  1. We have lots of guns. Not much hand guns but long guns, definitely. If you want to argue with me, first you'd better define what you mean by 'few' because I don't think you actually have a clue what's out there quite legally. The import figures show that there's more long guns legally in Australia now than before the Port Arthur massacre. Different mix, but still more of them. What we don't have is the USA's utterly fucked culture where guns are used because the culture says it's ok to shoot people if they aren't the right colour or 'disrespect' you somehow.. Thank Dog in Her wisdom for that too. I can't recall the last time an Aboriginal was shot for being an Aboriginal but I'd venture it was back in the 1930's and in the Northern Territory, or possibly Western Australia. A number of cases where a white stockman would steal a woman and shoot anyone from the tribe who objected. There's a case before the courts ATM where a police officer shot & killed one in the NT. I don't know the details on that but IIRC he's up for prosecution for murder. And there was that cop on Palm Island who killed one a few years back or let him die in the cells, can't quite remember. A riot resulted from that and we didn't send in armed police to shoot anyone. But chasing one down in a suburban setting and shooting him down like a dog? Never happened in my lifetime that I know about, and I expect I would know. That sort of bullshit is purely on you guys in the USA. FKT

    So, Why?

*First*, you'd have to give me a definition of 'race'. Then we could move on to 'fairness'. I've asked on a number of occasions and I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me how a person is classified as 'black' or 'hispanic' or any other racial grouping. Give me an objective definition for how you classify a person's race and then I'll happily discuss it. When I asked why one of your politicians was supposed to be 'black' when she had a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, rather than 'Indian', I got a deafening silence. How about the differences between Koreans and Japanese even at the genetic level? I don't actually subscribe to the 'race' mindset at all. There are variations in human appearance, but we're all inter-fertile. 'Race' is a social construct and it causes more problems and divisions than it's worth IMO. I'm not at all interested in perpetuating it. Seems that 'race' basically devolves to skin colour and that has to be a fucked up way of making judgements (except that you can be light pink and still 'black' in your society). Culture & financial circumstance are more relevant IMO. FKT
  4. Basically sums up the essence of the problem. Now you *have* to make a profit and profit isn't a dirty word, but there's a huge difference in my mind between a profit made from making/selling goods/services that people want to buy and playing casino. Rent-seeking is killing many productive industries. But as you say, those with the big dollar accounts can & do buy the political influence to feather their own nests. From my cheap seat you're going to need electoral reform, political donations reform and probably some form of term limits or recall procedures to put a brake on it. Can't see it happening. I wish India could get its shit together as a counterbalance to China. They've the population to be a really big market, they've got decent pockets of high tech manufacturing. I see some of their industrial stuff on eBay, quality looks reasonable, about a par with the Chinese offerings. Not sure why they haven't done more. FKT
  5. That would be a good thing to do but first you have to deal with your parasitic 'financial services' industry which wants to make money by playing games rather than servicing productive companies. Not to mention cutting CEO's back to size and accepting that a 5%-10% long term return on funds is good. Your manufacturing is fucked because the CEO's figured out they could game the system by outsourcing everything to places like China, becoming importers and fattening their profit margins while cutting quality to the bone. That was classic short-term thinking or outright stupidly racist in that they never figured the Chinese would improve their quality and start direct selling competitive products without the benevolent overlords in the USA being part of the process. In the process you totally gave away your export markets. Your persistent refusal to adopt the metric system makes you even more of a PITA to deal with. You'd have to produce a truly outstanding product WRT quality *and* cheaper than the equivalent European offerings before I'd even bother looking at it, if it wasn't made to SI standards & dimensions. I hang out on a manufacturing forum. This shit comes up a lot. The number of small/medium USA manufacturing concerns that are still in deep denial about what's happened to the industry is a concern. I can't see you getting your shit together *WITHOUT* a major disaster forcing you to. And first you need to rein in your financial parasites. Good luck with that... FKT

Girl with patreon account goes sailing in hot place

This. He was told really early on that the origami boat hull caper did NOT scale up. He didn't listen. Nothing since has done a thing to rectify that fundamental problem. I too have zero interest in detailing the shortcomings of the build. Doug is like the 'rusty junk' guy except with better tools and work ethic. I quite admire his ability to get things done and some of his lateral thinking but I'd never, ever have anything to do with him or his projects. FKT

    Dinghy build: Two-Paw 8 nesting

Less than my Chameleon nesting dinghy that's for sure. Maybe 40 kg or a bit less. It's 2.4m long and quite beamy, very stable. Doesn't sail of course. Rows - 'ok'. I use a 2HP Honda air cooled outboard. 2 of us can lift it & load it into the back of the flat tray truck. I put cheap Chinese made pneumatic wheels on it and have no problem pulling it out of the mud & up the beach by myself - just came ashore in fact. On the boat it lives in davits. I really like the dinghy you're building, don't misunderstand. Just I'd destroy one in short order. Same reason I don't have a wooden boat or any timber on my weather decks (that isn't covered in f/g and epoxy then painted). FKT

    So, Why?

One of the best programmers I ever had working for me was a 40+ woman who'd learned on the job. I ended up getting her promoted and some years later worked for her as software designer to her project manager position. It was a better fit for both our skill sets. IT is easier, you sit on your arse and pretend to work. When the software breaks, people expect that to happen anyway. Electronics and mechanical stuff is harder. You had to have done a university level degree and have a lot of experience because out there, there was zero backup & support. Limited ship berths, everyone had to have a major skill and at least one minor one. Where possible we used to 'buddy' new people in with an experienced hand. Wasn't always possible, only when we were having enough people to staff 2 shifts. None of us had a problem with working with or for different types, we'd all had extensive experience in different countries & cultures. I actually preferred working for a female manager - generally there's less posturing & bullshit and I can't be bothered with that. I do miss my tech crew on occasions I must admit. Like today when I ran an extra pair of wires from a new PV panel on the davits to the distribution board and the route only used maybe 2.5X the amount of wire that it would have taken on anything other than a boat. Someone 30+ years younger and considerably more agile would have gotten nominated for that job. Especially crawling upside down into the lazarette with a bunch of cable ties between the teeth and sidecutters wedged somewhere creative. FKT

    So, Why?

Actually yes and I've been there. Had HR on my case about the lack of females in my team. I pointed out that pretty much none ever applied as they couldn't meet the criteria. HR suggested that the criteria were framed to exclude females. I replied that the people needed to have certain proven skills & experience because they were going on a ship, were on shift 12 hours/day and for up to 12 weeks straight, in a support role for a bunch of scientists and that the systems HAD to be kept working. I also said that we'd be happy to take interns/trainees who had the training but not the hands-on experience if HR funded them and - much more difficult - arranged for ships berths to be made available. HR replied that they weren't in the training biz. At which point I basically told them to FOAD. Eventually I did manage to recruit a couple female scientific programmers but gear techs and electronics, no. So yeah I have and would exclude a huge bunch of any demographic if I had what was IMO good grounds for doing so. We used to exclude *ALL* people with disabilities, for example. It's really difficult to retrofit a ship for wheelchair access and even harder to get one down a scramble net in an emergency. FKT

    Dinghy build: Two-Paw 8 nesting

That's why I have an aluminium dinghy. It lacks any pretence of elegance but it carries people & stores just fine, is relatively light and can be heavily abused WRT running over rocks, oyster bars et al. FKT
  11. Think I'm safe for a bit longer - I just bought 15 pontoons capable of supporting approx 600kg each. No doubt something will occur to me. The problem with arguing with conspiracy nutcases is, it devolves into attempting to prove a negative, which is logically impossible. I find it more entertaining to simply encourage them in their delusions by inventing more and more wildly unlikely scenarios and seeing how long it takes before the penny drops and they twig to the fact that I'm winding them up. And then there are people like Randum, who demonstrate that in fact there *is* no bottom one can plumb. FKT

    So, Why?

Nothing new there. I used to get my arse kicked regularly by one particularly smart young woman when I was at university. Not only was she smarter than me, she also was a lot more focused and worked harder. So I married her and we had 3 seriously bright kids. You *really* don't want to hear *her* opinion of AA. She got to where she is because she was a damn sight better than the competition, all of it. FKT
  13. Not a chance. I'll disagree just to start an entertaining argument. I've finished 3 projects recently and am getting worried that I might run out. Time to add a few more to the list. Time to head off to the boat yard and annoy a few people in RL. FKT

No I don't have to look at the LSAT. The fact that you refer me to it and therefore I assume it supports your use of that question in no way invalidates my *opinion* that that question is not one of literacy, it's one of opinion. As for real life, I'm 67 and retired. Science, engineering and IT career working in multiple countries including yours. FKT

That's not a question testing literacy. It's a question asking for an opinion. You've just demonstrated that you, personally, couldn't be trusted to devise a test. FKT

    So, Why?

Actually, that is a deadly accurate observation. I've said the same thing myself WRT Australian aborigines. That's not to say that we should stop spending money, mind. It means that what has been tried to date is an observable, objective and total FAILURE. About 20 years ago when arguing this, I projected the increase in spend for the previous 20 years against gains in life expectancy, education et al. At the rate of improvement versus spend it was going to take maybe 2X Australia's TOTAL GNP to get less than 4% of the population up to average. At that point it's bloody obvious to me that it's time to look at doing something different and that might mean spending a lot more money, but the necessary first step is to recognise failure. But far too many keep on wanting to keep throwing money down the same rat holes for the same derisory returns. Probably the only thing worse than general politics is race-based politics when it comes to evaluating outcomes. FKT

I don't have to. Been there done that. Not as a person on the chain but as a scientist/IT specialist. Was working on an R&D project involving individual animal tracking from farm to supermarket. I made sure that as project manager I got to go and see how things really were done not just what I got told was done. Couple things I hate in this world, cattle feedlots and abattoirs. FKT

Canada bans 1,500 types of assault firearms YES!

Banning 1500 variants of firearm is typical politician response and invites gaming the system. You could address the vast majority by the application of 3 rules. If it's a centrefire cartridge AND it has a removable magazine AND it's a semiauto action It's banned. Really simple to assess & apply and captures all the variants I can think of. Could be extended to pump action if manufacturers started gaming the system. Note I don't specify magazine size because a removable mag, even if the factory only provides 5 round capacity, can always be easily upsized by the accessory manufacturers. A fixed magazine rifle is a lot harder & more obvious to modify and would be immediately illegal to own/use. FKT
  25. It's a *float*. You bolt a whole pile of them together to form a floating structure. Got 30mm holes in each corner for this reason. They're widely used by the fish farms to make catwalks, work platforms etc. That's where these came from in fact. I'm thinking of something like a biggish work platform/barge. Load capacity in the 4 tonne range. Draft maybe 150mm unloaded, 400mm fully loaded. We'll see what my boredom & creativity comes up with. Got to do some calcs based on weight of structure, see how much buoyancy I have to play with. Delivery tomorrow, hopefully. FKT
