      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

  1. Only one of those three ways is at a mark. The other two are at a line (which of course may have one or more marks, but it could be a transit or other line), or at a gate. Since the discussion in this thread is about marks, not lines or gates, and since my statement limits the requirement to marks ("...can only shorten at a mark that _IS_ a rounding mark") there is nothing in my statement that is inconsistent with the rules. If an RC wants to shorten at a mark (not a gate, and not a line), then it must be a rounding mark.
  2. RC can only shorten at a mark that IS a rounding mark...
  3. Are you sure it was Clean that you met? On the two occasions I have met him, he complained relentlessly about not being treated as enough of a princess at ASW, and not doing well in a regatta when the boat he was on sailed badly. Hmmm.
  4. I have, in 32 years of sailing offshore, 22 years of buying my own charts, seven years of subscribing to a big chunk of ENC charts, and having worked for some time as a consultant to the Royal Dutch Navy Hydrographic Department (a significant provider of ENC charts) never, ever, ever seen a depth in Decimetres (nor of course your mis-spelling 'decimeters', which is solely American). There are precisely three systems for providing depths: feet, fathoms with feet as a fractional part (largely defunct), and metres with fractions of metres. For consistencies sake, all systems that use fractional measurement do so by the use of a subscript for the fractional part. On the chart in question, the '107' is clearly all in plain script (no subscript part), and therefore no part is fractional. Christ on a bike, the number of uninformed and speculative posts on this thread is phenomenal, and the worrying thing is that several at least claim to have professional qualifications!
