    J/111 Goes Sailing...

I'd rather a powered up boat and reef in 20 than a shit can that can't move in sub 10kn. Just sayin.

I always thought those cockpits were rad. Anyone know how many were built with it? Only a few, right?

That's kinda what I was thinkin with the taller frac rig on a 35 in my post above.

I always thought a taller frac carbon rig (no checks) and only running non overlapping head sails would be cool for short handing. I really love the 35's but it seems you could do some work to em to make em easier to single hand. Is that dumb? I donno. I'd just hate to be single handing and having to do a heavy 1 to 3 peal at 230 in the morning in weather.

I was thinking it'd be cool to have the late J35/J33 cockpit. I've always thought I'd want that if I went with a J35 of my own.

The guy that owned the C&C99 Bzing bought her and is doing a pretty major refit.. or so I've been told.. I think you'd be hard pressed to find any 35's that weren't rode hard for a few years. They all show battle scars by now.. Well, I replaced some of the main sheet hardware almost 10 years ago now and when I pulled the old stuff out lots o punky ply came out with it. You'll find giant backing plates under the secondary winches too. Kind of bandaids on cancer. I loved the old girl though! When I herd she got sold to Nappy, I texted some old crew mates from her about it. I got several replies saying that the new owner would be surprized to hear how many chicks were banged on her. Kind of a floating bordello in her day. I've seen the cockpit completely filled Labatt Blues/Miller High Lifes, Mout Gay bottles, or completely filled with empties. Only to have a very hung over crew kick a chick off the boat and clean it up lickity fuckin tick before the owner shows up. She provided very amaving times for almost 25 years on Lake Champlain. He sent me some pics of the refit.. he's yanked out the whole interior and is starting over. pulled out about 200 lbs of soggy core so far. a lot of it out of the transom.. he's got muller doing the heavy stuff and some of it himself. should turn out to be a pretty sound boat. I'll probably give him a couple old sails to get started with. Bump--your J/35 started life as Kaleidoscope -before it was Split-Decision. Kerry Klingler (UK/Halsey) and his dad raced her out of City Island. We raced against her on Runaway, which is still on the hard at Consolidated Yachts in City Island. I wanted to buy Runaway for years and get the Hustler crew back on the J/35--but the owner is still cruising her occaisionally with his kids and is content to let her rot away--such a shame. the 1998 BIRW was awsome--28 boats on the starting line--it was the 1 design place to be! Pit, you ever race against Mohawk Warrior? Owned by Doc Gorman? Blue boat.... absolutely--great bunch of guys--one of the crew was an actual member of the Mohawk Nation--they sailed the boat down the Hudson from Lake Champlain --and showed up on LIS---good sailors--even better partiers!! Doc was one of the best guys I ever sailed for! I've got some great stories bout him, sailing, partying, and general obgyn humor. He is sorely missed by many. whatever happened to that Mohawk kid who sailed with him--he was a riot? Phil or Marc?

There should be at least on or maybe two kites that only have a few seasons too. I'm really glad she went to a good home! Any chance you could hook me up with any of those pics? I'd love to see the work!

They all show battle scars by now.. Hey Bump.... Those battle scars will buff out in most cases. If there is major structural damage, even that is usually repairable. When I look at the cost of a used J/35 and double it to take into account the re-fit, it's still a whole lot of boat for the dollars spent. Another thought.... are there J/35s out there in the Del/Mar/Va area that are not taking part in the racing scene or the One Design scene. There are at least 3 here on the Great Lakes that are fast Cruisers or who just race double-handed and some PHRF. As a One Deisgn racer and supporter of that part of the class, I need to remind myself that there is still room for lots of fun and enjoyment of the J35 for the occasional racer or the cruiser. If there are.... how are they participating in the sport of sailing? I have done some shorthanded sailing in TIME MACHINE and it's always a hoot. One night we got the boat balanced out and lashed the tiller. She stayed within 2 degrees of TWA for 6 hours! It was magical! I was trying to get my brother and another old crew from Obsession to buy her just for a fast day boat. I guess weddings and med school were more important than a boat...... We have daysailed ours on a number of occasions. Main and a #2 or 3 depending on the breeze is all you need. The previous owner added an ac unit, as the boat was 'retired' for a while and as he loved the boat and wanted to keep her, he tried to 'soften' it up so mother would approve. We even have a bimini and additional mainsheet track on the bridgedeck for this set-up (those bimini mounts get you every now and then, yooowww). An old dacron main had a slice cut out of the foot and slugs added to work with the bimini. Eventually he did go with a more cruiser friendly model and sold the boat. Fortunately the ac is located low and near the keel, so it does not hurt the performance. It really is nice to kick-on dockside after coming-in from a race on a hot day (order of docking: lines, shore power, ac on) and wanting to bench race over a few cold ones before heading up to the clubhouse. Keeps the boat nice and dry too. Word. My brother and I use to short hand the 35 a ton. One time we had a several hour run under full main and .75AP at 10-12kn of boatspeed. Went through several cases of beer that way...... Word to the AC too! Raced on an Andrews38 in Annapolis that had AC. Def kept the boat dry.

Obsession was one of the old boats. Around 83 or 84. I sailed for the original owner that had it till last year, when it was sold to the Ches Bay. A friend of mine sent me a pic of it sitting at Mullers in Nappy a few weeks ago. Any of you Ches Bay guys know what's going on with it? She was a ridden hard old girl for sure. I'd think she'd need a ton of work to get her a fighting chance in OD stuff.

But does he buy sails? He doesn't have to--he wills them into existence I'm in awe, truly. Sometimes I wonder what thread this is all about. C'mon you all can do better than Chuck Norris. Does anyone know if he evens sails? I think he sails with RandNJ Come on guys lets get this thread up to a 1000, I am getting nervous the Clean thread from KW is catching up If it makes you feel better, I don't think I've even graced the KW thread with the almighty Pytlak presence.
