The latest: Leo's just turned the corner from demolition to restoration. With his new keel timber staged and all the live oak needed for the project milled and on-site, my money's on completion. Hang in there, Leo!

I guarded two seasons (well, 1.5 seasons) as a SD City seasonal before I got picked up at the FD. The advantage of being one of the lowest seniority seasonals was I was extra and not assigned to any specific beach. That meant I got used to fill in for sick and vacation staffing anywhere. Some guys hated that because you didn't have a home, you didn't have regular start and stop hours, if a beach wasn't busy you were the first to get sent home, and once in a while you'd get sent down to the bay to guard something like Crown Point or Bonita etc (yuck!!). What I liked was I probably worked almost every beach we had at one point or another, and often got to ride the wet seat in the jeep with the Sgt or Lt. Jeep days were fun because you backed up pretty much every significant rescue which meant I went into the water a lot on those days. So, I remember PB & MB really well. I liked it there because the boardwalk in MB was always entertaining and the rescues were pretty easy. On the weekend, all it took was a short walk down from the tower and someone was certain to feed you great BBQ. "Hey lifeguard, want some food?" Uh.......yes.....

I've heard in Asia, and other shithole regions, they only keep one in IDC for a max of 90 days during which one is fed like a king. At the 91st day mark you are transferred to the Soylent Corporation ... the end of the line. Product is sold to street vendors. And resold to the public.

^ The entire rest of the OR, JPN, FRA and Artemis design teams. Also, mathematically speaking, 2 out of 6 = 33.33% - you don't get to randomly subtract 3 from 6 just because it fits your narrative to do so. The whole point of the AC50s - including downsizing them from 62' - was to create sustainable, ultra high tech racing, in arguably the fastest sailboats on the planet. I would think they'd be better off outside the aegis of the AC, with all of it's politics and limited schedule. They are unique, and still fresh - they've only had a single regatta so far - and as has been noted above, there is nothing else on the water remotely at that scale that is 100% foiling around a race course including tacks. Rather than looking at a series as 'competition' to the AC, I see it as complementary in the sense that it creates a deeper pool of talent for future ACs, in a format that will allow new potential sailing superstars to develop their game in boats where the outcome is not mostly dictated by design decisions made months or years before the event.

To wrap up leg 7, tommmzzz remained impaled on Tierra Del Fuego, so the last posted results stand. No one has notified me of any errors, so I am going to pretend that there are none. Leg 8 starts at the extremely convenient time of 01:00 here. It looks like a low wind beat for the first few days, then dealing with the heffalump traps of the conditions south of Recife. I suspect that this portion could easily ruin someone's race as I suspect that forecasts will be inaccurate and changes will be swift. I'm looking forward to it. See you at the start line.

Less than 7 days to the start of the next leg, what time will it be for everyone? For me it will be 3am, Monday morning, so a auto start for me.

Cheers TR. Quite a hot contest for 2-4th however. And no pressure mom don't choke! (TBF considering his world rankings its not particularly likely we will catch him) Just one discard?

Hey Tunnel, Shorthanded Et al Thanks for all the outstanding work you guys have done on this. Please note that Vibroman is retiring from the rest of the regatta. RW work travel and some upcoming offshore racing plans are preventing me from giving the game the attention it needs so rather than adding clutter to your already complicated job please record me as DNS going forward. If time permits I may pop in for the odd race but don't worry about scoring See you on the water Internet Thanks VN

Great video and storytelling! I live in the heart of the Naval Oak belt on the Gulf Coast and that operation in Georgia is a national treasure. When they showed the big Live Oak that was proclaimed to be the largest I thought back to a tree that was known as the 'Inspiration Oak' that was right across the road from my old boatshop/cabinet shop on Fish River in Baldwin County Alabama. I managed to find some info on that tree which was 'girded' by my landlady or one of her inbred bastard sons not long after I gave up my lease on the shop and moved to New Orleans to learn 'plastic boatbuilding' at Seemann Composites. Sometimes I think I should kept my backwoods boatshop but that was 38 years ago. That tree was 28 feet in circumference and a team from Auburn University tried for four years to mitigate the damage caused by the vandalism. They even built an "ICU" tent around the base in a valiant effort to save the tree to no avail. This was from March 2002 The tree was left standing for decades until fears of injuries from admirers from falling limbs led to the decision to cut it down as seen here. I think that the Auburn foresters were able to count the tree rings and dated the tree at 500 years old! Full story here http://blog.al.com/live/2013/11/inspiration_oak_may_be_gone_bu.html

Every dollar put into a wood boat is a dollar less that you will ever have. There are two reasons to put money into a wood boat. 1) You are crazy. 2) You are in love. It is of tremendous help to be both. Allen L-36 #5 L-36.com
