After building a 3 storey house, one totally non-negotiable criterion for when I built my new house was single storey. My knees appreciate that immensely. Just funny, when I bought the old house in Sydney, it was really quite old - and still had the original outside toilet in its own little outbuilding in the back yard, from when they first ran the sewer system. Functional and a good spot to escape from the children... FKT

Where do you live again? Probably one of them is in the back yard... Anyway I've got 2 toilets on my boat. The 2nd one is a porta-potty for use in no discharge zones. FKT

I'd argue against that, too, were I a bit more bored. Don't like your chances of finding a copy but UNESCO put out a pamphlet on what was called the BOB drive, short for Bay of Bengal drive. Basically a sort-of version of a longtail but without the long tail - motor and prop assy with rudder swiveled up out of the water. Fitted to 20' and up open fishing boats. Single cylinder diesel, maybe a dog clutch, V belt drive to the shaft. Now that's way lower tech than an outboard. Bit more realistic for a yacht, something like a Yanmar YSE8 or 12. I have a Chinese copy sitting under one of my benches. Integral fuel tank, hopper cooled. FKT

Fuck, the house I co-own in Sydney is worth at least $1.5 million nowadays. I bought it for $80K back in 1984. It has 5 bedrooms, 2 studies but only 3 bathrooms though, and one of those is also the ground floor laundry. 2 professionals, 3 kids, often a long-term international visiting scientist, later years the kids' friends sleeping over then the adult daughters and partners. It's not that big. In fact, it turned out to be not big enough. FKT

We thought that at one point so we had a 30' workboat designed/built with twin 200HP outboards. When we needed a second one we had the naval architect re-design the hull for twin diesels with Hamilton jets. OK special case, we were operating in the Antarctic & sub-Antarctic. The thinking was we could take the o/bs off and service them in a relatively warm workshop. Problem was, they needed a lot more servicing and sucked fuel at an unbelievable rate. The diesel boat was a lot more forgiving in all respects. Annie & Pete Hill were proponents of the no engine/low tech engine theory - they had a Seagull (God help them) on a sliding bracket. Until they spent a season sailing in the Falklands - and fitted a diesel. FKT

I have a junk rigged schooner with steel tube masts and galvanised wire rigging. Made all the spars and did all the sewing for the sails myself. And a 36HP diesel engine with 22" feathering propellor. I'm quite comfortable with appropriate low tech. All you guys pushing outboards on boats not originally designed for them must have a lot better luck with your weather than I do. Couple days ago it was forecast as westerly. We sailed out of the bay on a westerly all right, pity it was southerly and a lot stronger in the Channel. Fast crossing then a run to the north while the wind in the next big bay up was N-W so fire up the diesel to punch through a half metre chop that would have had an outboard on my transom cavitating at least 50% of the time. WRT Wharram cats I have the catalog he put out a long time back with the basic specs of the various hulls. Hannah Taylor and her BF sailed a 38' one from South Australia to Darwin and made some decent vids along the way - Sailing Tangaroa. Worth watching some at least. They put a deck pod on as many people do because as designed, those boats bring a whole new meaning to 'cramped'. FKT

Disagree. A Yanmar 2QM diesel is low tech. A Honda outboard is high tech. FKT

Make up your mind - either we let them learn from their own mistakes or we intervene and force them to stop doing shit we disapprove of. You can't have it both ways. I'm over trying to reform places, frankly, let them learn the hard way if they can't learn from other countries' examples. And I for one am not willing to provide aid without strings. Not happy with my conditions? Fine - find your aid elsewhere or fix your own problems. As for life expectancy, my father died just before his 70th birthday. I hope to do considerably better than that. Couple of my friends are still actively sailing in their mid 80's. Anyway, the USA is still fucked and still allowing a huge number of people to die due to complacency, wilful ignorance and in people like Mikey's case, deliberate intent to cull the aged. Wonder if they'll crack 400K dead before the inauguration. FKT

Which is why in a number of cases my attitude is, you got yourself into the shit, you won't change what you're doing to get out of the shit, I'm not getting involved. Not a matter of wanting to be like us, unless you think low infant mortality, decent education for all and a reasonable life expectancy is something nobody but the current 1st World aspires to. I'm not interested in interfering and imposing anything on other countries. Australia isn't the USA. The only places in recent times we've gotten involved is East Timor and the Solomon Islands, both places we were invited in and we left again. OK we got sucked into Afghanistan thanks to the USA and I was opposed to that then and I still am. FKT

Some I'd agree with you WRT colonial exploitation. Others, not so - all their own work. Zimbabwe is a classic example of how to turn a nett food exporter with functional health, education and financial system into a total basket case. Venezuela is a more recent entrant into the shit leadership, corruption, political abuse and economic collapse leading to shit public health list. And I take zero responsibility for the shit-show that PNG has become. It's certainly not because we ripped the place off while it was under our control. FKT

A lot of those countries' problems have root causes in shit leadership, religion and overpopulation. First World can't fix any of those issues, the solutions have to come from the locals. Bright spot, Argentina has just decriminalised abortion earlier than 14 weeks. A start at least. FKT

Yeah agree. $60K would be more like it, maybe higher than that. I'd like there to be a mechanism where they could basically work their way out of it somehow. FKT

Yeah agree about the top private schools. Not exclusively so but - it's weighted that way for sure. Probably need a better assessment method, dunno, it's a tricky can of worms. I've got quals in at least 3 separate fields because I got bored. Other than my first degree and postgrad qual, my employers paid for them Never paid HECS in my life. Reckon I could get another postgrad degree for free if I tried but - too many projects. Anyway I'd like to see HECS or similar capped for kids from poor families and rebated in full after 3 years if they successfully graduate & get a job in their (broad) field. The rich kids can look after themselves. FKT

Funny thing - you wouldn't believe (and knowing you I mean that literally) the number of middle-aged North Shore and Hills women doing women's studies and other lightweight degrees at Macquarie University back in the 80's under the Hawke-Dawkins revised HECS scheme. The nice loophole was, they were all fully supported wives with school age children and time on their hands. They had no intention of getting a job and as they had little personal income, no intention of ever repaying their HECS bill. Now *THAT* was middle-class welfare writ large. How do I know this? I knew some of the women doing it. Things haven't really improved much with HECS IMO. Still a heavy burden on people coming from a poor working class background. I preferred the system of fee free university based on year 12 scores. Top 5-10% get a scholarship. FKT

Won't help - I still couldn't be fucked bothering even if I do qualify on the intellectual disability category and never carry paper charts. Hey, I touched bottom up the top of North West Bay the other day. I was watching my Simrad chart plotter too. Do you think the plotter is to blame? Or should I actually have been paying attention to the shoreline? FKT

You start to understand why he became a political science professor. Took me less than a week to read Bleak House. The English teacher used to feed me what she thought were interesting books and let me get on with it. I've always loved reading. FKT

Martial law , fuck the constitution

You could have just acknowledged that you'd engaged in hyperbole and were wrong, you know. OK a foreign concept to a political science professor for sure, but still - you're wrong. As for Trump's actions in accordance, I'd say no. Treasonous - probably not on my understanding of the term. Seditious, most likely. Just for you, because you seem to lack the ability to find & quote actual references... https://constitutioncenter.org/interactive-constitution/interpretation/article-iii/clauses/39 FKT

    The Ageism pandemic

Actually there are heaps of guns, just not certain types. I own a few myself. Don't let facts or ignorance stop you making baseless claims though. Yeah dead is dead, but some methods are tidier. I've no time for the anti-gun people who use this as a stupid argument but that's a different (and utterly boring) topic. FKT
