1500nm offshore on a Thompson 850 ...now them's some big kahunas

After taking an overall win in the 400nm Round White Island race, the Thompson 850 "Waka" has been entered in the 1500nm Round North Island two handed race... crewed by none other than anarchist BooBoo!
This race can through up some real nasty weather and I reckon it's pretty ballsy to front up in a boat that most owners would only race around the cans before retiring to the bar at the end of each day... if they pull it off (and no reason why not) then I reckon it tops the guys who did Chi-Mac in a Melges 24 for out there uses of a sportboat!
Pretty cool boys... good luck! B)

Clean... haven't got anymore info other than what's in the link I originally posted as I only saw it this morning. Booboo is crewing on it in the race so a PM to him might get some tasty insight into their plans.
RNI two-handed starts in Feb 08. NOR here: http://www.ssanz.co....s/RNI%20NOR.pdf

870 is production oriented with a liner and noticeably more freeboard. 850 more a full-on race boat, and frankly much more handsome than 870 and is one of Thomo's raciest designs, which is saying something.
Dunno how many made but very few. T850 Go Dog Go was only one in US and just an awesome boat, did KW its first year but was saddled with a sightly overcooked rating...then did better at home in Pacific northwest in some big regattas. Last I heard was a strong rumor it had been sold back into New Zealand where they appreciate rockets like that.
The design is much more like a smaller Wairere than it is, say, a scaled up Viper 830, so it's not totally crazy to take it offshore.

Go Dog Go got sold to a guy either in NJ or LIS (I just do not recall which). It was listed again about 8 months after it went East. No idea where it went from there.

Offshore's one thing - the RNI is a long fucking race, even broken up. Guess it's a bit easier knowing that you're never too far from shore.
The TBoats site says that the 870 has around 1700 s.f. of downwind sail area, and weighs 4200 lbs. How does the 850 compare?

And even though you are never that far from shore there are long stretches with few places to shelter that don't involve the prospect of a nasty bar crossing (Cape Reinga to New Plymouth and New Plymouth to Wellington) or no shelter at all (Wellington to Napier).

Will (might) do shore crew for anyone who needs it - done it twice - and it's gotta be better than bashing ya brains out round the North Island ;)
Jonty and BooBoo should have a lot of fun

It was at Milford YC (in CT) owned by a guy, who likes to buy boats but doesn't seem to get the potential out of his boats and ends up selling them - I think the 850 was his 2nd out of three sportboats he has (unsuccessfully) tried to make go and subsequently dumped

The 850 is more spartan inside and hence lighter - also (IIRC) lower freeboard - even lighter and slightly taller stick - all in all the 850 is a race boat the 870 a racer/cruiser - albeit pretty quick

Was it re-painted? I seem to remember Go Dog Go was blue?? The uphill portion round the N island is going to be a bit of a beating in Waka but the downhill bits will be a blast.

Yeah it was blue ya? It's a very small boat compared to mine - which isn't exactly a monster but I've 100mm (4") ((6" to not-real-blokes)) more on the topsides. Whenever we sail 'Men at Work III' around the harbour we always keep the hatch shut for ferry wakes.
A fair bit's been done to the boat to get it NZ coastal ready, Booboo can tell you more if he gets time, just a bit more watertightness around prods n that sort of stuff. They've been putting plenty of effort in so here's hoping they have a bloody good time. Also hope I'm not talking out of turn - this isn't my gig after all.
"one of those doyle shit fight sails" - I'm intrigued and been trying to work that one out? Come on, show and tell

The 850 was a custom build, whereas the 870 more of a Production build. There was a serious attempt to get a modified albeit only a slightly longer version of an 870 to do the Hobart, time, funds and crew problems unfortunately holted its participation, however having worked intimately with Thommo on some Australian projects I have no doubt that the boat will be strong enough.
The Thompson's have always been regarded as the Roll Royce of Sportsboats, and one thing is for sure Waka will look after its crew, as all of the T boats are a pleasure to sail.
Good luck Fellas.
