Yeah I don't disagree with that - any Govt attempt to force employers to pay more than said employer's estimate of worker value will always result in some form of avoidance strategy. However in a lot of cases it's not that the employer can't still make a good profit, it's that they want it all. One of the reasons a Govt lost power here was trying to go too far in altering the power balance between employers and employees. The root cause is too many people with low or no skills and decreasing numbers of entry level jobs. Not everyone can sit on their arse, stare out the window and pretend to be working like computer programmers can. Even ditch digging has gone - I can hire a small excavator and do it myself cheaper than paying someone else. And we don't even have undocumented immigrants to do the dirty work for us (well, we don't have many anyway). FKT

Yeah but structuring your workforce so nobody has full-time hours in order to avoid on-costs, having zero-hour employment contracts and other techniques to keep relatively unskilled workers living hand to mouth doesn't help at all. I see a lot of that happening here, where people are juggling 2 or 3 part time jobs to make ends meet. It's damn hard to find time to further your education under those circumstances. We've automated a lot of jobs out of existence and this process is ongoing. FKT

    I still call Australia home

We do it all the time to people who've not bothered to take out Australian citizenship regardless of how long they've been in the country. I don't have a problem with that either. I realise that you want to let everyone who turns up in, and refuse to countenance removing people who can't obey our laws, but most Australians disagree with you. FKT

How are they going to deport him? He's in a Turkish prison. It does look like Dutton has fucked up, though. Never mind, we can jail him if he ever returns and then put him on a permanent control order (which I consider to be a quite severe violation of rights, incidentally). FKT

Nobody has ever suggested revoking citizenship based on employment status, not even Meli, so you dragged that one straight out of your arse. Should have left it there. FKT

If they renounced all violence, acknowledged that Australian secular law overrode religious teachings, agreed to abide by Australian law, gave convincing sureties that they actually *meant* it, yes. People can change. However they'd only get the one chance and any backsliding on their commitments and they'd be gone. FKT

retiring overseas..anyone done it? thought about it?

I can rent my house out & live on my boat, which I can take wherever I feel like going. Problem is I already live in an idyllic spot so Bruny Island is as far as I'll probably bother with. If I head north I need to go a long way to get somewhere with few people and a decent climate. My personal choice would probably be Chile as NZ doesn't really count for Australians. All those lovely convoluted waterways and not as cold/expensive as Canada. But yeah - assuming you rent not sell your Melbourne house that should return $400-600 a week, maybe more. That'd help a lot in covering expenses. FWIW I think it's worth doing as long as you don't burn any bridges. Greece wouldn't be my choice but - shrug - the idea has a lot of merit if you can make the financial side work. FKT

Yeah - Greece is a basket case WRT well-paying work. Hence the very cheap cost of living. Meli's idea has merit if you don't mind being a rich ex-pat exploiting the cheap living conditions of the natives. One fly in her ointment though - she can't export a taxpayer's pension for more than I think 6 weeks a year, so private income including superannuation only. FKT

On the last two, I doubt it. It's easy enough to block transfers and fine/jail you for giving money to proscribed causes/people. You're only supporting killing people by proxy after all. Besides, as you point out, there are a hell of a lot of people with potential dual citizenship. That would serve to limit any extensions to this law. I'm prepared to fight that battle as & when it arises. In the meantime I'm more than happy to remove citizenship from people who want to go and fight for proscribed causes and have the Govt do the best they can to prevent such people from re-entering Australia. You might be happy to have them back and living on the dole near you but I'm not. FKT

Found an engine yet? If you get this far with the Sabb 30 HP I'll happily take it off your hands, provided it's got the controllable pitch prop setup. I've always wanted one of those to play with. FKT

So what? It's illegal to fight in foreign wars without permission. The only difference is, the mercenary expects to get paid. Basically, it only applies to people who have or can obtain dual citizenship and who choose to fight in foreign wars/conflicts without permission, knowing that they are breaking Australian law while doing so. Fuck them. I'm more than happy to let them leave and never to return. They choose, it's on their head. FKT

That'd be a good start..... No, on this one I'm afraid that I agree with you. If they're Australian citizens by birth, they're in a different category. However, if, before they depart, they're informed that leaving Australia and participating in a war/conflict/terrorist activity overseas will lead to loss of their citizenship I'm good with it. At that point, it's their choice. FKT

It's got opening bronze ports and a few winches. Call it $100 for each port, $50 for each winch. Lead ballast, $2000 a tonne. Minus the cost of removal and scrap, probably a wash if he gave it away. Could happen if someone asked, I was offered a 36' steel boat in somewhat better condition for free if I took it home with me. I passed but he did find someone else to take it on. FKT

American Farmers are big losers in TPP deal

Tough shit. You heavily subsidise your wheat farmers and exports anyway, to the detriment of ours. I've no sympathy at all for you - after all, you bitch about China subsidising steel exports and raise tariffs against them for it, why should you guys not have the same treatment? You've been playing both sides for so long that you think it's a law of nature that you should. FKT

Girl with patreon account goes sailing in hot place

Yeah, I've seen a lot worse. I think they're nuts tearing it apart though. It's a cheap ferro boat, even if they have the time, skills and resources to build a complete and gorgeous new interior, it'll then be a way over-capitalised cheap ferro boat. Fix up the wiring if it needs it, sure. Rip out any redundant wiring, sure. Replace hoses, check/replace sea cocks, sure. Other than that, leave the interior alone until experience shows you what you can't stand. Probably swap out all the old lighting for LEDs, better reliability and less power draw. I'd be dealing with the engine, drive system, cooling system, standing rigging, running rigging and sails myself. Unless the object is simply to have a floating apartment, in which case, a ferro hull isn't a bad choice. Doubt I'll watch much - I don't find wide-eyed naivete all that interesting and I already know from personal experience what needs to be done. FKT

Yeah, couple weeks ago. I've been meaning to drop you a PM, get an email address & send you some pix. Still sorting through instrumentation issues and I still need to make the sail battens, install the electronics, hook up the echosounder transducer to a computer etc etc but, hey, it floats and after adding another 500kg of ballast I'd deliberately not fitted until splashing her, floats on her lines. Long time coming. FKT

A .223 with a good scope takes care of that problem out to maybe 300m or so. Around my place, it's the possums that trash the fruit trees. They're a bit more of a pain to deal with because I'm too lazy to go out with a spotlight & rifle at night. Netting in the entire (small) orchard area is the permanent solution. So far I've been too lazy to do that either. I tolerate a fair amount of damage from the wildlife because I like living with wildlife about the place. I don't mind sharing the fruit, I just wish they wouldn't trash the trees. FKT

Man I know has a steel boat built in Germany prior to WW1. He lives aboard and sails it to lots of places. The boat is 60+ feet long and displaces some 42 tonnes. Yeah it's had various amounts of plating re-done over the years but welding steel is easy and the finished job is just as strong as the original material. Modern epoxy paints have made a lot of difference. WRT replacing a steel deck with a ply one, sure, it can be done, but you'd better make sure you have a properly designed waterway for the timber-steel transition, preferably made out of 316 flat bar & angle. If you don't do this properly then you're guaranteed trouble down the ways. Doesn't matter what magic goop is used, the different expansion rates are a guarantee of trouble. One reason why there is *zero* timber bolted/glued to any metal on my boat, and what timber there is, is f/g-epoxy covered & painted. Clear finish brightwork is for wooden boat people. FKT

If for example it's teak bedded in Sikaflex or similar and it's badly weathered/coming loose, *but* the steel deck underneath is sound, I can see that. Ugly, but not a leak hazard. But on the provided information, shrug, who knows. Lotta boats for sale, up to the seller to provide decent info/pix to attract attention to his. FKT
