Could a "break away" authority work in Australia? If we look at motor racing, plenty of people were and still are fed up with the cost of membership vs value for money from the national administrator - CAMS. A breakaway administrator was formed some years ago - AASA who provides the same services as afforded by CAMS but at half the cost. Unfortunately you can't compete at the big name events with your AASA license but you can still be a weekend hack like me and complete a full years worth of racing at your local tracks = kind of like the way sailing works for many of us? Unless you want to do the big events which are run under the current administration, you could sail at your local club who may be affiliated with this new administrator who would ideally be setup to provide a mutually beneficial relationship between clubs and sailors of all levels? Thoughts?

    Bow pole fittings

Thanks Stealth. Ideally what i am looking for is a spherical bearing type of arrangement made from Acetal or similar which would facilitate rotation of the pole through the bow all whilst having a nice tight tolerance to reduce water ingress. Could go the old boot style and oval shaped bow hole but thought the world may have moved on since those days :-)

    Bow pole fittings

Thanks Marcus! We have one race that we do each year which involves sailing in narrow/draft restricted channels and typically it's a downwind race. Here's an image from last year where we attempted a little goose winging of the chute....

Thanks Marcus. I should have prefaced that the Skippi 650 is not really a sports boat....she’s more your trailer sailor. Agree on a modern day lightweight sorts boat, no need for pole cant.

    Bow pole fittings

Hi all, hoping the worldly expertise of the SA sports boat fraternity may be able to assist me. i own a Skippi 650 Cruiser. It currently has a retractable bow pole that exists through the bow just under the sheer. I’m wanting to make this an articulating pole via an under deck mounted radial track/car and some kind of fitting in the bow. Does anyone have any modern day solutions to a through the bow fitting to enable a canting pole? Thanks all, Roon

Cheers for posting Bill. As a recipient of this email with letter attached, I found the tone factual and succinct. It's definitely made for healthy inter member discussions! Lake Cootharaba was looking good for an increase in membership this year but I'm led to believe a resolution isn't too far away......

Cheers Lydia, good to know. The wording is in my opinion a little ambiguous....but as you well know, best not to make your own assumptions on policy wording :-)

Hi Rum! I'm with Nautilus....I've just tried to copy the wording but it won't let me?? The wording reads; ".....while competing in sailboat races as defined by the ISAF rules..."

I have long questioned what value for money I receive for my subs. If by paying this money it means I can enter my sailboat in yacht races then unfortunately I have to pay it. I live in hope that one day the right person will helm AS and provide members with more accountability, less expenditure on the Olympic gravy train and generally show a real interest in promoting and supporting the sport of sailing at all levels.

Cheers mate! The issue in question has been dragging on for some years....The letter from Ben has been a great tool for bringing this issue to resolve and for enlightening many sailing members of the club about the situation with AS. I'm dirty because I thought I was affiliated through my membership fees....it appears this hasn't been the case! It also has implications on my vessel insurance with respect to racing. She's a good club the NYRC....drop in on a Wednesday and come for a sail!
