Agree with Soma.Asked Reni Gelder when he won the Trans Tasman what his secret was hanked on headsail plus twin headsails he had spent a long time changing the angle of the centreboard almost no added weight AIS so he could sleep safely . His partner said if Reni could get dehydrated water he would,she was amazed when I said we had it in Aust then peeved when I said you just add water to reconstitute it. Oh and apparently he sailed from 5 years old in Austria. Austria with inland lakes, high mountain peaks with treacherous winds prepares one very well for ocean racing.     Hi All. Every sunday on Port Moresby Harbour the lakatoys, proas if you prefer, would race and occasionally join in with the yachts. It was a sight to see the ancient proas,lakatoys , racing and when it came to turn ,shunt, the helmsman would lift the steering paddle and belt down the other end of the boat and regain control before everything turned to shit. The point here is that proas, lakatoys, have been around for milennia. They are a reminder of where we have come from. No one nation has the answer to safe fast cheap boating. Learn from the past. Lakatoy racing was accompanied by much laughter and beaming faces ,much the same as any regatta participants. Go Solabri, make it work.

    Hi All I grew up in Port Moresby,New Guinea,overlooking the harbour.Abandoned my family at age 8 and moved in with Ken Andrews family in their boatyard.The lakatoys,small proas,were used for runabouts and most of the heavy lifting was done by twin hulled catamarans up to 60 ft or thereabouts. It wasnt unusual for Andrews to load a catamaran with thirty large bags of rice sugar etc for transport to villages up and down the coast.I sometimes wonder if those catamarans are still in use. Unpainted and without antifoul they would only last a few years but were a very "green " method of transport.Best of luck Solarbri. Bottman

    Very first thing I noticed was the bulwark height front and rear,or is that front and front or rear and rear.At 300mm or so it is just an accident waiting to happen. Needs a handrail. Bullfrog has a similar problem when I purchased her.Had two handrails made for the cockpit as a small stumble rearwards would see one going over the back.Scary at two am 5klms off the coast and the only one on deck.What happened when the skipper disappeared on Kleen Breeze?     Proa your chances of survival in a car crash is almost nil over 60kph.. Problem is getting ones brain to survive being decelerated sufficently before it is turned to mush on the inside of your skull. Same with a bicycle fall or being hit in the head. In a head on with another car in Oz thats a 200kph crash. UNSAFE AND STUPID AT THAT SIZE Well of you dont drive or ever reach speeds over 60kph then I apologise , otherwise you could be seen as stupid by the general population. Bottman

    The most common unstayed mast is on every sailboard. That works very well because the rightng/control force/canting force is applied at the level of the boom. The tension/compression member is a human body.Cheers Bottman

    Brisbane to Gladstone 2018 only

    In reply to offtherails, a rudder , at therisk of being pedantic, constantly undergoes torsion, and tension and twisting and bending. Even when the boat is at rest in the water these forces are acting on the rudder to some degree. Balance of the rudder can have a dramatic effect on the helmsman. The forces are always acting on the rudder but the balance of the rudder,that is the area of the rudder in front of the shaft compared to the area of the rudder behind the shaft, can determine the effort needed to steer the boat. Another trick I use is to put a hydraulic seal at the top of the ruddershaft tube($10 for 2inch shaft seal) and another at the bottom of the rudder shaft tube and filling the void with lanolin grease.After four years the helm was as light as when first assembled. I first did this on a fifty foot steel yacht . A mast, whether stayed or free standing, undergoes similar stress to a rudder, the difference is in the length of the levers and the engineering required for the materials used. Cheers Bottman

    What on earth? Cast iron clamps? What country are you in? Bits of clamp flying around the workshop? I would think 2205 hollow bar would be far stronger and more resilient,and lighter than solid and but thats dependent on if youn can get it. The rudder on Bullfrog was smashed badly when I hit Bribie Island recently with the stainless steel rudder shaft remaining straight and reusable and the Oregon timber bits and fibreglass splintered/smashed. I grew up in Port Moresby and watched the lakatoys racing against the yacht club boats every weekend in 1959-1965. Rudder was next on the list to be replaced as I have no idea how old it is and what the stainless steel in it is. Larger diameter hollow bar is vastly stronger for a given weight compared to solid bar.Bottman PS If one side of your mast is in compression then the other side must be in torsion - basic engineering.

    Foiling injuries

    Hi All. I am both a Paramedic and a Nurse .Also a Midwife.Non practicing because of a head injury. When I was injured it took an hour and a half before the ambulance arrived-First Responder initially then proper ambulance. Having worked in that industry for thirty years I fully accept the delay.Staffing,earlier callouts,ramping because accident and emergency departments are full etc etc all impact on emergency depts. Working in the Torres Straits on Badu, 60k north of Thursday Island as a sole nurse forced me to summon up all my previous knowlege regularly. One duty on weekends was to be paramedic at the football.Had to fit this in with the on call clinic duties. The travelling Midwife turned up and she equired about the plates and cooking utensilsI in the freezer. Reason was I was in a two nurse clinic on my own. Some days I was so tired it was easier and safer from a food poisoning point of view to stick everything in the freezer. Point is our emergency sercices are often over extended. If you want emergency services on hand at regattas the best thing to do is an emergency resus course. In Australia St Johns Ambulance and your local ambulance are good places to enquire. I have attended countless in hospital and out of hospital arrests and the most important survival intervention is rapid initial response. A lot of industries now require supervisors do a first aid course. Also extremely handy in any emergency to have trained help. If you are in the States and follow basketball then you have probably heard of Patty Nona.He is a Torres Straits Islander who has a lot of talent and when you realise the total population only numbers thirty thousand then his achievement is even more remarkable. I now have someone who has sailed for years and we are going to teach me to sail again. Possibly doing a tag along following the B2G in a few weeks time or at least watch the start from the water in Bullfrog. Have decided to adopt Smiley Williams saying "Jib up" (in reference to crane operating as well as a sexual connotation) and Ian Johnston also has a goodbye saying about keeping the mast vertical .     Hi All. Going back to my agricultural college days it was generally taught that on a tractor from starting to roll to being under the rolled machine was less than a second. Who has reaction times like this? I dont.Only way to avoid this is to pull back from the edge early. I made rockwalls for many years with a Case skid steer loader as stress relief from Accident and Emergency Nursing. Worked a treat. Same same with sailing until recently when I put Bullfrog onto the beach on Bribie Island.That took about five minutes after engine failed due to fuel line sucking air,anchor not deploying due to hard grease and failing two tacks and a gybe. Over confident after a head injury and being told I would never drive again let alone sailing single handed.So ,I feel for anyone who fails. Only solution is to keep going and somehow pay for the repairs. Fujin is a superb boat,keep going,or as Smiley Williams ,crane operator, says JIB UP. Bottman

    Foiling injuries

    Hi All. Was working on a gas pipeline in a remote location in Oz and the supplied snake bite kits were useless when demonstrated on a guy who was a bodybuilder because his arms and legs needed ten kits of bandages to immobilise a limb. My solution was to supply a roll of gladwrap (plastic food wrap foil) in each vehicle with the first aid kit.Worked very well. Also very good for deep flesh wounds and broken bones.A little bit freaky because you can see the blood oozing out under the plastic. Used this to stem the flow on a guy who put a grinder through his wrist in the boatyard. Cheap and very effective. Much like myself. Cheers Bottman

    Boardhead, agree 100 percent. When delivering Bullfrog from Sydney we were doing 26knots down the face of the waves and 18 knots up the rear of very long swells. Absolutely thrilling with zero fear factor even when we headed north and the reflected waves added to the wind waves. She would just start to dip the leeward float as the next wave lifted it back up. The memory of that trip has kept me going as I slowly recover from my head injury. I am still looking for crew with disabilities for long cruising voyages.Bullfrog is 40ft long 36 ft wide with a 40hp diesel engine. A very capable Crowther design from the eighties set up for single handed sailing so the helmsman is the only one needing to be awake at night.Cheers Bottman
