    Looking for a new watch...

The only boat I actually own cost me $1, so I'm down to drawing a watch on my wrist with a Bic pen. It's not so bad, unless you miss your start or the RC does a recall... The reset function is a bitch.

    Tell me about the 1D35

I just spent all of this time whining and the forecast for our coastal race this weekend is a steady 15+. Hooray!

    Tell me about the 1D35

Ugh, like the lack of handholds down below... It's downright dangerous in the cabin on a hard beat.

    Tell me about the 1D35

Summer racing is almost all under 10 kts. We get some winter days in the upper teens, but it's usually not blowing that hard here unless it's storming.

    Tell me about the 1D35

I crew on one of the Houston ones (hull #8) semi-regularly (owner lives in New Mexico and flies out to race when he can). We're one of the fastest-rated boats on Galveston Bay but get beat regularly because the boat just isn't competive in the local conditions and doesn't sail to its rating well. It doesn't plane in light wind. Upwind in heavy wind, you need a ton of weight on the rail to keep it flat, unless you reef early and often. In both cases, we can't point as well as any J/Boat, new or old. Ours is semi-turbo, with a fixed sprit but the standard main. It's a wet ride, and in chop the whole boat shakes when you drop off a wave. We do coastal races on it, and once upon a time I was trying to persuade the owner to do R2AK on it... But that shaking makes me nervous. I still enjoy sailing it because it's technical, and on those rare instances where we do get to go downwind in 18+ kts it's an absolute riot. Unfortunately, our handicap ratings seem to factor the impressive broad reaching speed pretty heavily into the calculations, and we almost never see those conditions. I don't expect we're ever going to win a race on that boat. I think they were probably a huge amount of fun when you could actually race other 1D35s in one design races. And I bet it would be a hoot on a long downwind race. But it's not great in handicap racing.

    J/24 - Tillotson-Pearson vs Performance Sailcraft

Yes, rudders must still be builder-supplied. If the Worlds winner somehow snuck a carbon rudder on, there'll be torches and pitchforks.

    Single Handed roll call?

I joined this club a couple of months ago. Stock one design J/24, no provisions for singlehanding except for a tiller bungie. Only doing inshore races (because J/24) but it's been an adventure so far!

    Bottom Feeder: What To Buy?

I was going to vote for the Weta, but then I googled them and saw what older models are going for... Holy crap, they're reasonably priced! Hmmm... If I'm playing with someone else's money, the Fareast or GP26 would be my vote. If it's my money, the Alabama J/80. The MHOB J/29 will likely sell for less than they have it listed for. Buy it and keep it on Galveston Bay, and I'll bring the beer. I've raced that boat before and it's a nice ride. We could never keep up with the local FROB model, but I suspect the problem was the fleshy components and not the boat itself. The crew on the FROB had been sailing together for ages whereas we were a bunch of misfits.
  9. Meant to add earlier, one of them is now Blitz and is in Houston, TX. Uses sail #8, so presumably that's the hull number. We share a marina and I get to watch them sail past me pretty regularly in PHRF races.

Feedback - VIRTUAL REGATTA, shit rules

Rules are a little wonky. Sometimes it's better to tack "through" a starboard boat and take the penalty to capture the lift on the other tack. I was penalized pre-start when I was on starboard and a port boat rammed me. I had my view change on me randomly twice today during critical moment, and the first time my boat magically instantly tacked on top of another boat with no input from me... I was clear ahead on port, suddenly I'm teleported onto starboard right on top of his boat and I get a penalty. And I do mean, teleported. Oh, and the difference between steering down one degree and steering down 30 and hitting the mark is about a millisecond of a button press. All that said, I'm having fun! Our local J/24 fleet is going to start running private regattas (although, annoyingly, it looks like that costs real money).
  11. The first stop on the J/24 Texas Circuit was planned for Austin Yacht Club this weekend. *Was*. It has been postponed indefinitely.

Where Didja Get Your Log In Name

Spent the last two years rebuilding the entire deck and have graduated (if you can call it that) from trimmer to helmsman. Not "my" boat, but I certainly have a claim via sweat equity.

    SailGP 2020

USA can't seem to string two good tacks together... Under-tacking the boat with the ride height too low?

    SailGP 2020

Just turned on day 2 and literally the first words I hear are "alpha male". Seriously, fire this asshole.

I'd like to thank the previous owner for...

Bingo. I couldn't give a crap about what head types are used (except flat heads), so long as they're all the same (and preferably easy to source spares for- I don't know where I would find Robertson fasteners near me... Maybe Fastenal.).

I'd like to thank the previous owner for...

This. Also, for using a different random fastener size and head pattern for every single repair including, I shit you not, a flat head machine screw he/she turned into a "Philips head" using a Dremel. Just rebuilt the deck and there are now only three different size fasteners, and all screws are Philips head. I don't want the next skipper coming to murder me in my sleep.

    R2AK 2020

Anyone know if anyone has attempted to rig up a pedal drive to an existing inboard prop and transmission, say, to a sail drive system? Looking ahead to 2021 at a couple of boats that would need to have their diesel stripped out.

Does your dinghy have a name?

Bought a Force 5 this summer. Naming it Holy Hand Grenade- a) because it's bright yellow and b) because I've never raced a dinghy before. I expect to be causing havoc with it this season

    North American Mini Fleet

Does anyone have contact info for Sam Ausmus? Eko has been sitting in a yard down the street from my marina for a couple of years and I'm hoping he could be persuaded to part with it. Found him on Facebook but I don't think he ever checks messages.
