    Extending an Outremer 49?

Here’s an idea... a. Outremer’s dull bows b. Lots of crap floating in 21st century oceans what about gluing on alumInum angle sections to O’s bows? Two birds, one stone. Can be made nice with some fairing, sanding, painting...

Looks like the AI component is the expensive bit. Wiring a regular FLIR would probably cost $1-2k

Cat tails from over the horizon

Could you share the info you’ve gathered about the Outremer lineage? 1. What’s the real difference between O55 standard and light? 2. Is O55 = O50 with longer sugar scoops? 3. Have you been on the O64 that’s been in a tsunami decades ago and for sale for the last 10 years? 4. Did you stock up on red or blue Gauloises? Any more general comments? Outremer looks like the default mass produced brand for those with aspirations of actually sailing while cruising.

Cat tails from over the horizon

I think that once you get the required hull rigidity the CF Layer is still too thin for CE specs (and possibly for abrasion/puncture). If you just make it thicker it’s an overkill for rigidity. For a sport boat you keep it thin for weight and repair the dings. For live aboard circumnav you add more thickness (weight) that negates CF weight savings. And I think CF really needs to be done right, not every yard knows how (repairs too I guess). But if facing a choice of fiberglass vs CF/Kevlar I’d take the latter depending on $$$.

Just a lot of work had to be done inside and outside, way over and above regular TLC. Reportedly the buyer was very comfortable with doing the work.

I think the best parallel to Porsche 911 are boats that managed to build a one-design class following. Think J-boats. If an active TS5 racing class emerged they could attain 911 status. Or if Outremer managed to organize an active circuit. Probably won’t happen. Another factor that boats bought at the start of this decade have to contend with are cheap pesos, rands, and Aussie tugriks... the chart shows Chilean (red), South African (white), and Oz (blue) currencies against the US dollar, normalized to 100 in 2011: The Rand costs at Bongers Marine are now less than half than in 2011... Marsaudon should seize the opportunity and take over the entire market with $500k made-in-Cape-Town TS5s...

    Coppercoat Redux

I’d rather not say more about the boat now, other than I’m considering how to structure the sea trial before the survey haulout so that there would be certainty at the point when the boat is on the dry and I can do the coppercoat there and then. There is still a lot daylight between the seller and me, but I am pretty certain it won’t sell higher than my offer, so it’s the question of the seller coming to terms with the price or not. I hear you on SpaceX! There’s been a lull in launches. The next one was supposed to be two weeks ago with 60 Starlink satellites, now in November. Good bye Iridium! By the way your PM inbox is full here. I sent a msg to your email (from my sv.lykke address) about Lord Dickie a few weeks ago but it’s probably in the spam folder too. I also heard a funny story yesterday about Bossa Nova hull being full of water a few years back.

Did you get it done? What was the cost in Cape Canaveral? Thinking of doing it in Ft Lauderdale, but everything seems to cost a lot more here...

Cat tails from over the horizon

Would be good to see any data... any race, even like ARC, or reliable polars?
  16. After looking at the design for a bit... The area just aft and on the same level as the salon is the equivalent of “cockpit”. This is where you have shade and standing room (and a wooden chair). The elevated area aft of that — on top of the cabin — does not need another layer of standing room roof. Nor the green “helm bench”. The two side benches are perfect for hand steering with a tiller, with full access to the winches and walk-on access to packing the mainsail in the lazy bag on top of salon roof. Ditch the green bench, ditch the second roof, lower the boom...
  17. So standing room in the salon with a walk out space on the same level in the cockpit. why on earth would you then raise the helm station and the boom even further? This is not just wasted mainsail area, it’s the higher heeling moment that drives the lee ama in the water increasing effective displacement... looks like one of those double decker charter cats...

    Older fast Aus multies

I have no dog in this fight, but here is Bottman suggesting something very cool (shadow an iconic race in a cool trimaran). Perhaps the word “rent” triggered negative reactions, which is unfortunate. I’d call it “looking for partners for a joint project to shadow sail a race, with all parties expected to contribute”
  19. Just saw the new video — looks beautiful, but why is the steering station (and therefore the boom and the mainsail) so elevated?

    Looking for DIAM-24s in NA

A racing group of 3-5 would be perfect for Biscayne Bay. I’d be in.
  21. Are they worth it? I understand the idea — a masthead lock removes the 2:1 halyard compression purchase from the mast, and a reef hook removes the 1:1 compression load from the boom. On my Weta the halyard lock made sense — the mast was a two-piece featherlight CF tube. On my 35’ Dragonfly the single like reefing was kind of neat actually, especially when singlehanding, which is 99% of the time. It probably added to the weight as the mast and boom were overbuilt, but compared to other loads it didn’t feel too bad, although the original first-reef clew block was undersized and did break (aluminum just sheared off). A 50’ cat with a modern CF rig I sailed on recently had the reefs locked with titanium Karver (or Anthal?) hooks, at $1 boat buck each. See the picture. It looked like a neat solution, but a bit fiddly both hooking and unhooking (not dialed in new system, and without experience on my part). So the question is, for a large 40’-60’ multi, are there examples of mast or boom failure from too much compression? I imagine most dismasting come from sidestay failure, but I don’t know, never been in one. Alternatively, are there examples of “oh sh*t“ moments when the masthead halyard lock gets stuck, or less critically when the reef hooks won’t engage/disengage?

“At any given moment, all sorts of objects are drifting in the ocean, a surprising number of them Americans. The Coast Guard plucks 10 people a day out of the ocean, on average. Another three die before they’re found. Which is to say that 13 Americans, every day, need to be hauled out of the water or off some crippled sailboat or sea kayak or paddleboard.” https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2019-10-15/lifesaving-coast-guard-scientist-reflects-on-government-service

    Halyard and reefing hooks

Yes, just feels wrong to pay $1k for a piece of metal without any moving parts... are there no remotely actuated soft shackles or CF hook + Dyneema loop solutions?
  25. Do you have a picture of this main halyard with loops in action?
