      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

  1. been aboard. Very cool.
  2. Oh, wow! This is Anarchy, I forgot. Been here 10 years but still need a little help on what this place is, and isn't. Used to be we were all ready to help out a fellow sailor. Funny, if a guy had a $500K yacht in trouble people here used to mobilize an F'ing Navy to help him out. But asking for a small donation to go adventure racing is akin to getting a handout. Who needs it more, the millionaire who wants to avoid Seatow? Or the cat sailor looking to race again? Or the Olympic campaigner? Maybe people wanted a ride on that $500K yacht and don't give a shit about a beach cat. Always trying to move up. Skol, no issues. Actually I agree with you, I dislike gofundmyvacation type pages. However, Watertribe is mostly people over 50. Very few under 30. I'm 42 and young in the group. If you looked at the "rosters" page you would know this. Your assumption of "millennials" is way off. Besides, if you can't help out a friend with a little $, what kind of friend are you? But people here are mean just to be mean. I used to dig it. Enjoyed it. Had some fun. Hell DL and I went toe to toe for years. I almost got booted for it. Then I started getting out more, to regattas and stuff. You know, I went sailing more. After years in a retail job far from sailing I moved and got back into the game. I found out most of the people I was sailing against were not on SA and, gasp! They weren't fans. No, I am not letting the door hit me on the way out. Clean can kick me out if that works for him. Otherwise I'll stick around. Oh I know it ain't nicey, nicey around here. People around here type like they will never meet face to face. That's a shame.
  3. Yes, you are right. I need a help with a lot more. But the boat is the thing where I can provide the return. You put some money into it, you see it sailing, you feel great. I can't ask money for my personal problems. It is unethical in my opinion. And I just don't want to escape anymore. Escapism took me across half of the globe already.. So I just stick in here. And becides the proa I live aboard of my 28 ft cruiser. Escaping is easy.. but there are times when one needs to dig his toe in, right? I've lived that. I am living the half way 'round the globe part, too. Beautiful beaches make for a special kind of poverty, don't they. Dude, burning the midnight oil? Thought you didn't care. What time is it where you are? About 1 I think. Have a drink, get some rest. Skol, you're a good guy!
  4. We have a Sidewinder for sale at our sailing center. Rigged it the other day. God, that is a heavy mast! So ridiculous! This one is pretty mint to. garage kept. Hull isn't even scratched. The boat in your picture? Looks like a great EC boat to me.
  5. CrazyR, just stop responding. Skol has made a classic internet mistake. He has assumes he knows you. Now, all his talk is based on that assumption. It is also based on this new notion, that people asking for help are lazy and deserve ridicule. The more, the better. It will help them. Utter nonsense. No one seems to care anymore. I have my reservations about the combination of gofundme and Watertribe but that is sort of besides the point. We know each other, we do WT events, we know what that means.
  6. is that a ten dollar word for nasal whining? or punching yourself in the nose 'til it all comes to an end? I'm curious. Do you speak like an inbred knuckle-dragger naturally, or did you have to work up to it? To be perfectly honest, it cost me a good chunk in interest on student loans to learn the $10 words. It doesn't work anymore. I wouldn't pan handle otherwise. 3 years of 80 hours/week, the boat is gothering dust in friend's garage. @Zerothehero - sorry, pal, but I don't see the appeal to community here. How can anybody be serious about supporting this guy to complete an experimental one-off boat for an amateur race if he refuses to work, even part-time? What's the story here? Is it incomplete or is it gathering dust? What's the 10k for? Party supplies? Room and board? He just doesn't say how the money's going to be used. Bring this appeal to a bank and see what happens. Either: 1) He wants us to bleed some sympathy into his bank account so he doesn't have to deal with his problems -or- 2) he's a grifter, of which there are no shortage to be found crawling around whatever port-of-call you care to visit after the sun goes down. If calling him out on that makes me a self-centered dick, then so be it. I'm working on a Saturday and sweating a client invoice. I'm outta fucks to give. I've met him.. Wrong on both accounts. So if you fall down on the street in front of me should I offer a hand? Or kick you twice in the nuts and laugh? Outa fucks yet still posting.
  7. Have you donated? Didn't think so. Go donate, then come back and be pretentious. yeah. $50 bucks. You don't know me.
  8. Now I know why I rarely, if ever, come here anymore. What a bunch of self centered assholes. This used to be a place where people tried to build community. Don't want to donate? Fine. But most of the hate here is from people who seem to be needing some sort of affirmation for their opinion. You aren't right, you aren't wrong. You're just looking to be a anonymous jerk on a sailing forum.
  9. Skol, are you a ray a fucking sunshine. Someone piss in your cornflakes?
  10. Having met CrazyR I would not call him entitled by a long shot. While I am not a huge fan of the whole gofund me phenomenon, you never know where people have been till you walk a mile in their shoes.
  11. honestly at times we had three waves over the hull at a time. Way over the hull too. These boats go through chop, not over. I wasn't expecting the hull to stay dry. In fact I would have been shocked if it had been. We stopped for routine draining. The hatch design is good but not "12 inches under water every 8 seconds at 6 knots" good. Then again, how would your hatch handle that?
  12. Tom we are looking at 5-8 inches of snow tomorrow, come on up! I all seriousness though there was a slight hostility/ aggressive nature to some of the comments they made to each other, not to us. About us, but not to us. Whatever, it was time to go
  13. These guys were actually okay, at first. They moved their bass boat a little to make room. Once we were ashore though they changed their tune a bit. They definitely thought we were city folk who underestimated the country experience we were having. They started to mock us a bit and one guy was starting to make comments about my wife that were not friendly at all. We were outnumbered and a long way from anywhere. When Blackbeard showed up it was a very good time to go. We weren't 100% ready to go yet but it was time. We peddled about 1/2 a mile away and then finished getting on night stuff. I kept looking back afraid they might follow us. Thankfully I think the beer and mosquitos probably drove them into their tents soon after we left. It was a "peddle faster! I hear banjos" feeling.
  14. Mistermoon's list is correct. 4 challenges in 4 different boats. The Nomad was great, might take it again in '18 with my son. Very dry, very comfy. Quick enough. But it can't do the Wilderness Waterway. Honestly I just really like sailing so I guess any class 4 or 5 boat would be preferred. The TI is an interesting boat, sort of a Swiss Army Knife of sailboats. Coming from a sailor though, they don't sail really well.
  15. not sure why that went twice. We put in a down payment about 2 months ago.
