    Mocking Ads on Craigslist

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/boa/d/sailboat-lancer-40-center/6695737383.html I would never want to be seen "sailing" like that, let alone post it online to sell the poor thing.

Those are called "Hull Extensions" (capitalized indeed, so the abbreviation is - very manly - HE). They can be folded up, if needed, it states, but as far as I can tell that requires the removal of a bunch of bolts... It is a good thing they are "heavy duty," since I can imagine that the forces on these pos extensions will be great. But: WHY???

Am I too negative in suspecting a scam? First the boat was in Colorado (on CL if I recall correctly), now on the east coast (again?)??? Do I remember that correctly? During his Ebay career the seller has mostly bought stuff. Now he has 3 sailboats for sale all at once. Seems fishy to me...

No shit! Glad to hear I am not the only person who runs into such idiots. I mean, who would want to do business after such an exchange? Last week I had a long text exchange with someone selling all kinds of crap. First they did not know whether they had what I was looking for (stainless tube), then they said they might have it, but it was too long. I stated I could cut it and asked for the address and availability, after which they replied I could not cut it and that I first need to find the bridge before crossing it. Some years ago I would have called them in a failed attempt to convince them they are morons, but instead I just took a deep breath and deleted the thread. Done.
  5. There are different kinds of learners and for some the sheet will work, for others the words, and for some (like myself) the combination of pictures and words. And don't forget: overall, the RRS are common sense.

Ridiculous since "I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member."

    Ugly dodger collection

"statenjacht" is not a type of boat, it is a designation of its use as an official yacht of the state. The king, prince, or other officials can use it, and I think many provinces have their own "statenjacht." I have no idea why the person who posted this is hoping for salt rain water. It is a strange mix of styles that combine the "platbodem" (flat bottom) round front with a stern that seems to come from one of the ocean going trading ships. A very peculiar design.

lol! "realistic fire paint job" Haha, yes, I really thought the boat is sailing so fast it is on fire??? The name of the boat perhaps provides some context (not taking things too seriously) but still, "lipstick on a pig" comes to mind. To most the boat is probably less desirable because of the paint job.

    Someone has been naughty!

I guess that is a tongue in cheek remark, since they are not. Ainslie even describes how to select the best one (measure the rake on a bunch before you buy one, there are slight variations). Still it is all within a range, and real cheating will be very obvious. At bigger sanctioned events rakes will be checked and it would be hard to hide the evidence of a modification. Of course, there is a lot of boat preparation (and boat choice, as the rake example shows) that can make a difference. Even with a Laser, you have options, such as carbon tiller, length of hiking stick, mainsheet and other control lines. All these small things will make it easier to sail the boat to its fullest potential, but you cannot change the potential. I don't know the Nacra 17 but it seems that this was a serious attempt to modify the boat to make it faster, and hide the modifications (and then deny them). I would say an obvious case of cheating. Ever since the VOR incident I have been a bit suspicious about Martinez and it seems, unfortunately that there is a longer history. I am always wondering how these "sportspeople" feel about the races they have won because of cheating. AS

Spirit of Hungary Imoca in flames

basically, boat was sold to two canadian drug traffickers who set it on fire as the French customs approached. Customs had followed them for some time, suspecting drug trafficing. 1.5 ton of cocaine was found after the fire was put out.

I don't think that is the companionway, but that is fortunately not my problem

    Epic Boat Loss

Good news indeed! Although it must be a disgusting mess inside. Besides the hull and rigging little will be salvageable, I would think.

Some nice things can be said about the boat, but not about its condition... That is a lot of money to ask for a big project. The instrument panel is insane!

Spinnakers - How big is too big?

That seems too big indeed. I fly mine from the deck and it is slightly longer than the hoist. Mine is - I think - at 104 or 105 % and I certainly would not want more length than that. Spinnakers can be shortened, indeed.

    Kiwi's AC tri foiler ???

I was wondering the same. And with that length the forces must be extremely high, I would think.

Strong constitution and Trump? Turdeau must be a slip of the tongue... related to eating feces? Despite the fact that he states otherwise, he sounds rather barbarian.

Not sure how funny it is when someone pretends to sell a boat they actually don't own. Using the same pictures and description as the ebay ad: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1983-J-Boats-J29-/283022196016?hash=item41e56ffd30%3Ag%3AZkkAAOSwPN9bDr-o&nma=true&si=R%2BVObbMoefc8J4f2uIdFUfg5Zh4%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 Poor attempt at scamming and pathetic, yes.

Not CL, but ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Male-Mold-Hard-Dodger-for-Sailboat/292628640185?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D52954%26meid%3D0b20abf85f8c4954a97e9dfa8e1a389a%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D221768111788%26itm%3D292628640185&_trksid=p2481888.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3Ad6e03e4c-8927-11e8-9d7d-74dbd180e9e3|parentrq%3Aa465aa8c1640ad416b753d19fffb31b7|iid%3A1 This person is selling a mold for a dodger. It sure will fit your boat, right? It seems this person calculated the time and materials to create a mold for his own (unknown) boat and thinks they can get the investment back.

Talk this Sunday at Sausalito YC

The SF Bay Area is full with attitude. Millionaires fighting other millionaires over their view, over the location of their fence, where their neighbors pool should not be located, or how their neighbors removal of a shed has caused their pool to crack. Their deep unhappiness is covered by the shiny new luxury cars they drive. Yes, I live here and despite all that I still love the place. Besides the crap described there are tons of great folks too, and obviously the sailing and generally speaking the natural beauty is hard to beat. Actually, I do not think unwelcoming yacht clubs are a specific Bay Area problem: nation-wide welcoming yacht clubs seem to be the exception, not the rule. Try getting into any YC that charges a high initiation fee. It will not be different in Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, or Rhode Island. Over here my experience has been pretty good with YC's. I have been to a bunch of clubs as guest when I was either crewing or dinghy sailing (I can think of Richmond, Berkeley, GG, SF, St Francis and a few in Alameda). The experience might be different when you show up outside of an event you registered for. I remember one instance at St. Fancy when at registration most of us had made up the YC we were a member of. During the awards ceremony the commodore made fun of those made up yacht clubs, all in good spirits. When entering they do ask you to take off your cap and not crash a wedding in your wetsuit, but I can live by those rules especially when rewarded with a ridiculously spectacular view while having tacos and beers. I am not familiar with the club in Sausalito.

Getting a pre purchase survey out of state?

I know this is not answering your question, but are you planning to bring her to Hawaii? for what it is worth: I am not sure I would want to buy a boat 6k miles away...
