  1. Looking at a new Smart External regulator for my new LiFePo battery charging for my racing boat. The existing Balmar MC614 is over 10 years old and having trouble with it controlling maximum voltage levels once the battery is near 100% SOC with the BMS tripping out the charging(and the load relay). I have tried to changed the settings in advanced programming mode but does not appear to make any difference. I see the latest version does have a Lithium Ion battery selection charging mode. The battery and BMS equipment are all Victron. I would appreciate any recommended smart regulators which have a display of the charging status and easy to program, also an option would be great for setting to motoring mode to reduce the alternator output when require more power to the propeller for full motoring situations.

Smart Regulator for LiFePo Battery charging?

I had a read of the Wakespeed smart regulators on their website and they have a couple of nice features which I will need to investigate further by contacting them. One feature is a Seamart phone App for configuration on the regulator settings and the other is a data link to Victon BMS Equipment. The Vitron data link will save on shunt equipment and assume the charging current will be available and other voltages, battery temp to save on having to buy accessories for the Wakespeed regulator. There seems to be a lot of discussion on the Victron gear which I spent many hours integrating all their equipment being a DIY installation. There is no direct technical assistance here in Australia from Vitron as I was only allowed to funnel all my queries though a local supplier who is also an installer and unfortunately they new less about the Vitron gear then Indo. I will post some photos of my installation once I get the photos from my iPhone. There are some unusual actions with the Vitron BMS, ie on high voltage the loads anew disconnected which I am chasing Vicrron with this query.

    Melbourne to Devonport

I have had reports from boats that they registered at least 50 kt gusts on the race track!

    Melbourne to Devonport

I noticed the King Island airport had the SW front come through with gusts to 70 kts so hope the race fleet are prepared. I notice from the tracking some boats have obviously been hit hard by the font with some boats pointing at the Prom and others heading back to the heads.

    Vendee Globe 2020

I was thinking the same as the old HB would also be further optimised with new foils and using the new foil controls as allowed with the revised OMOCA rules. It was a pity that a VD globe sailor did not buy the old HB boat for this race.

    Vendee Globe 2020

From the weather forecast shown on the tracker, it appears the first 8 or 9 boats may restart the race so its going to be very interesting in the next couple of days once the leading 3 boats get their parking tickets!

The routing/chart software does not look like Expedition, does anyone know what software he is using? That is a great insight into an IMOCA routing software and his comments!

F.ck that’s one fast 33 foot boat and will break the Elliot 47 record, recheck your routing you arm chair sailor!

    Melbourne to Devonport

The race looks like being on the nose for the last two thirds of the race based on the current forecasts, will be not very comfortable for many of the boats and likely no race record being broken especially looking at the list of boats.

Agree with your comment but remember where Ken Read comes from, he certainly had no positive comments for ETNZ!

Smart Regulator for LiFePo Battery charging?

Thanks, these marinehowto website articles are perfect as the Balmar smart regulator target voltages do not allow low values but this website provides many tips on how to set up the settings for the Lithium batteries.

Looks like this boat will have a play with the SYC MC31, does not look like a rating boat!

    Vendee Globe 2020

AT is lucky to have some calm weather and warm temperature for the epoxy/carbon matt to cure before he enters the Southern ocean. It would be great to get some before and after pics of the repair. I would imagine AT is pretty good at these type of repairs and also he would have been trained well for this type of issue.

HB foils also look like they are more all round foils and may be better suited to heavy down wind conditions Such as in the Southern ocean. In heavy winds the HB foils could be more stable with any change in heel angle!

  17. I am looking at buying a new Ronstan series 160 standard furler for my code 0. I have had a look at the unit and it appears be a nice unit for the cost compared to the other units on the market, ie Ubi. Would appreciate any feed back on the Ronstan series 160 furler unit with a code 0 before I buy the unit to make sure this unit works well on a code 0. my boat is a 5,300kg 42 foot racing boat with a code 0 of approx 117 square metres. The Ronstan unit has a MWL of 3,000kg and BL of 6,000kg.

    Showtime capsize on return trip

I believe AS have completed their report on the keel loss but I do not think it has been released to the public yet! I have heard via Scuttlebutt that there is no clear blame to be had on why the keel failed, ie no issues with the design and construction works apparently.....

    Construction of a Pogo 50

I agree with you 100% on this area. I have gone through two electrical And instrument upgrades on my boat and the latest upgrade is to Lithium batteries. If I was having a new yacht being build I would put a lot o effort into this area including the charging(engine and hydro generator) systems as it is much easier to un all the cables while the boat is being build than later on. The same effort is required or the instruments, Autohelm, radios, radar, inverters for microwave ovens etc.

    Sydney to Hobart 2020

The CYCA have sent out a survey to all the entered competitors with various questions about if there were restrictions in Sydney and Hobart are the boat owners still keen to race. The restrictions are around having no friends and family to see boats off in Sydney and welcome boats in Hobart. There will probably be no prize giving ceremonies also. Good on the CYCA for trying their best to run the race in COVID times, but in the end it will be up the Tasmanian government to open up their borders!

I see that the AMS rating system has flagged the 2020/2021 re validation fees. I could not imagine AS offering IRC or ORCi free re validation fees!

    NMEA2000 to Fastnet (B&G) converter?

Another option is to use the Zues2 or 3 chart plotter as they have a N2K and 0183 interface (send and receive) which does work both ways.

    NMEA2000 to Fastnet (B&G) converter?

Go and check out the B&G website or contact your local B&G supplier There is a Fastnet to 2000 converter available which is only around $200.
