      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

  1. I just walked in the door from a 10 day trip and have been very careful to avoid any news about the AC. Torrents are running now. Rudder if you ever make it to North Carolina, dinner's on me.
  2. Just saw Four Brothers. Worst. Movie. Ever. Just say no.
  3. So the hackers have limited to no access to the funds they extort. There's really no reason to do this at all. Sociopaths.
  4. Rudder, this is fucking fantastic. I can't imagine that the jackwagons at americascup.com would be thrilled to learn you're doing it.
  5. Today's event isn't showing up on the NBCSports app schedule. This was originally a lay day, so those of us depending on the app may be out of luck.
  6. My receptionist was cleaning out her email trash bin and encountered a UPS email she did not remember. She opened it, clicked on the invoice attachment and installed Locky.Osiris on the main PC in the office. The data on the machine are now encrypted and I'm supposed to log onto Tor and transfer 4 bitcoin to those cocksuckers so they will decrypt my data. That's over $10,000. Nope. Not gonna happen. I wouldn't send those cybercriminalmotherfuckers the sweat off my ballsack. We've got data backups so nothing is lost except for the last 4 hours of Friday afternoon and we can reconstruct that from paper. I trashed the physical drive and started over with a new windows install on a new drive. It will take about an hour in the morning to reinstall the data and network the pc. It's just a pain in the ass. I'd love to put my hands on the assholes that did this.
  7. Rudder, awesome! Seeding all three.
  8. I met him 20 years ago. Sperry Shoes brought him here to Wilmington to promote a new boat shoe they had produced. He was sitting behind a table with a big stack of shoe boxes and re/white/blue decorations, and there was nobody else there. There wasn't a line to meet him, just DC sitting by himself at a table. We chatted for almost an hour. He was self-deprecating about the situation. He signed a copy of one of his books for a friend of mine. It was an enjoyable hour.
  9. I downloaded the app and it blows goats. It crashes every time I launch it. I uninstalled and reinstalled. Same shit. Looks like it will be NBC or nothing for me.
  10. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
  11. Favorite music is like favorite beer, or favorite ice cream. It can change with your mood and time. This is a cool one:
  12. I don't know about trifocals or online. I've got a weird astigmatism and my last prescription was for bifocals and I took the prescription to the optician recommended by my opthodoc. $475 later I had some glasses with a line I had to focus over and under. I went to Walmart with a copy of the prescription for some glasses I could wear on the boat and for woodworking in the garage. $125 with no bifocal line and I now wear them all of the time. Yeah, I know. Walmart glasses. This set has been so good I'm not going anywhere else.
  13. Not dead but in the hospital" http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-charles-manson-hospitalized-20170103-story.html
  14. My uncle liked to tell the story of being on a DC-8 in terrible weather. The flight attendant came back and announced that the pilot would like to pay his respects to any ex-military pilots on board in the cockpit. He had flown the SBD Dauntless in the Pacific, but hadn't been near a cockpit since he had taken his wings off over twenty years earlier. He said the plane was pitching around in the weather pretty badly and was unsure if he needed to be talking to the pilots at that particular moment in time. When he got to the cockpit, the copilot explained that the pilot was dead of a probable heart attack and he would need some help landing the plane in the weather. My Uncle told the guy he had only flown prop planes in the war and nothing at all for 20 years. He and the Flight Engineer had to unstrap and move the dead body out of the left seat. Uncle Jimmie sat in the right seat with the landing procedures and they practiced landing over and over all the way to final approach. They landed in the bad weather without incident. He told me he was as nervous as he was for his first carrier landing. I asked him several times what he would have done had he been called on to land the plane. He told me that he would have done his best, but that the big jet was too complicated for him to fly untrained and he doubted he could have landed it safely.
