My fantasy (why not dream?) is that in the pursuit of being the fastest course-racers on the planet they will change a lot more than foils and control systems. How about a re-incarnation of the AC72 monsters, a Gen 5 of those, or even go ocean racing by leapfrogging Macif? Since money is so obviously an endlessly deep ocean, why not aim for the Ultimate? Maybe they are thinking that high-level; I hope so.

    Teams?

If the late entries cause a big change to the Protocol on/or about the mandatory attendance at Protocol ACWS events, like to suddenly excuse teams from sailing in them, well there’s a pretty good chance that if it is applied fairly to everyone then nobody will show up.

^ cool article. from there, RK: It looks pretty similar to an airplane simulator. There’s an F50 hull up on a platform and there are big hydraulic rams that control the simulator platform. Then you have got big projectors and a massive screen – I don’t know how big the screen is but it’s not far off a full 360. The lights go out and you jump in and you go sailing. You’ve got the same controls as the F50 and it’s a pretty similar feel. There are some differences to how it feels – how your senses respond – but it’s a pretty good tool to use. YRL: What sort of things did you focus on? RK: It was hard to do race manoeuvre’s , but what we focused on was just getting comfortable with the controls and straight line sailing and the doing bear ways and getting used to doing them and straight line reaching with full [rudder] differential in.

at https://www.yachtracing.life/rome-kirby-interview-part-1/ American sailor Rome Kirby has is well known in the professional yacht racing world as an America’s Cup winner, a Volvo Ocean Race competitor and a regular on a number of top-flight grand prix raceboat campaigns. Now though he has been elevated into a leadership position as he takes on the skipper and CEO role with the United States SailGP team for the brand-new international circuit’s inaugural season next year.

Can the Italians Ever Win the Cup?

LR has very little left from whatever ‘historic’ days they had, it’s mostly all new and unproven this time. I’m betting JS will helm when the shit hits the fan for them, which could be a massive advantage.

Can the Italians Ever Win the Cup?

The biggest improvements to Team UK are 1 A basically unlimited budget 2 Grant Simmer, who has run programs with enormous success when given that freedom.

    Foils fail.

Ehman has an encyclopedia for a brain but yes, agreed with the rest of your post. The very few surviving but still-provincial outlets down there will be all about publishing the most sensationalist bullshit they can dredge up, same as their rugby coverage and their AC coverage for 10 years or more. Hot-button clickbait, aimed directky at the Clarksey’s of that culture.. Understandable and regrettable but it will be an even bigger laugh this time!

    Teams?

^ It’s not actually up to them, if a bunch of Notices were filed with perfect legitimacy. But it sounds from the AC36 people (who, GD?) like 7 of 8 are by their already-made judgement not ‘legit’ so I guess we’ll see. One of the Gtran’d articles from the Prada whatever-event (the champagne?) included quotes from P$B during an interview where he basically dashed any chance of any Protocol changes, I think it’s in La Stampa. It’s possible that he, surely like the other 2 Challengers, have little to no interest in accommodating a bunch of stragglers - there’s no reason at all for it unless it suits Prada’s commercial interests, like maybe some additional interest from in conspicuously fashion-conscious markets like Japan or China. Do you want some Dutch effort crashing into your precious foil arms by mistake during a ‘dialup’? Yikes...

    Foils fail.

The real question is what and from where that blow-hard PJM heard about it. As to the weakness and ridiculousness of NZ media in general, that’ll be made even more painfully obvious in AC36 than during the past two AC’s.
  19. Stingray~

    Foils fail.

Well the news is very new to the NZ Herald, to Farevela (the most distinct recent account of it) and new to SegelReporter and new rob the few other spots that care to publish this particular AC ‘news.’ It’s possible PJM saw the same thing I did, maybe even my post/link here, but the reason I’d like to hear his Radio Live audio is for in case he hints about his own sources. There is an Italian sailing site whose name I forget (not Saily.it or FV) that we used to quote often enough that we had an acronym for it. It may have been there, that the early genesis article about this problem got mentioned a month or two back.

    Teams?

Iirc there was also the hint of Italian connections. P$B has forever maintained the chance of a second challenge ‘from Italy’ - it’s possible this is it. TFE of all people wouldn’t have just dreamt that up without reasonably decent sourcing and then broadcasted it. He also suggested that one of the Notices filed was the USA Canfield team and said the YC was West Coast but he was not permitted to divulge which YC. He also suggested a possible Japan/China collab. SoftBank?

    Foils fail.

Am curious to hear PJM’s interview with Radio Sport or wherever it was. Anyone have that link? And if anyone wants to search my posts, I think I posted an obscure link to this story about 2 months ago; the breaking-arms saga has been going on since at least that long a time.
