Girl with patreon account goes sailing in hot place

Lynn Pardey is hanging about up at Scarborough ATM, I'm reliably informed. Perhaps the sight of her would help the healing process. At least she actually knows how to sail. FKT

Agree. What a crock. They filmed themselves talking on a mobile phone with the original builder. I skipped forward in chunks to see if things improved. Nope. Talking about stuff you might do one day while begging for donations. FKT

    E-nav on the cheap

Enjoy. Got to admit that my sailing plans extend from here to Bruny Island and back, and there's a mooring I can borrow over in Barnes Bay so I don't have to bother getting the anchor wet. I've a choice of 3 moorings out the front of my place and another in Prince of Wales Bay up town. I thoroughly enjoy playing with boats & building boat bits but long distance travel in a small one, after spending many years going places and getting paid for it, well, not so sure about that. I doubt we'll ever go very far. I really don't like hot humid climates and there's no air con on the boat. FKT

And of course, that's the problem - you should have been out on the water. Never mind, the tide will come back in. FKT

Agree. I've wanted to do a micro-scale map of my mudflats complete with current flow. One of these days when I'm bored. Already screwed with the longshore drift to build myself a beach so I can keep my dinghy there. I have a hankering for a small island (ok flyspeck islet) next. If I have good data on where to put it I might be able to screw with the wave refraction as well and eventually form a tombolo. Doubt I'll live long enough to see the end result but I can't do it the quick & dirty way nowadays. FKT

Yep and how many are logging using UT+0 as their time so you don't have to fuck with correcting for local time, daylight saving (not that a Queenslander would know about such a thing) etc? You really need lat, long, time and depth to be useful. Transducer offset from the surface should be in the setup. Did quite a lot of this on transit to/from Antarctica. We used to run a slightly different course each time to build up a bit more data. Big echosounder capable of pinging the bottom in over 5000m of water. I've seen the newer swathe mappers in action. *Nice* toys. FKT

I've always thought that crowdsourcing bathymetric data would be a good idea but given how few people have even half a clue, not sure if I'd want to rely on it. Well, not without a decent 'bugger factor' built in. Yeah I know it's being done in places. FKT

I just get mine from whatever repository has the latest stash that works with OpenCPN. There's not a lot to run into down here. FKT

Yeah. "Bugger this, where's the plasma cutter......" Someone from the marina asked me the other day if I could make a new fitting for their boat. Sure, I have a horizontal boring mill, piece of cake. CNC mill would have done nicely too. If they'd brought a camera with them and wanted to stick a post on Youtube the answer would have been different. FKT

That "camera in his face 24/7" comment is interesting. I keep thinking that, while I actually like some of the sailing vloggers, if I saw them coming I'd leave and not talk to them. The reason being, I have zero desire to have my face on their recordings. There are a number I'd offer a mooring, drink, meal and shoreside facilities to, but only if they turned the cameras off & left them aboard their boat. I suspect at least some would find that an unreasonable request. Shrug. FKT

Queenslanders can appear to be reasonably civilised, but only if you've spent a lot of time in Darwin immediately prior. FKT

So, you're bi, then? How much experience with Thai GF's do you have? Or were they 'lady boys'? NTTAWWT.... FKT

I was talking about work too. As I said, my friend teaches courses in this area and arranges placements for her students. It's hard both physically and emotionally. She spent a lot of her working life supporting people with mental and physical disabilities. And yeah we all know some men really are sleazeballs and control freaks who no woman with knowledge of what they were like would go near. There was one in Hobart sometime recently - this year, last year - who shot his Filipina (IIRC) wife for having the effrontery to leave him. I hope he rots in jail for the rest of his miserable life. Yeah - dealing with the frail aged isn't easy. Combine with dementia and in other cases significant physical & mental disabilities and it gets a lot worse. That's where my friend has worked most of her career. I'm pretty glad she's teaching and not doing a lot of hands on work now. Classic example of crap pay by choice though - 2 University degrees, the first with Honours plus a bunch of vocational diplomas etc including auditing and her pay is rubbish. She stays by choice. So my responses are a bit tongue in cheek too. Not touching the "Australian women are tired of having their empathy exploited" though. It'd be real easy to counter that Australian men are tired of having their good nature exploited. Hence marrying foreign women - for example. No personal complaints FWIW. Depends on your POV. FKT

You have a Filipina as your 2nd wife? I'll generalise without any foundation and predict that you're a lot happier than you were with the original Aussie one and you knew that dealing with/supporting the extended family was part of the package. Why say that? Observed experience with other men I know. Not personal experience. Though as I said one of my woman friends teaches a bunch of them and sometimes they all come to my place to BBQ, play with the kayaks etc. Great for me - bunch of 20-somethings for eye candy. Funny story - was at a party once and heard the Aussie female ex bemoaning the fact that her ex had taken himself a Filipina bride and was asking why he'd do such a thing. Someone unkindly told her the likely reasons, knowing her character and determination to be right even when she wasn't, not to mention punishing the person who actually was right for their effrontery. I think withholding sex featured on the list of punishments.... FKT

The point I was trying to make was - a Filipino is a male. A Filipina is a female. Ergo, Meli thinks a male from the Philippines is likely to have more empathy than an Aussie woman. Which may well be true. Doubly so for a *Filipina*. Yes, I *am* a pedantic prick when I want to be (which is nearly always.....) FKT

I dunno, the implicit assumption that Filipinos have more empathy than Aussie women may well have good grounding in reality. FKT

One of my women is training a bunch ATM. Filipinas, Brazilians and I think there's an Ecuadoran in the mix too. Previously Rwandan refugees and some Somali women. Most of these women are well qualified in other areas but their quals/skills aren't on the short-list for a resident visa so they re-train to something that is. Australian women certainly work in this area but a hell of a lot of them who were sent to training by Centrelink (or whatever the current incarnation is) in order to keep their dole payments are essentially unplaceable due to their attitude. They get failed out on lack of attendance and attitude issues - assuming they can pass a working with vulnerable people and police check. FKT

    Drug Prohibition: Still Stupid

Happens here in Australia with tobacco. Push the legal price high enough and you create an opening for the black marketers. This is strictly an observation - I don't smoke, haven't done for over 40 years and nobody I socialise with smokes either. I approve of suppressing smoking, just - push the price too high and a black market always appears. FKT

That's fucking hilarious. You're seriously equating difficulty/skill needed and consequent pay with the number of years a University degree takes? Seriously? No wonder you work in a sheltered workshop. I can and have done what you do (General Library Assistant would be my guess) but hell would freeze over before you could do what I do. As for engineering versus childcare workers - ha ha ha ha ha. You seriously think a childcare worker's training is the same as an engineer's? Well, why don't we get them to design bridges, ships and planes then? Think of the money we'd save..... FKT

All true, too. Different perspectives. My first wife is way brighter and always earned a lot more money than me. One thing we never argued about was money. We still don't 20 years later and we still own joint property. Anyway, you seem to believe the system is stacked against females. I don't. I suspect this difference in POV is as much based on earning ability than gender as most of the women I associate with are in the 5% or higher IQ & income brackets and are more than capable of looking after their own interests. I've pretty much deliberately limited my income by picking interesting things to do rather than high dollar stuff. Flip side is, I haven't had a stroke or heart attack yet. Never saw a gravestone yet that said 'I wish I'd worked longer hours'. Time to go - excavator man has arrived and we have some pristine environment to trash along with a bunch of trees to kill. The things you have to do to get a boat to the marina..... FKT
