Yep, the market has spoken and the word is “condomarans”... 95% of time at anchor — no brainer really Catana is indeed small — just 10% of Beneteau, even if the growth is realized... Annual revenues in €m:

Yes, from this logic Gunboats should be selling well. Probably the thinking behind Outremer buying the brand. And yet their resales seem, errr, difficult. Maybe they are sold to the lower end of the deca-millionaire class (start-up founders, corporate mandarins) when new, but then drop out into a void when sold used, because the single-millionaire class (finance, medical, lawyers) is hollowed out. Also the top 0.1%ers have a lot of competing claims for their time — they are cash-rich but time-poor. Boats are time-consuming.

Good points, I was just taking the Federal Reserve’s numbers for the generations in their table. They also make the same table for age cohorts. Not as neatly mapping to buyers and sellers (would be better to shift both 5 years older), but the Fed’s 40-54 and 55-69 cohorts are close. And the same number of years in both. When current sellers were buyers in 2000 they controlled 36.1% of wealth. The same buyers now control 20.7%.

One can generalize the cat market as Boomers selling to Gen X now, who will then be selling to Millenials in about 10-15 years. US Federal Reserve publishes a neat table showing wealth distribution across generations over time. Below percentages show what share of US household wealth was held by each generation at the same ages (33 and 47). 47 is the mid-point of Gen X now. The Boomers at 47 held 42% of total household wealth. Gen X holds 16%. Millenials are too young yet, but judging by their share at age 33, somewhere below 10% when they reach 47 seems likely. The implication is that today’s buyers have less than half of relative purchasing power at 47, compared to the sellers at that age. They will the try to resell to next generation’s buyers who’ll have half as much again. I think this answers a lot of questions about “why sailing is less popular” or “why doesn’t my boat sell” or “what resale value can I expect on the boat I buy today”. Happy Thanksgiving!

ARC 2019: Grainger 60 (Muttley) and GB 55 (Allegra) are ahead followed by Sunreef 60 (Deo Juvante), O 5X (BioTrek), and TS5 (Hallucine), with TS42 (Elektra) and TS5 (Amalia) also ahead of the pack. O51 (2 Canoës) and Lagoon 52 (Greatcircle) are on top of the pack with Catanas mixing it up with FPs and Lagoons mid-pack. Makes me like TS5 even more...

Has anyone installed one? Seems that it would be useful for anchoring, reef passages, docking (catamarans), maybe even spotting floating crap ahead. Ideally with infrared capability and obviously waterproof. Anything cheaper than FLIR?

Another slow day... I see a handful of Sunreef 62s popped up on YW. Not a boat I’d consider but the model seems pretty consistent over the years and there are 22 listed between 2008 and 2018 model years... enough for a chart! One way to look at the dispersion of prices is that boats are maintained differently and the best-fit exponential blue line (8.12% depreciation per year) is the unbiased way of looking at depreciation. Another is that sellers differ in their optimism about how much their boats are worth — there is no upper limit to that optimism while the true market line skims the bottom of the offered prices. Then depreciation is about 10% a year. Of course these are listed prices (ask), offer prices (bid) are somewhere below those lines, with traded prices in the middle.

    Extending an Outremer 49?

In thinking more about your “wave piercing bows are a fad” claim.... Apart from windage and thru wave motion, there is another consideration in favor of them: I think the reason why trimarans are easier/faster to sail than cats is the level of comfort you get from watching the leeward ama submerge. It is the best real time gauge of how close you are to the edge while you are still on the positive stability side of the envelope. Cats don’t have it — once you’re flying the hull it’s way past the comfort zone. A wave piercing leeward hull would give you a bit more information about where you are — when water starts going over the leeward bow you can calmly get off the gas with both hulls still in the water.

A lot of weatherproof outdoor security cams around. Need: 1. 12v 2. video signal that can go to the existing B&G MFD (not a must) 3. Infrared. Doesn’t need to be FLIR quality, more for docking, tight spots at night. Spotting UFOs is just not realistic.

Cat tails from over the horizon

Assuming a safety-minded objective of punching 7-8kt at max RPM to deal with inlets, tidal currents, etc (forget motor cruising), what hp is required for 10t, 15t, 20t cats? Is it even answerable?

Cat tails from over the horizon

Yes, 30hp seems like the sweet spot. With Yanmar the weight increases progressively though, no free hp for zero weight: yanmar engine only: 29hp 127kg 39hp 172kg 75hp 207kg 110hp 217kg 125hp 229kg so if you go from 29hp to 39hp you pay 4.6kg/hp. After that it’s <1kg/hp.

Ugh... then I’m with you for sure. sometimes I wander about buying an old Catana with bad engines and house systems, stripping all the crap out, putting in a couple Lombardinis. Would it then outsail an Outremer?

Cat tails from over the horizon

Here’s an even more radical mast-boom separation. Also a Lorima rotating mast. Not sure why booms should be attached. with you on the engines... whenever an ad says “engines upgrades to 110hp” it means the boat can’t sail... the incremental difference from 40hp to 75hp is probably small though.

    Extending an Outremer 49?

Well I don't know... For sure the added buoyancy is greater than the added weight. And more waterline length seems like the lowest cost performance enhancement. About the wave piercing bows... the market has spoken -- in the actual racing circuits where performance matters all bows are like this. It's better buoyancy/windage. It's better motion - not climbing up every wave. Your argument about going over a floating log perhaps has some merit, but it seems like the hull is going to be fked anyway, and these sacrificial forward bows seem easier to repair.
