Thanks - it was more my cynical nature that any change in what everyone acknowledged to be a very generous scheme couldn't possibly be to my advantage :-) Didn't think you were arguing - I was trying to say that I didn't at all disagree with your assessments of the schemes and the double standards WRT defined benefit/accumulation schemes. Historically it wasn't so bad - but you have to go back to the early 70's when the APS was not well paid and the super scheme was a carrot for career public servants. Some State ones were even more generous if you lasted to retirement age. Then the Whitlam years saw APS salaries go to parity (mostly) with private enterprise, yet the super scheme remained the same defined benefits one. Something really had to give. Now - IMO from inside experience most of the Executive Level employees are way overpaid. Most of the real work is done by the APS levels 4 to 6. Management-staff ratios are idiotically low; I used to have 20 people reporting to me when I was working as a project manager in private enterprise and that wasn't exceptional by any means. If you fired 1 in 2 of the EL1 & 2 ranks and employed more 5 & 6 level employees productivity would likely double and the number of useless meetings drop accordingly. I suggested that in my exit interview :-) Chance would be a fine thing. Glad I'm not there any more. I just see it from the outside now and I can charge for attending meetings if I don't think they offer any value. Been negotiating a software upgrade for 7 years with one Govt department, which had better remain nameless....... just in case it ever actually happens. FKT

You are quite correct, I'm not arguing with you about it. I was highly cynical about them ever paying off though but couldn't see any downside in preserving my membership over the years I was off doing other things & out of the APS. When they got me back from the USA I dropped quite a long way in salary but could resurrect my CSS membership from my CSIRO days. I then proceeded to make the max possible contributions :-) Pulled the pin before I turned 55 to take advantage of another anomaly. Yeah I gamed the system and I'm not at all embarrassed about it. My boss used to be really pissed off at me - he'd been suckered into transferring into the PSS from the CSS and later on worked out how much worse off he was. Every time he moaned to me about what my super was worth (costing his budget) I'd point out that nobody held a gun to his head and forced him to make a bad decision. He was quite glad when I resigned. So was I - went back to private enterprise and amazingly my salary went up again so I dumped all that cash into another super fund when the limit was - I think - $75K pa. I'm 65 in a few weeks - cash out time. Except with my lifestyle I really don't need the money so - it can sit there. FKT

Yeah I was going to mention that last, because one of my Super funds is the long-closed CSS, which was like having a decent Lotto win (no surprises they closed it to new entrants). It made up for the way under market salary I got paid over the years I worked there. Not that I cared, I was getting paid to play with big marine toys. Half of my pension goes to the surviving spouse, IIRC. Can't remember all the conditions. FKT

This isn't worth getting into, really. It's not. Women generally end up with the shitty end of the stick because they're the ones who take time out from the workforce to raise the kids. You'd have to be dropping at least $10K pa into their super fund to cover this for the years they're out of the workforce. Few men would be doing that, I venture to say. FKT

I've noticed the same thing so a lot of the time, when I see his downvote, I upvote to cancel it out. From what he said he's trying to 'improve' the place. Good luck with that. FKT

Gun lobby group condemned petition Ms Enoch's petition also separately drew the ire of a gun industry lobby group, the Shooting Industry Foundation of Australia (SIFA). SIFA condemned the petition, accusing Ms Enoch of wanting to rid the community of all guns. "It is outrageous that a small business which serves a legal, open and ethical market should be targeted by a QLD Labor MP," it said in a media release. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-0-dogballs/minister-sent-rape-threats-after-opposing-christmas-gun-ad/10403958 Got anything else a year or more old you'd like to generate some faux outrage about? May I suggest you try Twitter? FKT

Buy more boats & fill up the shed. Or sell & move. I built a 1 bedroom cottage here in Tasmania to stop visitors outstaying their welcome (actually it's 2/3 bed but one has a metal lathe in it as overflow from the machine shop and the other I've never finished wiring etc). I like the old rule - 'guests and fish stink after 3 days'. Exceptions for those who bring their own accommodation (boats on one of my spare moorings or camper vans etc - plenty of land here). FKT

How time flies when you're having fun. Yeah I knew it was a while back. Funny, I thought it only took me 3 hours Albany-Perth. I certainly wasn't driving that fast so it must be a dud memory. Been a few years. Might be over there in February if we get a contract we've been asked to quote on. FKT

    The end of women's sport.

Call me apathetic but I don't actually give a damn. Let the sports make whatever rules they like. If a significant proportion of the membership don't like those rules, they can either vote out the rule-makers or decamp and set up another competing sports body. FKT

Ummm, he *bought* his way in over the body of a sitting member. Then he white-anted everyone he could until he was Opposition Leader, blew that by trying to act like a CEO, went off and sulked about the loss until he sensed Abbott was vulnerable, white-anted him in turn and took over as PM. This *despite* the example set by the Rudd-Gillard-Rudd fiasco because Turnbull, in his arrogance, was sure he could do it better. Pity he was reduced to a 1 seat majority in the subsequent election. Then *by his own metric* he lost any claim to retain the Prime Ministership. And here we are today with a zero-seat majority. Probably an early election which the Libs will probably lose. Turnbull never learned a thing including how to temper his overweening ambition and now he's out of Parliament. Good riddance. He & Rudd can console themselves in New York forever as far as I'm concerned. FKT

Agree. I'm a pretty fair welder, got my welding pressure vessel tickets back in the day. I don't do enough aluminium to feel comfortable with anything structural though. Small areas I'd TIG weld because then I'd know I was getting proper penetration and fusion. MIG, not for me until I'd done a lot of practice and sectioned/broken a lot of coupons. An aluminium boat needing repairs shouldn't be a big deal, probably going to be cleaner than working on a steel one. At least you don't have quite the same issues with corrosion on unpainted surfaces. I personally wouldn't paint aluminium anywhere I could avoid it. You really do need a well shielded work area, preferably undercover, and stainless wire brushes etc etc that have never been used on anything else to clean the joints to be welded *meticulously*. Even small steel particle contamination gives big problems. Steel is a lot more forgiving. These days a good thick epoxy paint barrier and you're golden for a long time. I've got over 400 microns thickness on my hull, as measured by an ultrasonic thickness gauge. FKT

Ah, Maxine. I voted for her because Howard wasn't taking the hint about retirement. Then I voted against her because really, she wasn't wanted. Her spray on TV after losing was a classic. It was all about her - except it wasn't. She was just a placeholder. Phelps is likely going to be the same. WRT slagging off at men - Clive Palmer always gets a guernsey. FKT

He can and does say whatever he likes. I certainly haven't asked him to stop. That doesn't remove our right to comment and disagree with his point of view, especially when he goes out of his way to paint with such a broad brush and condemn all hunters. I like my birds too. My flock of human-acclimated native hens (they're not tame, just acclimated) have just hatched their latest clutch, this will be maybe the 8th generation I've seen grow from little brown fluffballs to adulthood outside my living room window. Last year's hop up on my deck and peer through the window. The lapwings have hatched their chicks & buggered off. I carefully don't disturb their nesting area and I don't even *like* them. Currently there's a wattle bird nesting inside my barn and last year it taught its nestlings to fly in there, shitting all over my boat deck. I don't even block up its access hole, and won't until I build a few nesting boxes for the outside. I maintain small dams with reedy fringes for nesting water birds and other creatures - frogs etc. It took about 5-6 years of trapping and shooting to get rid of all the feral cats around here. That's why there ARE so many birds now. And bandicoots, potoroos and other small marsupials including Eastern quolls. But since shooting things is so wrong, I should just watch the small wildlife get driven close to extinction rather than sully my hands with the death of an animal. Sorry, no, and I'm not the least sorry about it either. I'll shoot what I think needs to be shot and if people like Dylan don't like that, so sad too bad. FKT

Yeah that's a real consideration. You'd have to check carefully. But - ultrasonic thickness testers are cheap nowadays so it's nowhere near as hard to do as it once was when you basically had to dismantle the interior to see the inside hull plate. Aluminium isn't as easy to weld as steel is, but even so, replating sections is pretty straightforward, especially on a chine hull like a Gazelle. Thin plate areas cause *amazing* price drops too, as all the non-welders run for the hills. FKT

Biax scraper: First you find the high spots using a precision straight edge, surface plate etc then you scrape them down. Aim is to end up with a good bearing and between 10 to 40 points per square inch depending on what the machine is going to be used for. Lotta work, capable of very high precision. I'm carefully not looking at other peoples' boats ATM. Got to get mine out of the shed and into the water before summer. Then play with it until I'm bored - probably somewhere between 3 weeks and 3 months. Then start on something new. A project in Mexico or Canada would be good, the USA has become a PITA for working on steel boats from what I've read. FKT

I've gotten better at knowing when perfection is getting in the way of getting something usable. Recently been overhauling my big lathe. Re-scraped the compound slide to a few microns tolerance because it was pretty bad. Made a new adjustable gib, ground it & scraped it to fit. Milled & scraped the rotary base. Then I looked at the cross slide ways. OK I put the moving part on the granite surface plate - shit, the bottom is convex. Convex is bad because it can rock and the tool deflects in the cut. Anyway I knew the fixed ways would also be bad and I didn't feel like getting into that so - out with the Biax power scraper, knock down the convex ways until I got 70% bearing and a slight concave centre area, reassemble it all and call it done. It's definitely a half-arsed 'rebuild' but - shrug. It's a hell of a lot better than it was and I have other things to do. It's not a lathe I routinely want or need to hold better than 0.001" tolerances on, I have 2 other precision toolroom machines for that. If that motorsailer was near me I'd probably buy it because I can't see how you could go wrong if you're capable of doing the work yourself and enjoy building stuff. Agree, I'd rather start with a stripped out hull than screw about working around someone else's kludges. Depends on how good a job they've done. Most stuff I've seen advertised at 90% complete means there's only 90% of the time & money left to expend...... FKT

There *is* a beach out the front of my place but - guess what? I built it. Well, more correctly, I used my knowledge of the currents, longshore drift and tidal flats to create an obstruction that caused a change in the current speed and a consequent settling out of the sediment. So now I have a beach. On private land. Sue me. Anyway the tracked loader would get bogged (no swamp tracks) as I'd have to dig a channel at least 60m long across a mud/sand bottom. It would be far quicker & easier to set a series of charges and blast a channel. I'm probably 50 to 70 years too late to get away with that particular activity though and it's been 30+ years since I held a shotfirer's ticket anyway. FKT
