What type of boat is this?

Thanks for that Gouv. I don't how us missed such a great world wide class. Female sailors are a rarity in the class . I can only remember one or two. Don't remember any bikini variations. The design and class rules make an ok competative for many more years than most similar boats. One of my favourite s. Rig and sails are the main thing

Hi Gouv Ok dinghies! Now there is a lovely boat in flat water or one and half metre seas. A real challenge to sail and can be self built. How many did you have in the US Gouv. In aus the numbers built are now in the high 700 or low 800. Unfortunately now quite expensive. Recent world's in Barbados . Sailed in most European countries NZ Aus Thialand and no doubt a few others. Another class for your build programme. Apologies for drift.

Another what's the best dingy question

On Port Phillip Bay. Sail with the men and get an ok dinghy or Finn. If you want to sail in a mixed gender fleet then Sabre or Implulse. All of the above can be found second hand cheap in Melbourne.

Another what's the best dingy question

It will come as a surprise to some that there are Sunfish in Australia. They were built under a license agreement In Geelong BY a company called Body Craft. I dont know how many were built but i have one in storage while i am out of the country.

    Huh? New Sunfish Class?

Keep up the good work Gouv. One day the experts on this thread will understand the world has changed and for every possible new entrant the reasons will vary. For those to whom cost is the defining factor will buy second hand and fix it up. For those who can buy new would buy new if they could. It appears at the moment there is no or little supply of new sunfish in the USA. We can speculate the reason for this forever but it comes down to the current builders business operations and commercial decisions. While the Sunfish class is locked into the arrangement with the one builder you have the situation you have today. Many other classes are quite successful with a variety of builders and do not have to put up with this situation that you have presently. Therefore do something about the barrier to new boats with new product made in USA or imported from a competent builder in a low cost country who can keep the price below that magical $5,000 figure that seems to be the price point you you recognise. The solution is in your own hands.

    Huh? New Sunfish Class?

Good to hear. If any one will it will be you. Very few really understand what is involved in this endeavour from a hands on perspective. PS How did my post get slightly altered???????

    Huh? New Sunfish Class?

Ok Gouv Leaving the doomsayers out of the loop, when do you think the sailing public who we see as being the unwilling participants on all this , Will be able to order an Alcort 14 and just get on with life.

    Huh? New Sunfish Class?

To Bill 4 Please refer to my previous post near the bottom of page four which i addressed to Gouv. The costs of production are hugely variable depending on location of build.

    Huh? New Sunfish Class?

I like your thinking however I wonder if extremely high volumes are warranted. The market will determine it but you would have a better feel for volume there than any one . Size complexity of factory over heads are always a problem. You can always scale up How many units per week would the market absorb in today's environment?? It's doable Gouv let's see what the cognicenti think.

    Huh? New Sunfish Class?

Thats what I wanted to hear. Do it in the USA great stuff. All you need now Gouv is a enough people to put their money down and make it happen and no doubt there are other low volume boats you could do as well. I wish you well with this. Good luck

I agree Gouv Please refer to my previous post on page four. I await your thoughtful deliberations

Hi Gouv You can have new toys maybe not a Sunfish exactly but a boat of similar dimension weight and sail area and rig type. All for modest amount expressed in Singapore dollars of around 3.300. After conversion to US dollars it is less than 3.000 US ex factory. You only have to design it someone here InAsia (not china) will build it And then you can supply the masses By the container load. C mon Gouv you know you want to.
  13. I for one forward to your informed and experienced hand s on input. I concur with the gelcoat vinyl ester comment. Properly and intelligently used perform perfectly well for small inexpensive sailboats
  14. You can have a boat of similar size weight, and rig as a sunfish. Unfortunately to get it for under the magical $5,000 figure people talk about it wont be built in USA. There are companies outside of USA {not china} who could put a quality boat for a little under $4,000 ex factory. How much under would depend on volume to spread freight costs but it is doable.
