    Figaro solo

Three leading boats passing Ile de Bréhat. Taken with my phone through the 20×100mm binoculars of my grandpa's summer mansion on the Brittany coast.

VOR Leg 11 Gothenburg to The Hague

Oh yes, he certainly was having a ball! After freeloading at the VOR Sailors Terrace he went to Brunel to pay his respect to Bouwe, who basically said he does it for the sport and not for the glory. Then talked to Carlo about Grunter, his AC boss, and then was so taken aback by Nina's beautifull smile that he mixed up the rounding of Cape Horny from East to West, bummer! After a couple more Heinekens he followed the team to backstage of the pricegiving, and I encouraged him to cut Jack Sparrow's lunch by chatting up lovely Sophie. It's amazing how his dementia seems to diminish when he sees a pretty young woman, and Sophie even appeared to enjoy the conversation (somewhat...). Next up to Annemieke, the Dutch Lioness who at first seemed slightly unsettled by the SOF's approach, but then opened up nicely, also about all the interviews she had to endure. I even managed to get a picture of the old man with both Annemieke and Sophie, a picture I promised to Jugk Sparrow quite a while ago. In all seriousness, we were rather surprised by how eager all the girls seemed to be to do the race again, particularly so soon after the finish. Amidst all the uncertainty of the next race, they were keen to go again, be it with a mixed crew or an all woman crew. We sensed a slight preference for an all female crew, or perhaps with one male, dunno, but in that case grandpappy is keen to go again, to make it a triple.

You are ok Shang ? Didn't see you on the Sailors Terrace, you are a Sailor aren't you ? And I agree, this guy has had a Chinese make over, so that makes it 50%, right ?

VOR Leg 11 Gothenburg to The Hague

Wiitty & Wife joined the crowd after coming on stage, not sure for what price. He seemed a bit subdued, possibly due to lack of alcohol, unlike me, umm...

VOR Leg 11 Gothenburg to The Hague

Crews were waiting backstage for their turn, probably their last commitment. Think I recognize those legs...

Exactly, and quite a crowd and a great atmosphere at the pricegiving!

Thanks for that Leo. Caroline and Annemieke were very good and not boring like those politicians early on in the program. Here is what it looked like:

One more, Martine smiling and looking a bit lost on the foredeck and perhaps wondering what will be next. My demented Grandpa says he wants to party with all 22 girls tonight, and thinks they were only on board for entertainment. He mumbles about the Vulva Race, the poor bugger!

VOR Leg 11 Gothenburg to The Hague

My only close up shot on Sunday, when Akzo came close by our ship to say hello to the many fans on board. PS. Renny, my grandpa will be at the Sailors Terrace later this afternoon, and he says he would like to meet you. Beware, he is a bit of a character. Check PM for contact details plse.

Excuse the thread drift. Out on a navy hydrgraphic vessel, to meet our heroes. Not sure which heroes exactly yet. Cloggies are looking a bit depressed, also because ship is dry...

VOR Leg 11 Gothenburg to The Hague

We were discussing that option this afternoon over beers in sunny Amsterdam, and playing the bigger tides there could be a real advantage. TTOP and Scally now following Dong as well, and Witt&Libby are known to play the round the outside game well. Going to bed now, but not sure if I can sleep peacefully or will have a nightmare of Dong getting stuck on one of the many sandbanks. Will try to wake up every 2 hours or so, and then lecture my less fanatic mates over breakfast.

VOR Leg 11 Gothenburg to The Hague

Yes indeed, set all the waypoint in the autopilot and woke up not far from Scheveningen. And you know, nothing goes to weather like a 747 ! Will try to make up for my absence here with Live reports and gossip on the spot.

VOR Leg 11 Gothenburg to The Hague

They have a YB (yellow brick) tracker on board and you can download the app here: http://yb.tl/volvolegends2018 They don't have to do the Norwegian and Danish detour, and should be in Scheveningen before their younger sisters. There is also a Farcebook page, with pictures of all the boats: https://m.facebook.com/legendsrace2018/ Actually it's not really a Legends race as there are hardly any legends on the boats. Its more a charter fleet where people pay for the experience and to show off to their friends. Nevertheless nice to see the old Whitbread and Volvo boats, but better call it a Heritage Parade. Oh well.

VOR Leg 11 Gothenburg to The Hague

Can't believe it either, Herman. Today"s press release is still talking about a 700 nm course, and all the spectator boats are set for a Sunday arrival. Half of Holland and Friesland will be in Scheveningen on Sunday, to cheer for Bouwe and Brunel, the new Conny and Flyer they hope. On Monday they have to go back to work, so Sunday it's got to be !

    Finish VOR The Hague information

Exactly Mambo, and 5 days before the fininish the information is still rather vague. And the organizers don't reply to emails, phone calls or SMS. Rumours are that those tightwad cloggies are not gone have a Legends Bar. My grandpa is not going to like that one bit, and I am worried he will smash up the Sailors Terrace !

Bump. Whats up with this thread, wrong title? "Scheveningen Shitfight" seems more appropriate...

VOR Leg 9 Newport to Cardiff

Dunno either, what has sailing to do with all that. All I heard in Newport was that Brown Uni was for the Mafia kids, and thinking of it, those two have something Italian in them, isn't it? Full disclosure: I myself went to both MIT and then Harvard, honestly! All in one afternoon, on my bicycle, from Boston Harbor.

VOR Leg 9 Newport to Cardiff

Just wondering how many so called "Legends" will actually race in that "Legends Race" ? Or will it be just the boats crewed by whoever likes to pay to pretend to be one? Also noticed in the article: "The leg was also notable for the absence of Dutch navigator Marcel van Trieste, who on hearing news of his mother's death, had jumped overboard to be picked up by a RIB as the boat rounded Eclipse Island, near to the coast of Australia." Always thought that if you go on a RTW Race, that you do the Race, and forget about family matters, however "triest" (sad) that may be...
