoils would be used at some time. He just couldn't work out why no-one had tried until then. Interestingly, our VPP studies in 1986 predicted that foils would not be fast around the course because the induced drag of lifting the whole craft out did the saving in skin friction drag. New materials and lighter construction has probably changed that.

It's hard to feel out classed when you are rolling Cogito into the water.
Very nifty looking stuff and I'm sure a splendid time will be had by all.
Full marks to Fredo, Cunningham, Blunted and the rest of the team for having the balls to do the build and putting something credible on the water.
Bring it on.
If we get our ass kicked by these guys it will be because they have done a good job.

Why more people aren't into this shit is something I could never understand.
Relative to other adventures in sailing this is a whole lot more interesting and exciting.
The budget is probably less than a Farr 40.
You actually get to try something new and figure out stuff that hasn't been done a million times.
But I also know that actually trying new things frightens people.

I know that most of us can never have Steve's abilities, but I wish more had his attitude. Go Cogito!

Edit: The Canadian thing with the twin tailpipes is really cool too. No losers in this one.

--------------
According to James Grogono in "Icarus-the boat that flies" The Pattison brothers on Force 8 used forward facing "feelers" similar to those used on the Hobie Trifoiler; they move the whole foil. The real pioneer of the wand was Philip Hansford on "Philfly"in the 80's who used dual differential wands controling the flap on two fully submerged foils.
Recently, the Chapmans(see below) have developed a 16' catamaran usng wands for flap control as well. But the modern pioneer of the wand is Dr. Sam Bradfield who refined Hansfords concept on numerous boats including the 16' Rave , EiFo and the 40' SKAT.
And, of course, John Ilett was the first person in history to apply wand technology to a monohull foiler.
Congratulations to Fred and Magnus-looks like an exciting boat that will no doubt improve the technology!

It's been an incredible summer of watching these C-Class cats terrorize the waters around Toronto. I often see them from my office doing Mach 10 out there. It's lead to many an unproductive day.

I even got to drive one once. Unbelievable.

My favourite thing about the program is the guys behind it. They've been really cool at showing the interested guests how the wings work, etc... They've done a lot for sailing. I imagine they've inspired a lot of people. Class acts all of them. In fact, I'm beginning to believe that the C in C-class is for corinthian. Nice work boys.

I highly suggest people make the trip up to spectate. It's gonna be one hell of a show with a bunch of great competitors.

See you out there. (except for the days I'm going to be forced to watch from my prison cell a.k.a office)

Clean: hope you make it up. Haven't seen you since Mexico. I'll be taking by J27 out to spectate that weekend and you are welcome to join. But, it'll be like watching an F1 race from a Lada. You might want to find a fast powerboat.

May the best team win.... but I think the true winner here is the sport of sailing.

- Goldfinger.

Steve, you (and the others involved in C-class cats) are a breath of fresh air to this sport. Congratulations.

After reading the crap about finn sailor childishness in the past day, I was a little discouraged that the sport is heading the wrong way.......

I'm going to do my best to get up to Toronto to watch the action.
