In Dago for PHRF, the occasional OD in SoCal area and the twice a year cruise, would you pick a J24 or a J80?

Go J/80. Don't buy the one that's currently for sale in SD if you want to race.

J/80 is way more sport-boatish. It meets your "occasional one-design" requirement, and has a track record of smoking results in the downwind point-to-point races that Southern California enjoys.

J/80 is also a whole lot easier to cruise. The cockpit is much more comfortable than a J/24, and you can do everything, including fly the chute, with just two people who never go forward of the mast.

(Bias note: I own a J/80 in Long Beach.)

Move the fuck out if you're going to insist on calling it Dago. That's a derogatory swabbie term from WWII that most San Diegans would rather see go away.

I know Ed calls it Dago, but it has the same insulting tone as calling San Francisco by Frisco.

Other than that, welcome to San Diego.

Curious that you are thinking of buying a boat that has virtually no one-design presence in San Diego. The J80 will get you lined up with the students at J World and the J24 will get you all the competition around here as an Optomist.

There is however a wonderful Mac 26 fleet down in South Bay that would be more than happy to welcome you.

Wanker.

I guess you missed the "occasional" and the "SoCal" part of my original post? I suppose "SoCal" is derogatory as well.

and to think we might be relocated to "Dago" for work and we will have these two as neigbors. What could possibly be derogatory about "Dago". I grew up in "San Antone" and have a condo in "Port A". Its just a short nickname, kinda endearing.

J80...But I'm carrying an obvious sport boat bias. All I know is the 24 is just not a fun boat at all...it's a dog. But the talent in the class is phenomenal. The J80 will produce the best fun factor.

Does it really matter what you get?
Do you think it's the boat?

http://home.san.rr.com/underdogsailing/

Just look at the boats racing locally. Old J24s out number J80s 8 to 1 It may be old but at least there is someone in the class.

Oh wait! With your J80 that makes what? 1 boat? With only one J80 you could actually WIN the regatta!

By the way, Coiler is correct about the natives and Dago. You sure you are not an import?

Thanks for putting my web site out there! Nobody can say we don't have a lot of fun.

Care to reveal your boat?

I was actually hoping to get some solid feedback on a 24’ – 27’ boat with a trailer that I could race in both PHRF and the occasional OD in San Diego or So Cal.

The two options I came up with were the J24 and the J80. Both offer occasional OD racing in the So Cal area.

Any feedback or other options would be appreciated.

You can have like three race ready J24s for the cost of an 80. Yeah, the 80 is better layed out, faster ect. But, for all that $, it should be. The 24 is still a lot of fun and has top notch racing. $30K+ for a fixed keel, 26 foot boat that will get walked by $25K Melges is a little hard for most to swallow.

Bash: The problem with a Melges is it doesn't fit the guy's criteria.

He wants to do some PHRF racing, and Melges get slaughtered in SoCal PHRF because the local PHRF board got tired of losing to them and changed their rating.

He wants to do the occasional cruise, and a Melges isn't a great choice there. The difference in ease of sailing, and cabin accommodations, between a Melges and a J/80 is substantial.

Granted, a Melges will smoke a J/80 boat for boat. But like most boat buyers, this guy needs to balance several criteria, and a J/80 is about as good an answer as he's going to find.

Don't get me wrong, I think the J80 is way cool, I'd like to have one if there was a OD fleet of them nearby. But the damn thing is way expensive. For that kind of $ you could get like a race ready J29 or something. The 80 is just overpriced. Saying "J24 or J80?" Is kind of like saying, "I need a car, should I get a camry or a BMW 5 series?" Apples and oranges.

Coiler,

You should know better than to open yourself up like that. A rookie move, no doubt. In that spirit, DAGO!

From the description of the original post, it's really hard to provide a solid answer.

If money is at all an issue. J24.

If you have a loyal crew of 4 others, J24. If not J80.

Any sort of distance sailing, J80.

dago.

Get the J/24. Buy one for 6/8 grand. After 2/3 years you will be so sick of that piece of shit you will sell it (for 6/8 grand) and spend the money it takes to get a boat that is actually fun to sail.
