    That is an accurate drawing and it's what I have to work off of. You can see why I don't want to remake the whole thing if I can help it. I don't have the old lower section, it floated away and was lost so the lower section has to be entirely rebuilt. I have good enough ideas on how to rebuild the foil itself. I'll probably make the equivalent of a crown or cap that slides over a shaved down part of the existing stump, but the materials engineering part is where I'm ignorant. I need to be able to bond it in place and make sure the bond is strong enough to not break the first time I need to right the boat... And leave the right amount of material in place to prevent tension from breaking it. Contact cement? Epoxy? Also, what to make the cap out of?

    Yes it's a plywood core, and no I don't know what they were thinking when they made it that way. The boat is a 1980s design so my hopes for getting a replacement from Beneteau are low, that said at least the brand is still around... Building a new board would be a huge pain because the top section has some very intricate shapes that it uses to interface with the socket it goes into, but I don't know how I'm going to get it to be strong enough to hold up to use
  3. Hi all, I have a Beneteau Wizz 14 foot dinghy that has a broken centerboard. The boat is likely pretty rare in the US and getting ahold of a replacement is going to be hard since there is very little information out there on this boat to start with, so I'll have to rebuild it if I ever want to get that boat back on the water. I have half the board (the important part that goes into the boat) and the full technical drawings, that show all dimensions of the board. It appears to have been built by butting up two pieces of plywood against eachother and then set them in a dense black plastic which is hard but does gives slightly. When enough force was applied to the centerboard, it snapped at the weak point. The question I have for any you that have had experience doing this: what kind of material can I use to remake the bottom that will adhere to this plastic and hopefully be strong enough? I'm already planning to use much stronger joining at the area, but composite or epoxy style material can I use to create the actual foil? I've contacted Beneteau themselves but so far no answer from them. Thanks for the help

  10. Hi all, I'm looking to crew on boats in the Puget Sound area to get as much experience as possible, anywhere from Olympia to Seattle. From dinghy Racing, to cruising, it doesn't really matter. Just bear in mind that I'm inexperienced I'd be especially interested in sailing on any kind of Farrier trimaran since I would love to buy one once I get enough experience. I have experience on J24s and I own a 14 foot Beneteau Wizz. I'm available most weekdays in the evenings and weekends.

    Cheap Dinghy storage options?

    Hi all, I'm looking for creative/cheap ideas for dinghy storage. I've searched but it's not easy to find dinghy related info online that doesn't have to do with big boats. I have a 14 ft dinghy on a dilly trailer that I currently have stored outside, over at a friend's house, which is 45 minutes in the wrong direction and $6 worth of toll away, and behind a row of cars that I have to move to get access to my boat. It's free, but it's a pain. I can't store it at my place because it'll take up all my parking, likely get stolen and be a huge hassle to park because I live on a steep hill. I'd like to store it just south of Lake Washington (seattle area) and I wouldn't mind paying if it meant it was already on my way to the lake and was hopefully around $50 a month. Does this magic place exist? What do you do for dinghy storage?

    even with a fix to within meters, they still have to be able to turn around to find him without capsizing first. it's impossible to see beyond the next wave in those conditions, maybe the other wave after that if you're at the top of the swell. I don't imagine turning the engine on helps in those conditions?

    I certainly hope the ship that is 400 miles away can find him aive, but realistically any MOB incident in heavy southern ocean conditions is a death sentence. To die while doing something we love... we should all be so lucky.

    Well... I did mean in a proper Marina when I said moorage as the OP was talking about. I do know what you're talking about! The J24 I spoke about managed to drag its mooring buoy and then broke loose in what weren't particularly high winds, and then it ended up drifting into Wollochet bay where someone fortunately picked it up before it beached itself. And I wish I'd been out today, it looks nice and brisk.

    Straight up, I'm a beginner (but enthusiastic) sailor so take my opinion as you will based on that. I live in Tacoma. The violent reputation is no longer deserved as it once was, way less so anyway. And Lakeweed is indeed still a dump. Tacoma still smells bad though if you're near the port and it's warm out. My friend that got me into sailing has a J24 moored at Fox Island and the main problem with being south of the narrows bridge, are the narrows themselves. Current thru that area is extremely strong and is more like sailing in an extremely turbulent river when it's going. So much so that the J can barely fight the current even with the engine at full throttle. For this one reason I'd say stay away from the Day Island marina. I wouldn't recommend Chambers Bay either simply because of tidal issues (it's in a small estuary) and there is a rail drawbridge you have to go under to get out. There is a lot of land effect on the winds in this area, I'd choose to moor in the widest expanse of open water possible. Winds are not normally strong around here. If I were you I'd go somewhere around commencement bay, and that's where I've watched bottlecap races happen before. Also, you can find marine conditions if you get into the Juan de Fuca straight. And the San Juan Islands, especially Sucia Island, are worth the trip up north.
