Hi All,
Early in the new year is the Australian 'Moth' championship which will be held in South Australia.

With Rohan Veal opting not to compete this year, throws open the question of who do think could win.

You have Luka Damic (currently the fastest man in NSW) who came 2nd to Ro last year, as well as Amac who has proven that you don't have to be 28yo to be competitive on a well set up BR with top ten placing in the worlds. Robbo, who has tacken posession of a new BR.

I'm not too sure if Scott and Les Thorpe will be competing.

Steve Donovan and Ben Crocker will be sporting brand new prowlers as will Chris Day who will be steering a new borrowed prowler.

This is my shot at the placings;

1. Luka Damic
2. Amac
3. Mark Robinson
4. Les (if he is competing)
5. Ben (big water and strong wind is expected)

If Scott is competing, I believe he will win.

Have a great New Year.

Your thoughts

Grant
Your top 5 will be a little bit out as Mark isn't competing and Scott will be sitting in a coach boat in Port Phillip Bay.

If the stories from Melbourne are true, I cannot see anybody getting close to Amac, who has been treining non stop. Add to that the training camp they have been running at Black Rock, I suspect that the amount of practice will pay off. Amac learnt his lesson in Garda. Then, our American visitor, Bora, has done a lot of sailing since getting his boat and will have benefitted from the training camp, plus he has a good track record in other classes. He will be a real threat. Then, Chris Day has been getting some sneaky practice, which I think will pay off. However, my top 5 depends on conditions.

So, my top 5 for a blow are

1. Amac
2. Bora
3. Les
4. Luka
5. Ben

If it is lighter

1. Amac
2. Bora
3. Luka
4. Chris Day
5. I am not sure! Maybe Les if his boat is more competitve than he thinks!

Bora is a phenomenal sailor and one hell of a nice guy. Just don't dress up as a bathroom shower if he's around.

Go get 'em, Bora.

Sorry guys, only Aussies are eligible for the title. People who aren't in contention get ignored on the racetrack, and can sneak off with a heat "win" when they aren't being covered as they aren't in title contention. This happens when top interstate visitors sail in state titles in another state, e.g. when Rohan sailed away off into the distance and Luka still came away with the NSW state title last year. This means that Bora simply doesn't count in the rankings.

Amac will be quick and win some heats, but he will need to fight his trend of having a couple of shockers as well.

Luka will have a great regatta or a shit regatta, with nowhere in between.

Ex world champ Chris Dey will also be quick, however his borrowed prowler simply won't have the boat speed of the Amac or Luka.

Les will be quick if it blows, I haven't seen him in the lighter stuff lately so not sure ...

So ...

1. Luka
2. Amac
3. Chris
4. Les
5. ???

Uh... don't dress up as a shower?

Never mind ... I don't need to understand it.

And.... who's got midship wand.

Doug, even I can see the tress through the forest. Try to simplify things in life.

Here is part of a note I sent to Simon a month ago;

You will enjoy Wallaroo. It's very much a small country town. Sailing is in a bay and if the seabreeze is in, it does tend to get pretty windy there but not too choppy - don't reckon I have ever sailed there in less than 20kn. Can be a little sharky, but we don't worry about it. They chase after fishing boats and are scared off by sailing boats. I did go for a swim across the bay one day and about a k in, thought wtf am i doing, but I am still here.

Its not unusual. When Rohan came to the UK and sailed the Moth Europeans he didn't become European Champion because he wasn't a European. He won the open event, but not the European champs.

I am a resident in Dubai but am a Brit, but grew up in Dubai!! Do i sail for UAE or GBR at the worlds? Feel like UAE as it will get noticed more but does that mean i am not allowed to compete in the Europeans? ha! Maybe i put UAE on one side and GBR on the other........

There always used to be an 'open' trophy that non brits would win if they won the regatta - not sure if that is still done or not though. (For the UK nats). Maybe one of those damn aussies won it and never gave it back????

Bora - its easily fixed, go to the local trophy store, buy a $5 trophy and donate it to the Aus class as a perpetual open trophy. ;)

Better yet, find a nice piece of driftwood, carve it into the shape of a foil and daggerboard, and engrave "Australian Moth Championships, Perpetual Open Trophy" into it.

Done.

A bit of an update! Ben isn't going so that screws most predictions. And with JFunks conditions forecast, things become interesting. It could be that only the first 4 or 5 boats actually make it round the course!!

Anyway, we will see a little more of the form guide as we expect to see Luka and a few others from St Georges sailing with the Balmoral boys today, with a pm forecast of 15-18 knots, 27 degrees and great sunshine!

Well if it was run this week coming, there would be no wind.

I am about to do the FD Nats and the temp is set to be above 36c (100+F for you Yanks) for the whole week and that means no wind, (well there may be a strong northerly in the am but no seabreeze whatsoever). :(

My vote is for overall is Luka. I had a chance to hang with him for the last week. He's a good sailor, and a genuinely nice guy.

My vote for top US is Bora.

And I've got to vote for Gary Ireson for top UK (FU,UFF)

Absolutely, Luka is one of the nicest blokes you would ever want to meet.

I'd say nearly all the skiff guys will be hoping Luka comes up trumps.

May the Force be with you!!!

Smart money is on Luka from St George(not Georges), though not prepared to wage any $$ until the Lord has spoken!

According to the poll on luka's site 70% of the people think that the ideal weight of a moth skipper should be 80-84 kg
