Well... we're all packed up on looking forward to a great week in the BVI's... of course now the big concern is what path will TS Tomas take. This one looks like it's going to be a monster!

Any truth to the rumor that this boat's coming to town? Also, I received a message requesting a post be deleted which included another Anarchists comments that had some reference to a bowl, a meeting, and and a silly suggestion like requiring crew lists with "approved" skippers for CHRF. Whatever...Please keep in mind if you're stopping by Sailing Anarchy don't take anything too seriously, especially offhanded comments about bowls... This is the website where the tag line reads: "Where the Status Quo Blows" - get it? And a suggestion regarding CHRF, don't take it too seriously either...It's suppose to be fun and an excuse to get some slow boats on the water. If a boat invites a skipper with some advanced skills to drive, trim or offer general coaching, don't be scared. They'll probably do better than usual, but in the big picture the crew will learn something and probably have a little more fun that day. That's the Corinthian Spirit! And the way the rating formula works, they'll move further down the list on the next race, right? Maybe if you're nice, a skilled skipper might visit your boat too and share a little knowledge! Might help. So, to those few individuals who are lobbying for additional paperwork, added rule enforcement, and limiting participation and education — I'd say it's time for you take your training wheels off, get your PHRF certificate or pick up a one-design boat, and go do some real sailboat racing... and leave CHRF to be what it is, cruising around the buoys with friends, a cold beer and a pickle dish for everyone, eventually... — thump

Well...It's been great to get Thumper back in the water and we've had a great time in our first two races - the Wilson and most recently the beautiful Sunday CHRF Fall #2 race. While the weather was great and the sailing fun on the CHRF course, I was disappointed to hear about the skipper of Sea Note calling another member un-corinthian for guest skippering a boat on the course — the issue being that the boats owner was not able to sail and the boat finished well with the guest skipper and the boats current CHRF correction time... Of course this is not a rule violation or any infringement on the spirit of the CHRF Fleet, so I find it hard to figure out why the Sea Note skipper would make such an accusation... From what I understand the skipper of Sea Note threatened a rule change to CHRF that would state that boats must be driven by the owner. If that's true, I would say the skipper of Sea Note is putting his own agenda above the true mission of CHRF which is to encourage participation and a fun afternoon of "cruiser racing". Personally, I feel the skipper of Sea Note owes an apology to the guest skipper and the others engaged in the conversation. — thump

Last week I had the opportunity to race in the CHRF fleet. It was good fun and obvious that others felt the same as reflected by the number of boats. Ironically while the CHRF fleet of Santa Barbara flourishes the PHRF fleet is withering on the vine. Perhaps there's some opportunity to change the CHRF model where boats that actively participate and perform to some level, "graduate" back to their respective PHRF fleets...? Wouldn't that make sense relative to the Southern California racing scene...and the health of the SBYC PHRF program?

Hoping to get some feedback from this motley crew for the new weather page we just launched for the Chandlery. Let me know if there's other weather links that would add additional value, or if the layout could be adjusted to make it better for checking the conditions. click here for the weather page

Tsunami Advisory Statement as of 3:31 PM PDT on September 29, 2009 ... Tsunami advisory is in effect for the immediate coastal areas of southern and central California... This is not a Tsunami Warning or Tsunami Watch. Repeat... this is not a Tsunami Warning or Tsunami Watch. However... a minor tsunami may be recorded in some areas of the coast which could produce dangerous currents and surges in harbors and bays. Coastal residents are advised to stay out of the waters... off the beach and away from harbors and marinas. Wave height and currents are amplified by irregular shoreline and are difficult to predict. Minor wave fluctuations around one foot are expected to begin at: Port San Luis Harbor... . at 8:59 PM local time Santa Barbara Harbor... . at 9:03 PM local time San Pedro Harbor... ... .. at 9:06 PM local time Santa Monica Harbor... .. At.9:11 PM local time these minor wave fluctuations could continue for several hours. The initial wave may not be the largest. Mariners in water deeper than 600 feet should not be affected by a tsunami. The tsunami advisory is a result of the 8.0 earthquake that occurred at 10:48 am PDT near the Samoa island region. Stay tuned to your local news source an NOAA Weather Radio for further developments. This product will be updated if any new details are available.

Have to say that was the most fun regatta I've had the chance to attend. Huge thanks to Tom Parker for taking the initiative to assemble such a "motley crew" as Lisa Yabsley called it. The yacht club outposts at Moonstone and Whites were killer. I think it was unanimous that we dug Moonstone the most between the two outpost. It must have been the years of having the rocky beach and smaller lot size, compared to Whites, that compelled them to pay so much attention to the details. Hopefully SBYC can assemble an outpost to rival on Santa Cruz in our lifetimes! Next year I see Grand Times and the new Med tender on the scene too. Hey, where's Paul anyway..?!
