    True, but I imagine there are a lot of builders that would have like to cash in on the Laser's sucess and would have paid royalties if there wasn't the restrictive contracts between BK, PSA, LP, etc. The fin's at the other end of the spectrum, so developed within the rules that it almost may as well be OD. But (and this is quite harsh I apreciate) it's fleets are pretty small, and I think this is because it's an old difficult boat to sail well and attracts a certain kind of person (and the odd Olympic hopefull). If it wasn't an Olympic boat I doubt it'd be a viable class and it doesn't really reprisent a type of sailing most ous do or want to do.

    It's also a Solo and makes the Laser look like a modern design with good ergonomics. Although the Laser hasn't been the Olympic boat for too long, it took 20 years to reach that point. And despite the explosion of GRP dinghy designs in the 90's, there isn't really another international class that's come allong since the 70's. Plenty of classes have tried before the Areo/Zero, even RS's own 300 was supposed to be a light-ish singlehander, with a choice of rigs, etc, but for whatever reason's, it didn't. Personaly I'm not in favour of SMOD's at the Olympics, it makes it too much of a comercial interest to get your design selected (Bethwait's 49er Vs RS's 800). There should be a clause that whatever design is selected can be built anywhere by anyone upon paying the apropriate royalties*. Then the regatta/olympics can supply the boats for the games to remove the ability of teams to buy the best boats (White Formula Tornado, Devoti Finn etc). And change the boats round every 2nd or 3rd cycle. So that there's a comprimise between it being the pinacle of the sport and long term costs for poorer nations. The Finn and 470 are getting a bit long in the tooth to be considered the pinnacle of sailing for any other reason than they're the incumbent. *Which could be subject to a fairness test. Unlike Cycling where in theory any team can race on any UCI aproved bike and as part of that process the bike has to be available comercialy. Which has lead to the GB team spinning off it's bike production arm which now sells the frames developed by TeamGB for about £25,000 each!

    . That's actualy not quite the point i made (although you, you could argue it both ways), my point was neither is a windsurfer and neither is really competition for each other. Hardly stogy either, same weight as an epoxy phantom even with the racks (and it has a centerboard for 'beach sailing'). I'm happy with my choice, you're presumably happy in whatever it is you sail if you're not getting an aero. My main gripes with the areo were the ergonomics of the controll lines and centermain, that and i quite like the biger hull / more power of the Halo (or blaze if its blowing a bit). Either way we're both right, the aero meets its goals amiably, but those goals weren't the same as the Blaze, otherwise we'd have a race round the cans and sit in the bar wondering why boats with center toestraps still get designed. Hence my earlier point, I doubt many people will see them as competition for each other. In an ideal world you could have a pontoon of aeros, blazes, sportsboats and a cruising yacht and still not feel like they overlapped too much in the types of fun on offer! My 'stodgy' 'inferior' blaze at the weekend. (Deliberately dragging its arse, it was that or commit dinghy soddomy crowding into the leeward mark a bit quickly!)

    Except our fat boy's rig is 11.5m, not '8 and a bit, call it 9' and has a PY of 975 :-p Kidding asside, they're completely different boats. The aero is like driving a Caterham 7, light, manouverable but not that quick in a straight line. The blaze is more like a big American V8 muscle car, point it at the next corner (mark) and hold on. At the Burghfield open last weekend I wasn't the only only one still out after 6 hours of racing over 2 days in 20-30knts of wind just drag racing up and down the lake for fun (although we'll frequently be the last class out in those conditions). The aero is fun too (as is the D-zero) but they're a different type of fun, and I don't think many people would be choosing between them and a Blaze, it's about as comparable as a windsurfer (light weight, choice of rigs, etc).

    But surely, like the optimist and the topper it's not the fact that they're actualy any good or not, it's that anywhere in the world theres 20+ of the things out on the nearest puddle racing a Sunday. There's probably already plenty of ~14ft ~7sqm planing singlehanders that can be rigged in 10 minutes and car topped. But they're not a Laser / Kirby Weekender / Torch , so they're not popular. Which is why this bit's important, the Torch can't be different in any way, otherwise there'll still be Lasers and something slightly better called a Torch which would die on it's ass as there's already 200,000 sailors who like them because there's 199,999 others to race against! Although maybe once the whole things cleared up we could get a nicer sail, just not right away!
