    VOR '17-'18 - THE GAME

I had left GBO in my dust so bad I didn't even have him on my radar! But alas, not enough westing in the ocean for the good ship HB bites me in the ass! At least I made it out of the 40's on this leg!!! Good on ya GBO. I knew that I was toast when I was 10 minutes behind Your Mom near the start and the next morning I woke up and he went out and I didn't.

Wow, this group gets tougher and tougher.I got as high as 152, but I didn't go far enough west early in the leg and missed the incoming wind. Since I don't Zezo, that is my excuse.

    Hutspot..me neither..I have one at 4815, and one at 4856th. I was able to shoot the gap and pick up 500 boats. So, HB's finish = finished! 4856th 1436.4nm 4d 2h 39m 47s

It is going by too fast.. But we were out tonight in a 4KSB for a beautiful 6-10 knot breeze of beer can racing. TX Shorty!

    HB's 'new' boat thread

Hey dew, good to hear from you. Just make sure your wires to the running lights haven't failed yet from being jammed up inside the cabin liner. This was the FINAL circuit from the old panel that I've re-wired. I finally re-ran mine after seeing the chafe during the anchor lid work. I ran a new set of wires thru the v-berth and into the anchor locker via daylight I saw in the laminate in the sunlight, and sealed it up with 4200. I like the panel too..way overkill for our old boats, but big fun. I bet I am probably using about 65% of the breakers now..(I'd have to check..it is nice to separate the circuits at will). Will you be up in Solomons for Screwpile this year?!?!?! grrr..i am using an iPad for chartplotting in a LifeProof case. It is attached to a spring loaded RAM mount clamp. I usually attach it to one of the companionway handrails..Bright sun is a problem..my bimini has helped a bit. The clamp mount also lets me attach it to one of the main cabin handholds, but you need to be able to see that from the helm position. To move forward on that, I have ST40 instruments. I have been researching a ~$100 box that will take old-school SeaTalk and spew it over WiFi along with AIS data and send it to the iPad..I haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. I like having AIS data for the ships and tugs we see on the Chesapeake, but right now that is my phone with the mAIS app. Here is a link to the unit I am considering. https://www.tindie.com/products/Quarkelec/qk-a027-wireless-aisgps-receiver-with-seatalk/ I still do not mind getting on VHF Ch13 to chat with the pilots. They are usually thankful someone is paying attention to them rumbling up or down the Bay at 15-20 knots and want to chat for a minute.

no pics to update, but glassed in the core this morning, and did the first 'repair layer' on top after dremeling out and filling the gaps with West six-10. Good stuff...I can see lots more uses for that in the future.

HB details: 4459th 2908.3NM 8d 3h 40m 43s Leading the 'wanker fleet' with the next boat at 2547. Impressive sailing, all..and damn GBO must have grabbed a tow line to be up on the non-wanker fleet. Couple more legs, buddy!

anchor locker in works. Adding a tunnel for the chain, and redoing the core with Nomex.

Hahaha...yeah..it is a BOSS...I have a powerboat anchor on my sailboat...might test it out this weekend..Well..at least we'll detach the 4KSB from the dock. About damn time. Did a bit of electrical work to her in the last couple weeks. Got rid of the old analog gauges that had a 100(!) amp ammeter. C'mon, man! I am lucky to get to 10 amps with all lights and pumps running. The first pic is circa 2013. Still working on the anchor locker lid mods to accommodate the BOSS.

Ah haha haa hahahaha....here comes GBO..right back near me where he belongs. We'll have a race yet, GBO! (Except I hope to be on my own 4KSB this weekend, so who knows if I'll remember to check in to the race!)

Haha..GBO..you are only ten places ahead of me back here in the 40's..I look forward to our upcoming duel when I catch you!!

    My newest project

In the consumer market, I am finding LiFePo batteries that look like AA's in some rechargeable LED landscape type lighting. I had one in my shed light, but it ended up being cheaper to replace the whole unit than find a suitable battery replacement (i.e., a 1.2v NiMH AA was not a drop in replacement, as the LiFePo's are closer in per cell voltage to a 3.7v Lithium ion cell phone battery.) The solar panel tuned to the LiFePo would have probably fried the NiMH pretty quick.

The Discarded- Rescuing a Tartan 33

It means you need a bigger genoa to keep the bow down!!

    VOR '17-'18 - THE GAME

Well, I might have been racing out on a real boat today. We'll see if I can pick off a few boats! GBO needs to fuck up and fall back down here closer to the 40's where he belongs and then we'd have a good race!

The Discarded- Rescuing a Tartan 33

+1 what IB said, but I'd also just get a cross cut. Cruising boat dude..tri-radial dacon on a cruising boat does not compute to me. A cross cut might be 30-40% cheaper. Maybe I could justify it on a roller genoa since it is bigger and their might be a benefit from weight savings to justify the cost, but for a main, take the low road and get a cross cut. (I have a Quantum cross cut 2+2 made from Challenge 8oz-ish, that is going on 10 years old.) I try not to abuse my sails and it is holding up great. One reef at 20%, but I don't ever plan to take my 4KSB out of the Chesapeake. and +1 what Crash said. I used to work for Clarke back in the days before the internet.

It does..however, this is a 2000something Catalina 42 panel in a Catalina 30. I have no TV ( I get on the boat to get away from TV), the shower is a "Sun Shower" I hang from the shroud into the head window, and there is for sure NO electric head. The "Radar" switch is 20 amps, so it is strong enough to power the anchor washdown i just installed last summer..that is gonna be a huge upgrade to the bucket and a brush! I am probably only running 1/2 of the available circuits. The "shower drain pumps" actually runs the 12v cig lighter plugs for charging cell phones.

Can you even play golf this time of year that far north!???!!? Have you de-winterized your lawnmowers? I played hooky from work today and installed some new boat stuff.

You know, @Tunnel Rat, you are right. I was bitching and complaining early in this leg. The competition is fierce at all ends of the spectrum and that keeps us all sharp. I did the Zezo thing one go-around and it was too much work for me. This is a fun group to race with/against, even down here in SA 40-something rankings.

HB - 6788th - 16d 4h 30m 38s - 5, 527.7nm Thanks to the scorekeepers..truly a thankless job. @GrandbendOnt is gonna be on my ass the next leg after he let me pass him in the last few hours on this one..He came in too far north, and I was as hot as I could get at 90-110 TWA depending on the pressure for the last 12 hours. GBO, see you in the next leg across the Atlantic, I am sure we'll be fighting each other in the back part of the pack again!!

    HB's 'new' boat thread

Ok, well it is not ten years yet, but we are getting close and I am going to the dark side. The "flying skate/stingray" has been successfully mounted to the bow along with a new anchor roller. Elegua, the biggest difference is interior work, which I've chronicled pretty well, and new cushions for Mrs. Bitches to sleep on & main salon that I sewed as an old sail loft guy. We would not want to re-visit window rebuilds, re-wiring, shaft log/prop, stbd bulkhead replacement, re-bed deck hardware, anchor washdown, standing rigging, Catalina smile, still trying to solve the tiller post water leak, etc., which I am pretty sure is hanging out in this thread too. One thing I THOUGHT I would have done by now is sand down the gelcoat and paint the hull..but those are cosmetics..I've been messing around with a lot of mechanicals so cosmetics take a back seat. On the current agenda is anchor locker lid (that green leftover spray painted thing is plywood to keep the rain out while I re-work the anchor lid needs), and I probably need to pull the main hatch and rebuild it and re-bed the screws. However, If you want to come raft up next to my happy-ass with this anchor and 20' of chain, I expect no issues...

Stealth mode!!!?!?!?!??!?!?! No wonder I can't find any of you bitches! In about 24 hours, I will be avoiding Bermuda. Couldn't quite get west enough, so I am constantly 1 knot slower than all the westerners. As we pass the Chesapeake Bay, this will be the virtual fly-by of my IRL sailing grounds. We came out in a buddy's powerboat and did run into Paul Cayard and the Pirates of the Caribbean crew as they came to the Annapolis/Baltimore stop many years ago and talked to them just as night set in and they thanked us for coming out to support them in the middle of nowhere at roughly Tangier Island, VA.

"Drag Race" in the doldrums does not compute, but I guess it is all relative.
