Susie is one cool girl for sure. The look of joy on her face is something that adventurers all have in common. She should be catching up to her next competitor in a week now that her Hull is clean.

Good Old Boat is a great rag. As far as old boats go, my friend Christian Williams singlehanded his 86 Ericson 32 to Hawaii and back to LA then turned around and did it again on his Ericson 38. Not all old boats are clunkers like the Westsail...lol. I like my E boat just fine too.

    The 2018 Golden Globe Race

It’s funny, a couple months ago my wife asked me why I still had my sextant onboard because the case was “taking up valuable space in the aft cabin”... This was the first year I haven’t opened my alamanac to do a site. A couple weeks ago my Garmin 740 temporarily stopped loading and I felt lost. I had to remind myself that I wasn’t. Still seemed odd not to look down at the helm and see everything from location to SOG. Kind of like sailing from the slip out and all the way back into the slip without running the engine just so that day when it doesn’t start you can (and will) get back without too much stress.

I don’t think I’d join a race to the parking lot and back Don organized. Amazing how many missed the craziness of it all. Aye 9 out 10 sailors don’t know it’s happening and half of that 1% is tuning in to see carnage like spectators at the Indy 500’s of the 1960’s.

Prayers for both sailors. It will be interesting to learn what happened to both. Like the original GGR this one may be attracting the interest of non-sailors as it becomes more like an ongoing traffic accident.

I have been enjoying the updates here more so than the GGR site. As those of you who have done open ocean racing can attest, once you do it, it changes you and you hunger for more! i saw the Crowhurst documentary and while his story was tragic, it didn’t take away from the amazing feats of RNJ and BM. The Southern Ocean will test more than the fragile windvanes they’ve deployed! This thread at least gives me the chance to live vicariously through the updates till my next venture into open water! Thanks all!

VOR Leg 11 Gothenburg to The Hague

Hard to believe it’s almost over! Being an American I was rooting for V11HR but too many bad things happened. What an epic event! The Golden Globe Race will seem like a race to watch the paint dry by comparison...lol

VOR Leg 8 Itajaí to Newport

This close to the finish and light winds! Sounds familiar. Vestas has some speed.....could be a crazy finish!

VOR Leg 8 Itajaí to Newport

Looking at the tracker it appears Vestas hasn’t had to change course in a long while. Straight and fast. Are they all fighting an opposing current?

VOR Leg 8 Itajaí to Newport

Right on Paps! Go Vestas go!
  13. Woods Rider

VOR Leg 8 Itajaí to Newport

It does shed a light on Vestas’ nightmare off Hong Kong. On another note, it’s good to see all seven boats at sea doing what they’re meant to be doing, hauling ass!
