how to fix splayed mast track

I recently purchase a Cape Dory Typhoon. About a foot above the entry point for the mainsail slugs is a 2-3 inch area in the luff groove that is splayed so that the slugs come out. I can put a sail stop at this point, but this will not allow me to reef and the stopper keeps coming loose. Is there a way to either bend the luff groove back to normal or is there an insert that will reform the proper shape at the splayed area ?

mast vang attachment for 19 " Typhoon

Thanks. I am going to try that and do the same on the boom with a sail stop to keep it from sliding forward. If it doesn't work out, I can always use the bails

O.K. I appreciate the advice. Don't want loose bolts flying around.

The mast fitting for the boomkicker would keep it from sliding up

That's the obvious answer. I was trying for something less expensive that I could do myself. But the bales win out.

Thanks for the warning about the slug. Guess I will just bite the bullet and have a bail attached.

I thought of attaching to the pin at the mast step, but not sure if it is strong enough. The two horn cleats seem too high -by the way-the first photo is my boat.

No, the boom kicker just supports the boom obviating the need for a topping lift. It is also in light air to slightly lift the boom making the main fuller. I am sailing on the York River- Yorktown, VA I lived in NC for 23 years and sailed my previous boat out of Oriental. Where are you located ?- I guess Durham. I lived in Chapel Hill and despite the 3 hour drive each way, went sailing almost every weekend.

I would need a rigger because I have zero DIY skills. If you want something broken, I am your man.

"With the boom kicker, won't a vang be unnecessary?" They do two completely different things. The vang pulls down. The boom kicker pushes up- substitutes for a topping lift.
  13. I plan on installing a boom vang and a boom kicker on my 19' Cape Dory Typhoon. Trying to minimize cost (rigger)and drilling the mast. Thinking of using a stainless steel sail slug at the bottom of the mast (deck stepped) held in place by the boom kicker attachment . Any thoughts.
