    Boats and foils comparison

We have 4 very different boats, which will be the best option ? ETNZ-sail-Live-Sail-Die6.webp

    AC75 vs F50 and Maxis

It is now official , we have a new F50, improved and more powerful version of the AC50. We already had discussions and comparisons with the AC75 in another thread but I think the comparison deserves another thread to try to answer these questions: - fastest in same conditions ? upwind ? downwind ? on a circuit? - more powerful ? - hydro drag comparison ? - aerodrag comparison ? - stability ? These are the most evolved concepts with Maxi trimarans, they represent the future of sailing and foiling using different concepts for different conditions. We live a fantastic time, this thread should try to compare the respective solutions and better understand it.

    AC75 vs F50 and Maxis

    1) The jib is valid IMO, TNZ had tried the AC50 without jib and came back with one, F50 still has one too. The jib dooesn't make the boat faster but easier to handle. 2) The code 0 is more questionable, the T35 is making test and we don't know what they have in races, the AC72 began with code 0 and did not keep it, the AC50 and F50 don't have any. Obviously the minimum wind limit did not require any on these boats. The AC75 is much heavier and may require it to get flying in the same wind range while the F50 don't, team have the figures. 3) The frictional coefficient of water vs air is so much more important that air that the faster these heavy boat get flying, the better. However as soon as they fly they go 3 or 4 for times faster than the wind so the code 0 must create lots of drag as soon as the boat speeds up. So best solution in light conditions would be to bring it down, same for the bowsprit. But these are reflexions without the figures that team have, we could even see an AC75 withoug a jib if they are as fast as their designers told us.

    AC75 vs F50 and Maxis

Yes, first ice boats replicated sailing boats with jibs, now look at the their high profile sails and position about 1/3 at the back. Doesn't remind you fastest present sailboats ?

    AC75 vs F50 and Maxis

Excepted in very light conditions or to get on the foils, but yes, with a few more knots I think this boat will be faster with a small jib. Fastest boats in the world, ice boats, don't even have a jib, C cats don't have jibs either, but it is still useful on a boat for easier tacks and gybes.

As Smack says, then stop to call it a national competition.

Why not, CIC meant that at the time (with very few exceptions like when a canadian yacht had to be repaired in the US)

No, they would just have to modify their design team. CIC at the time meant what I say.

Within the last few years: US (M&M), French (Verdier), Brit (Bernansconi). The other two I could name are Ray Davies (kiwi) who asked Verdier, for the best or the worse, to remove the ballast from his design, and Glenn Ashby (Aussie) who has always been very much involved. And this team is reunited with foreign money.

Agreed, I wish the AC stays a friendly competition between countries but to pretend it is by regulating sailors origin is a transvestite. The AC is a design contest and designers should be from the YC country.

That is an interesting comparison, still big differences. It will be interesting to see how they change within the next months and what they chose in april in Cagliari.

    Larry's AC50 Circus

Another foreigner in NZ, Artemis Technology designed and developped it, and yes Larry was nice to spend his money with Core. Don't know why you hate so much SailGP.

So the Froggie chose the Aussie ?

It could also be that they like emirati's money ? I would not blame.

You could also ask, why is the AC75 designer a Froggie ? why is team principal a Canadian living in Monaco with Italian and Swiss origins? why is Glenn Ashby an Aussie ? why is the main money provider from the Emirates ?
