Yeah look, school kids - mostly they get a pass IMO. Not like I never did any of that sort of shit myself at that age... It's the same old story. One person or a small number is rarely a problem, just like tossing one can into the street or flushing a single turd into the anchorage isn't a problem. It's when it escalates from there that things become a problem. We're thinking of planting some extra fruit trees for the wildlife - the wallabies clean up all the windfall apples, plums etc now as do the native hens. Could plant trees along the back fence line I suppose. The locals walking by would be welcome to the fruit. FKT

I do wonder at and admire the truly selfless actions by the Auckland yacht brokers in trying to get the boat to NZ so as to maximise its sale price. No doubt, in the interest of helping the family, the brokers are also going to forego their brokerage fee. FKT

Yeah maybe. At what point does it become a PITA though? I can make the distinction just fine - wonder how many of those kids grew up thinking it was OK to cut across someone else's place without asking. FWIW we give away a shit-ton of fruit every year. Plus surplus eggs etc. GF likes growing stuff and is good at it. We keep on planting more fruit trees. But it's our decision to give it away not some random stranger's decision to take them without permission. FKT

Yeah this. We used to have 'free campers' coming and staying a day or 2 on private land outside our back gate and on a line to our access to the waterfront. One day we got a mouthful about going through their camp which was right on the walking track used by all the locals. Stupid and selfish place to camp, which is what they got told. There's always one, we let it go. A few months later I was away in the Southern Ocean and my GF hears the water pump kick on early one morning - we're on tank water from rainfall. Thinking a pipe had fractured she went out to check and found a person had driven up from the back gate and was filling all his water cans at our tank. When she told him off for it, his reply was that the water fell from the sky, it was free and he didn't plan on stopping. GF is 5'1" tall, slim, not an intimidating figure. She turned off the circuit breaker, told him the water might be free from the sky but the pump wasn't, nor was the electricity or the storage tank and to get off of the property as he was trespassing, threatened to call the cops if he didn't leave now. In return she got some abuse and threats. Problem for the campers was, they were on land owned by the local Tasmanian Land Council and we're on very good terms with them. She rang the caretaker and 30 minutes later a 4 door utility turns up with 5 big blokes in it and campers got escorted off of the place. Shortly after a locked gate got installed on the back road. Been 12 years now, no random people camping there. If they'd come to the house, knocked and asked for water, we would have said yes as we'd done in the past. The actual water wasn't the issue. Moral - it only takes one or 2 arseholes to cause a pushback. No doubt those people still think that we're the arseholes for what we did. I'm OK with that. So if you're someone who thinks that it's just fine to take a shortcut without permission through another person's place and help yourself to their fruit as you go, perhaps the person causing the fences and gates is - you. Tyranny

Went sailing Sunday & Monday, winds were going to shit Monday night so came home on the tide. At least 3 people took pix of us out there. Couple people on this forum can confirm that I've got an idiosyncratic boat and sail it. Steamer for one. The rest of you - pffft. Back to playing in the workshop for a few days and then we'll go out again. Spring in Tasmania is its usual mix of fine sunny days amongst the crap. The good part is, not a lot of boats out there. We had our chosen anchorage to ourselves. I actually did skim-read that article and it in fact had absolutely ZERO on point WRT percentage of hard Right Australians, so as per usual AJ is full of shit, and his references don't support his claims. Note that he's not willing to even give any sort of number or percentage to his claims, so people can draw their own conclusions from that. As I said I've no love nor support for the Murdoch empire, I just like a few facts scattered in amongst the bullshit. Oh and BTW Meli, I understand that your peak boating possession was a Laser or similar sized boat and you couldn't even manage that, let alone build one yourself. FKT

US elections changed by 'Australian ballot'

Australian Senate ballot paper probably from NSW or Victoria. Nothing wrong with it - if you can count past your number of fingers & thumbs. Which in your case is probably 12... FKT

Well, it is accepted academic practice to not state an assumption as a fact, so *first* you need to back up your statement that Australia (amongst others) has "large unhinged Reich-Wing populist movements". You could start with defining what you mean by 'large' in terms of either population percentage overall or voting percentage, and on what basis you classify people. But - nobody here expects you to do that. You're far better at avoiding such questions than answering them. Which no doubt is why you were a 'political science' person rather than someone with decent numeracy skills. WRT Murdoch I have no love for his business model and if his 'empire' were to be disassembled - fine with me. FKT

Examples to the contrary? Note the qualifying term 'industrial scale'. I'm well aware of what Mao did, the Khmer Rouge did and others but can you come up with any examples where it was Government *policy* to exterminate an entire so-called ethnic group in their own country? Take your time - I'm out of here for the next few days as the weather is decent(ish) and the tide is rising. FKT

    Dylan's New Boat Anarchy

A decent tablet has more screen area than my Simrad G09 plotter. I can see why Dylan wants to remove the old monster. His boat ticks all the boxes for use of a tablet IMO - secure and dry environment, out of direct sunlight that can cause them to overheat, easy supply of power without compromising waterproof enclosures etc. Those are the 3 things that caused me to buy a Simrad as I don't have a protected wheelhouse. Radar - agree the *MODERN* units are a lot smaller and use a fraction of the power but then you have to buy one. Always can be done later, meanwhile if you don't want/like it, get rid of it. Less clutter & cables. I disagree about meths but that's a personal choice thing. Least calorific content of all common fuels and here at least, most expensive. I'll stick with LPG. But 2 of my friends have kero stoves, another couple have meths, nobody has starved yet so - shrug. Whatever makes the cook happy is a good rule. FKT

In Sydney it was jet skis. Got so bad that the Premier of the time banned the things from Sydney Harbour. His only mistake IMO was not banning them south of the Qld-NSW border. Agree it's a bloody nightmare for them. Don't blame them at all for wanting to sell up & go home. FKT
  12. Yes right - so you can't. Or you know that the references are so dodgy that they'd only be accepted by political science grads and not by anyone with an ounce of critical thinking ability. Whatever. Carry on, we're off sailing tomorrow. FKT
  13. Source for that please? And list of historical cases in support? I'd accept that figure if the other 90% of the population were somewhere between apathetic and tacitly complicit, or totally cowed by violence, otherwise, not. FKT

    When President Biden Begins....

No argument ever does when you're on the losing side. Not that I think it was incorrect, just not a standard that had, AFAIK, ever been applied to a losing side in a war previously. In the case of the Nazis, seeing as nobody in the recent (last 1000 years??) past had committed slaughter of civilians on such an industrial scale, I'm quite comfortable with the punishment being equally draconian. Ever read any of HH Kirst's books? The Gunner Asch series in particular? If you don't want to go to the camps yourself there's a lot to be said about massively creative incompetence as a method of evading orders. FKT

They might have a problem with that though once the UK exits the EU completely. Assuming the boat is UK registered anyway. FKT

As I've said - some of us can learn from the experiences and recorded data from others, many have to learn by personal experience. And if they don't survive the learning experience event, the average population IQ ticks up a tad. Evolution is a bitch and keeps on working away. FKT

Salient part: "For clarity, humanitarian reasons or other compelling needs would be unlikely to include situations relating solely to financial loss, or to vessels travelling primarily for pleasure or convenience." The vessel is sound and the owners have already been able to fly to the UK and back. They can move the vessel, they simply don't want to. I can understand that under the circumstances but the reason they want to go to NZ is to be able to sell the boat more readily. IOW, purely financial decision. It's not a NZ problem regardless of tragic events. FKT

    Tyranny

Yep - you get why the simplistic 'majority rules and fuck the minorities' can and always does lead to massive injustice for the minorities. That was exactly my point - the tyranny of the majority is a thing to be feared and constrained. FKT

And so? Still a majority of qualified voters. OK another example. Post 9/11 if a majority of voters supported a vote to deport all people professing the Islamic faith, would that be OK with you guys? If not then why not, if a simple majority rules? Are you guys decrying the protection of minorities getting the point yet or should I just keep posting more questions of what could happen under a 'pure' democracy where 50.001% can override the rest?
