    Who has had the test?

jerseyguy, that's really not right, you should be right up at the front of the que. Got my first jab today. Very organized in a large hall with perhaps 40 vaccinators - mine was a firefighter. Mostly old folk there as it is available here for 75+ and 65+ with comorbidities. We got the Moderna/NIH vaccine, which is particularly effective with first dose. Everyone seemed very happy to be there. They had a section with spaced out chairs for us to wait to check for any reactions for at least 15 minutes. Guy next to me was feeling hot and sweating a bit so they kept a close eye on him. About ten people doing the observing with epipens at the ready. Arm is a little sore, but it is also the arm I recently had rotator cuff surgery and I had PT this morning so a bit of both causing the discomfort. I chose that one because I need a good shoulder to sleep on! So happy to have the vaccine, by the end of the month I will be mostly immune and even if infected before second jab I would only have a mild case. Since I have advocated for deferring the second jab for three months so we can get the first dose into more people, I asked the director of our local Public Health department who was there if waiting that long would cause a problem with getting the second shot and she assured me not.

    Who has had the test?

Had a bit of a scare last week when daughter caught a cold, so all three of us tested for the third time and negative yet again. Our contribution to reducing the county positivity rate. Wife and I are getting the first dose of vaccine today!

    The American Experiment

You are one of the best trolls I have ever come across, every single one of your statements is completely wrong, but to those who don't know better have a flavor of plausibility, and so you persist in your idiotic comments. Just for fun, let me respond to one of them. "The danger in narrowing the primer and increasing the cycles for the PCR to identify specific variants is you reduce the chances of picking up an as yet unidentified variant." This comment shows how clueless you are. First, there is no "narrowing the primer". Most PCR tests for this coronavirus employ multiple sets of primers (two oligonucleotides designed to be a few hundred bp apart and facing each other, typically about 20 bases long). The idea here is to do what the UK accidentally discovered with their three PCR primer sets, which is that one of the primers of one of the three pairs just happens to overlap the 6 base deletion in the spike protein gene that is one of the many mutations in the UK strain. This fortuitous observation allowed UK researchers to perform a retrospective study of thousands of people whose PCR tests had only amplified the other two amplicons and hence can be inferred to have had the new variant. It is comparisons of these thousands with thousands with the original strain that was the first hard evidence for the more rapid spread of the new variant, now widely validated in its actual spread through the UK, parts of Europe, and soon the US. Second, there is no need to "increase the cycles for the PCR to identify specific variants". The PCR cycles would be the same as is done now, the observation would be failure of one of the amplicons to show up. Third, PCR tests cannot find new variants, only genomic sequencing can do that and it has to be continued at high levels, which only the UK has achieved, around the world. PCR tests can only detect variants already identified by sequencing and which we want to monitor the spread more closely. Crawl back into the Sydney mud, but finish your important work solving AM's Patriot problem first, please.

    The UK Variant

Wow, nicely done Kate, you must either live on this thread permanently, or you are stalking me. Comment within ten minutes of my post, first time I've been here in a while. Why don't you crawl back into the backwaters of Sydney? OOPs, forgot you have an important role in figuring out what happened to AM's Patriot, carry on good man.

    The UK Variant

US now estimating UK variant will be dominant by March. Beyond me why we have not changed our PCR primers to easily detect its presence through regular testing instead of via sequencing.

Yup, there were videos of him in the Atlantic showing holes in it as waves came over the boat, and now all you see is the remnants.

If Burton pulls this off he will really deserve it, having taken all sorts of risks in the SO, fallen back, and now clawed his way back to the lead.

Way back someone noted the band of high pressure extending west from the Canaries, but forecast now suggests bridges across.

1/20/2021 The beginning of Civil War?

Today was supposed to see massive Trump crowds etc. Nothing so far. Will be the same for Wednesday. These idiots might be stupid and gullible, but even they can see what is happening to their buddies who stormed the capitol and they are chickening out.

You guys are paranoid. These unhinged Trump supporters will be nowhere to be seen. All too chicken to try anything now.

    Assholes behaving badly

So Aurora Health Center in Milwaukee reported a couple days ago that an employee "inadvertently" let 500 doses of the Moderna vaccine out to thaw and hence had to be thrown out. Now they figured out the employee did it intentionally. WTF! What kind of twisted idiot would do something like that?
  14. Pence, Graham, McConnell, Chiao, and many others in the administration are jumping the off sinking Trump ship like the rats that they are. Let us never forget that they facilitated him for four years, and never forgive them. They all deserve to drown.

    The American Experiment

Sadly, the introduction of a 72-hour-old covid test for passengers entering the US will have little to no effect. And they are apparently not even requiring that it be a PCR test, allowing antigen tests that are full of false negatives. The UK variant is clearly widespread in the US (and could easily be detected by a modified PCR test but there seems no interest in doing that, instead of the genomic sequencing currently being done to monitor it), so it is closing the door after the horse has bolted. And the South African and Brazilian variants are surely here too. And more variants will arise locally and elsewhere and be carried around the world just like the original strain. The only possible approach is to vaccinate as fast as possible, and stop giving the second dose for now, leaving that for three months down the road, as pioneered by the UK.
  16. Time for the MyPillow CEO to take a dive. CNN reports he met with Trump today with notes that include discussion of "martial law". Why are innumerable TV channels still carrying his miserable adverts?

    The UK Variant

"the day of reckoning??" Are you one of the idiots at the Capitol Jan 6. Absolute bullshit bozo.
  20. Apparently, the millions of doses they were holding back for second doses and that Biden said he would release January 20 and now the current administration has decided therefore to release now, does not exist! Maybe they were just a bookmark for future production? I'm finally scheduled for my first dose next week, hooray, and will try to delay a second dose if the above is true as I believe the UK is doing it right and waiting 3 months for the second dose is safe and effective. Far more important to give as many people as possible the first dose, which not only provides excellent protection, but essentially prevents severe disease even if you get infected.
