    Jules Verne Trophy 2020

Best time to find out if something falls apart at speed.

Perhaps fishing some very thin Dyeemea first around the rudder and then between top of the blade and hull? Only needs a small gap. Chinch tight and hang the chain on that. (With yet another line to secure the container.) Does not sound fast but certainly better than swimming. I'm sure we'll learn more in the future.

    Brexit WTF, WTF

With all the talk about taking back control there is still the chance that someone in the EU27 decides to show Boris what sovereignty means. There is a lot more time to find the flies in the ointment on the EU side. I'm sure there will be at least some additional internal horse trading on the EU side. The UK is not the only European nation governed by strong man...

Now that the deal is here (or perhaps not rejected by parliament, yet) truckers are no longer news. Chances are also that everyone who can tries to be on the right side of the channel at the end of the year. Standing in line while customs systems get deployed is no fun and does not make the company any money. What is the status on the financial industry? The short term contingency agreements from a while back and nothing else?

Look like we have to wait and see what is actually in the deal. No details and much last minute delay so far. Talking a lot about the not that important topic, here fish, is a way to get the actually important things into the agreement. Question is of course which side managed to do that best. - And which side managed to include the most epic blunders... Looks like potatoes could be one of them. UK export of potatoes is a go! Export of seed potatoes - not so fast. Now Scotland has a great opportunity, finding a new market for 80% of them...

Looks indeed like another round of "But will it go thought parliament?" is imminent...

Easy enough to have the EU with "Sorry, not our fault that the treaty talks with the UK went nowhere." on the Bingo card for 2020. I guess it's time to add "and the DUP believes the Ursula saying that instead of Boris" to keep at least some of the suspense going.

Looks like it. Certainly a lot of pitting. Does he still have the tillers on the rudders like in RdR(?) pictures?

And guess who does not like that idea one bit, all the increase your NATO spending rhetoric notwithstanding.

IIRC Gitana is repaired and waiting for weather. At least they did not reset their website yet, it still has the color codes. Currently black, no start in the next 96h / 4 days.

She had some serious trouble getting the required miles to enter the race under the keel. Breakage left and right. Now things are working roughly as expected. A successful repair and keeping up with the leaders boosts confidence. Half a dozen retirements to date, and not being among them also helps. Second great cape is in sight, 2/3 of the race done. Well, not really but it is a major milestone.

After the cold war there were a few interesting comparisons, looking at changes in food recommendations and cooking magazine content over the years in the GDR. Specifically what got recommended or discouraged in which year. Quite obvious what was going on when you look also the actual production numbers. (Easy to access, now that the GDR is gone.) Time to expand those articles in a bit.

As far as I understand UK several fishers sold or leased some or all of their fishing rights to EU fishers. Any idea how that gets handled? Or is it one more thing still in the air?

Nice. So comms problems instead of computer failure. IIRC relatively early and the only hint we had were sat phone interviews, no video. Last major computer failure I can remember is on Vestas. Not enough caulking in the winch pedestals and consequently too much water in both computers. Maybe we'll hear a bit more what went wrong once Fabrice makes it back..

Didn't one of the boats in the last VG have an electronics/comms problem and still finished near the front of the fleet? Or was that another race?

French farmers blocking the border to Germany. Oops, wrong time of the year. French fishers blocking UK ships trying to land fish. I bet nobody saw that coming. - Didn't the same story play out a few weeks ago with ships from the channel islands?

    Vendee Globe 2020

As far as the Vendée Globe goes they French Navy will take them. The VG is owned and organized by SAEM Vendée, the company president is Yves Auvinet. The majority of that company is AFAIK owned by the Département Vendée where Yves Auvinet is the elected President of the Council. The VG has such a high profile in France and worldwide. It seems unlikely that the French Navy will leave a French tourism bureau hanging dry. Doing the transfer is good PR and that in turn is an argument why other nations in the region should do the same. In some of his talks and interviews Boris Herrmann said that due to Corona there was a lot of additional political horse trading required on all levels to get this VG and before that the Vendée-Arctique to the start line. Rescue and potential exposure to Covid requiring the isolation of the rescue crews being a hot topic. (A major reason for skipper quarantine and testing.) Having a navy ship patrol the part of their operational region where the race passes through is easy enough.

While the keelbox is largely intact the rest of the boat is no longer firmly attached to it. If things go wrong that leaves a huge hole in the boat. Would the rest hold together for a moment or fail similar to PRB? Certainly a moment to think about survival.

Seems really unlikely that Sam can continue. The keel system including box is basically ok, but: "The longitudinal structure around the keelbox is all cracked." Maybe someone can translate what she said in the video:

Sam has one, lets hope the system was set up for crash recording.

AFAIK 18 boats with OSCAR and only Boris has the autopilot link. Boris said somewhere that OSCAR gives maybe 20 seconds warning, not enough for manual intervention

Sebastien Simon on Arkena Paprec again on the damaged side and slowing at the end of the report.

    Vendee Globe 2020

It will take a while to talk to everyone involved and generate a good report. What did they pack, what did Kevin grab, what did he manage to keep hold of. What did he think he had. What did he do, why did he do what he did. And so on and so forth. Some answers could be as simple as "I did not think of that at the time."

    Vendee Globe 2020

There will be questions about the structure. As designed, build and then modified over time. The bad part is that information about what happened is basically limited to what Kevin saw. The good part is that there is no reason to hold back with construction data. All skippers and the class are very interested in finding out what went wrong. The other area for me is the packing list for the rafts. If there is once again the risk that a boat will fail that fast relying on grab bags does not seem sufficient. (IIRC the VOR had a lot more stuff packed. Can't be bothered to find the list right now.) A call or text message from Kevin with what he thought at the time "I'm ok and in my raft. Lets try again tomorrow with more light and better weather." would have removed a lot of stress all around. Esp. when he can send a message with his GPS coordinates. Say a Garmin inReach or something similar. How about both an AIS PLB and personal EPIRB fixed to the survival suit? Certainly one of the places where they make sense.
