      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

  1. How dare they :-) Queue the ranting phone call to the RC from a PHRF chairman. RC got the RANT.... we will see how it all works out!
  2. get here as early as possible! and stay late! ;-) last week it was REALLY busy once that event kicked off.
  3. As of now participation looks REALLY low for frostbiting again this sunday. If you are planning to come, please PM me as soon as possible. We may be cancelling again this week if there arent enough sailors!
  4. I am not sure there is any answer to the phrf/sportboat issue (if there is, i certainly don't have it!) I have been on some of the said sport boats, and i grew up on a boat that at the time (80's/90's) was a pretty hot boat for its day. Lots of people on here are making solid points. but I think it comes down to club member interest. I know that a few times in the year Edgewater does Pursuit races that actually REALLY give the sport boats a challenge. I know j22's and ensigns have won them, and it really gets people out there from the club. some of the boats that race less, or are jammers get the family together and come down for the race. We start and finish them right off the shore, which gives it somewhat of a spectator appeal. Now, personally I wouldn't want to do pursuit 8-10 mile races all the time, but its nice to see and hear the excitement that buzzes around the club before and after them.
  5. There usually is.... Talk to some of the local highlanders, if you have 3-4 boats you can have a start.
  6. Lets move on... Mills Race, Cleveland Race week... here before we know it! Who is doing what?
  7. Rob, i wonder if you made it on survey monkey if you'd get more responses?
  8. They powers that be will open up a small section of the shoreway between W49th and Edgewater Park exit to allow some traffic flow. Anyone headed to EYC or points north of Rt 2 (coming from east OR west) will need to head to W49th from Detroit Ave. Then cops will open up a lane to allow 1 way traffic into and out of edgewater park exit. Its gonna be a BIG pain in the ass.
  9. A couple of us are free Saturday to rig. Time? Also, can we use a membership number from CYC for the damage deposit or just credit card/check/cash? Looking beautiful for Sunday...7-9 kts SSW, sunny and 50 degrees. I believe you should have gotten an updated email today. Other clubs member #s are not accepted for the damage deposit, sorry. Check/cash only. I believe you're welcome to use your CYC # in the bar after racing though? :-)
  10. Hey All. I know some of you have already recieved the email, some have been waiting to hear the cold weather sailing news. Frostbiting will be on this year! Here is a copy of the email i sent out to my list. I do not check SA often, so if you want the info you need to message me or contact me with your email address, otherwise you'll be left outta the loop. Side note. I welcome newbies, but prefer some sailing experience. Dinghy experienced not required, but please realize that these boats are small and tippy. We will go over capsize procedures on Day 1 and see if anyone wants to demonstrate! Alright, now that you all got sufficiently cold and wet during the Final Gun, we can start talking about Frostbiting!! > > We WILL be frostbiting yet again this year. It still amazes me how big it has become. I will send out registration forms soon so you can have them ready as soon as I get a chance to update them. Here is what you need to know! > Frostbiting will begin on Sunday Oct 21st. Show up at 9:30 (this may get bumped earlier, unless we can rig boats on the 20th- so hint hint, who wants to rig up some boats on the 20th?) at EWYC. > > Every participant does not need to be a club member, but WILL need to fill out the necessary registration and waiver. If you're interested in just helping with RC, please let me know! > > Everyone will be asked for a member # or a damage deposit of $100 to be turned in before you sail the first time. This is held on file for the season. > > NEW THIS YEAR: we are asking for a mandatory $20 registration fee. This will go towards powerboat gas, and any money at the end that is leftover will go towards the boat mainatence. (ie bungee, line, plugs, pins and rings) > > ALSO: make sure you and whoever you are sailing with are dressed appropriately. Judging by the weather lately, I am not sure we will have many of our 70+ degree weather on sunday mornings. I will send out our weather policy to everyone prior to the 21st. > > Any questions let me know- i know this was a brief email, but figured i had to get something out to the masses! > > CC
  11. Definitely. CYC members accepted? sent you a PM. e-mail me.
  12. Lee sackett (driving kerrs boat) was hit during the 1st start today (i think 1st start)- through hull damage- port starboard issue, they were on starboard. They had to go in, but were able to patch it and head back out for the 3rd race. Granted redress for the protest.
  13. Great work by the committee, RC and volunteers. Solid event. +1 does any one know who was taking the pictures and where they will be posted? http://clevelandsails.com/Gallery/tabid/107/Default.aspx
  14. Mister Ed will be making his first appearance at the Bay. WOOO WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! first??? really??
