Can't see how that's going to work out - you guys elected Anna Bligh and the latest one with the un-spellable surname.... what's your excuse? WRT politicians I'm sure we live in an idiotcracy. Dover hey - she probably did raise the average IQ there (whoever she is). Mind you that wouldn't be difficult.... FKT

That's becoming a problem - bloody useless escapees from the mainland bringing their idiotic attitudes with them (I moved from Sydney so I'm an earlier exemplar of this). Fortunately I'm pretty safe from the influx. Lydia hopefully moved to Sandy Bay or another suburb close to what passes for the Hobart CBD. In 3 weeks I'll be in Sydney for a couple of months, reminding myself just what I like and detest about the place. Bob Carr banning jet skis off of the entire Sydney Harbour has to rate as the only enduring achievement of his time as Premier. I'm taking a small sailing dinghy with me and it's only 5 minutes from my house to the launch ramp. FKT

Sharks, stingrays and far too many arseholes in power boats. Jet skis count for double in the arsehole stakes. Plus, the water might be clear there but the Brisbane River is a dirty polluted muddy ditch, not a patch on Sydney Harbour or the Derwent estuary, particularly the D'Entrecasteaux Channel area. But please, don't believe me and more particularly, don't come here. You'll hate it. Truly. FKT

That is exactly it. In order to surrvive in a market you have to watch to see what the market is doing. Tiy have to look to see what people above you and below you in the pecking order are doing right and doing wrong. sadly, google assumes that if you like sailing you must therefore like tits I'm trying hard but honestly, I'm failing to see what the problem is, here...... Yes. Marketing is the real enemy of humanity Agree with reservations. The problem with internet ads is the tech they use is such that they are DETERMINED to get your attention - hence pop-up ads, sound, Flash, other techniques to make it damn near impossible to avoid seeing the ad. Phones would be even worse IMO. Fortunately I don't run anything that's tried to show me ads yet. Anyway I run AdBlock on my computers and I have no intention of stopping. If that makes more sites financially unviable then perhaps they should examine their funding model and stop being so bloody offensive. Newspapers mainly got funded by classified ads. If you didn't want to read them then you used that section of the paper to light the fire, line the birdcage, mulch the garden etc. Different thing entirely to a pop-up ad that's designed to be hard to dismiss *and* plays some shitty loud music at you while slowing down your computer. My first university degree was a double major in population ecology and geomorphology, mainly coastal & estuarine. The climate has been changing for as long as the planet has existed and will keep right on changing regardless of what we do or don't do. I live on the edge of a drowned river valley, caused by sea level rise over the last 20K years, due to global warming. I'd far, far rather a 2C to 4C temperature rise than the reverse. Can you explain WHY you expect climate to STOP changing? And as a second order event, just what means you suggest we use to accomplish this, with estimate of likelihood of success over time? If you can't, then I'm afraid that my 'woe is me' quota in life is already full and I'm going to go right on not giving a damn. FKT

Not me.Well obviously you don't get out very much if you don't care. For instance those looking to explore the NW Pacific incl Philippines and Japan??? Thanks to El Nino this area is sadly now nearly 12/12 in the Typhoon department with no safe season, only some months safer than others. I get out plenty. I think it's (AGW) just a bunch of made up bullshit to line the pockets of the snake oil salesman selling fear. Buy into it if you choose to, I don't. For 25 years we've been visiting this hotel, https://www.lepetithotel.com/ on the water, in St Martin. Funny that the lobby isn't underwater like Hansen predicted in 1988. I bet that some people from the Salomon islands might disagree with you : http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-36255749 Build a wall around your house and you will be alright Jack! I suspect you mean the *Solomon Islands*. You do realise that whole area is highly active and that land rises, falls, new islands appear, old ones disappear etc etc? Do you think that sea level rise is confined to the Solomon Islands? If so, what is the mechanism that stops the water reaching an equilibrium all over? The oceans do slosh back & forth somewhat depending on winds etc but this isn't it. The best data we have is from satellites and they show a very slow rise over time. Guess what, there's been sea level rise since the end of the last Ice Age. I live on the edge of a drowned river valley. Bring it on, I need another metre of water out the front. FKT

I certainly care a lot. If only I got a metre of sea level rise as promised (threatened) I'd have a deep waterfront instead of a tidal one, and I could launch my boat at the bottom of my yard. As for what happens in the tropics, phffffft. It's too hot now to bother with so a couple degrees warmer isn't going to make any difference. FKT

The hole in the keel is intriguing. That's where the perspex goes for the underwater view ports. Or it's the largest, oddest shaped and stupid place for a thruster I've ever come across. The hull looks like it's been welded up from diagonal strips of steel. That's the second one I've seen like that, the other was named PEGASUS and on the hard at Margate south of Hobart. Amazing amount of welding to get a stripy hull that was sort of round bilge. I thought the weld seams should have been painted black & the boat renamed ZEBRA. It too was for sale cheap. FKT

Hah - friends of mine, he 62, she 43, adopted the 'raw vegan' lifestyle. Her decision. I just nodded. It didn't survive their first trip to the west coast of Tasmania. Not a lot of places to resupply, you see. They decided that my offer of a pressure cooker as a boat-warming present was a good choice after all. I don't hate those people making the tits & boats videos either. I think they're somewhere between vapid and highly misleading, but the tits are nice to look at, I don't take them seriously and I don't give them any money, so where's the downside? Disdain is a pretty fair comment. Quotes are a bit boogered - sorry about that. I'm too dim to figure out how to fix it. FKT

Yeah - I picked up a copy of his book last year. That was worth a read too. IIRC Annie & Pete Hill were in Stanley, Falklands on BADGER when the Rev limped in with a broken mast after an attempt to cross Drake Passage. FKT

It's gorn. I think they reposted it https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/bnc/boa/5976488642.html or this one https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/bnc/boa/5911353052.html First one has negative value. Second one, I'd give them $100 for the Sabb provided it still had its gearbox and controllable pitch prop. I always like a few spares. FKT

Dylan, I for one never thought you had anything to do with the beaches, bears etc video going away. IIRC they said that making the videos, responding to comment etc on their blog was taking too much time and starting to destroy the pleasure they got out of sailing & hiking in Alaska, so they killed their blog. I didn't realise they'd also taken down the videos which is a shame. The hunting was a really small part. What was really good was seeing Alaskan scenery I'll probably never see in person. Same reason I think the series you've made is fantastic - well worth it. If you ever think it's worth the trouble, a similar series on touring all the canals in the UK would be something else I'd watch. I know there are some, but not from a waterman's POV. Some of the canal engineering is unbelievably impressive considering the technology available to the builders. FKT

Here is one that should keep you busy for a while. Some amazing footage... https://www.youtube.com/user/wwwYachtTeleportCom/videos those two make excellent films a really well shot adventure although I seem to remember they were the couple who shot a bear - no idea why I expect it is a cultural thing a simple minded Englishman would find hard to understand D I don't recall them shooting a bear. I know they had a shotgun on board for defence in case of a close encounter with a bear. Maybe I missed that episode where they used it. Or you're thinking of the Bixler sailing videos in Alaska. He & his girlfriend shot bears for food. I've got no problems at all with that, I don't shoot for sport but I certainly would for food. If you're a vegetarian, I respect your lifestyle choice. If you're a meat eater, you're engaging in killing animals by proxy. That makes any moral criticism of hunters very hypocritical, IMO. But then, I'm an Aussie who grew up shooting animals to eat. Fortunately for the prolific wildlife (3 or 4 rabbits, a dozen wallabies and 6 grey kangaroos last night) living on my property, these days I prefer to eat meat from the local butcher's.... FKT In the UK hunting is associated with privilege, a dozen horsemen hunting 3 kilo cute red foxes with a hundred paid beaters and forty hungry hounds, which on capturing the wild and dangerous fluffball, tear it apart. Sure, in France it is the opposite, hunting is the traditional working man's weekend pastime on foot hunting deer or boar with a rifle. In Canada people seem to enjoy hunting animals that bite back, but then they have always been a bit crazy up there. Elsewhere, I have no idea. Two points. First, fox hunting as done in the UK isn't hunting by my definition. Second, there is NOTHING 'cute' about a red fox. They are one of the most destructive small predators in existence. I would shoot one on sight, the same as I would (and do) feral cats. Some fuckwit released at least 4 3/4 grown cats here recently - I'm actively trapping them (live traps for the squeamish) and I'll get all of them sooner or later. Australian small wildlife evolved in the absence of both cats and foxes. I live on an island where there are no foxes and we have a lot more small native animals & birds about the place. It cost the Australian Government a vast amount of money & time to exterminate foxes & rabbits on Macquarie Island, both species introduced by sealers in the 19th Century. Thanks for that, England. I dunno the answer to that whileI was out there the BBc wanted me to interview people who had been attacked by bears for a radio programme One bloke I spoke to had lost half his scalp and had a haircut now made popular by your president elect. Every time after that when I was riding my own horse through an english woodland I thought that the absence of bears in Britain has its upsides D Funny, I feel the same about Australia. I lived in Arizona for a while, at least the common bear there was the black bear, not the really big nasty bears they get further north. We only have poisonous snakes in great variety and they tend to leave people alone if you don't tread on them. Humans aren't food to snakes - not our snakes anyway. I had 2 big tiger snakes living outside the north end of my big workshop all one summer - they used to come out from under a couple of pallets & bask in the sun in a lovely coil of black scaly intertwined snakes. I knew they were there so there was no danger of my treading on them. They never reappeared after the following winter but there are plenty of others about the place. FKT
