The Discarded- Rescuing a Tartan 33

HD, I used the head sink which is under the port settee...when we did Vitamin Sea's Beneslow 343, which is laid out like yours, we tapped the head intake which is at the companionway, and installed the pump under the head sink...just a long hose up to the anchor locker, that's all. I might be getting a little soft...but one thing you already mentioned is how fucking soft and muddy the mud is around here..hence the wash down. Watch out, next thing you know I'll be getting an anchor roller and manufacturing a windless..I have a buddy in California that already fabricated one for a C-30.

Uh....hello? #1, when I worked in the sail loft, those Dutchman installs were a giant PITA (for me), I am sure the owners loved them! #2, My 12# Danforth with 20' chain will have to suffice for anchorage purposes which has been fine for a long time and does not require a windlass, but gets the deck dirty when anchored in only 10' of water...I DID install a saltwater deck washing system this fall...Whoop whoop!!! #3, I could hang a Honda 2000 off the transom to reduce noise aboard "IF" I had a 30A connection into the boat which I do not. #4, I did upgrade to Lewmar 30 self tailers when Defender had a BOGO deal at the Boat Show ( I shoulda bought 42's, but the 30's are better than the 22's they replaced). #5 (not necessarily in order) I did go to a 7/16" mainsail halyard to reduce stretch from standard 4KSB 3/8". #6, when I replaced the standing rigging I moved the backstay split up to 12' (instead of standard 6') to get more purchase on my squeezy and keep it from scapling me! And #7, No Junk On The Trunk..I plan to build me a nesting PT-11. Does that answer all the questions?? :-) Fuck, I go cruising on my 4KSB to get away from all this shit!!!!!!!!!!

Sloop..the issue was that the tool I needed at home for the car was on the boat..I 100% agree with you!

The boat is still floating...the solar panel that took a swim is still dead...need a new one. Worked on the car today since the weather was nice but stopped by the boat to check on her and pick up some tools I needed..I don't quite have two complete sets of everything I need between cars and the boat...maybe some day!

I am familiar with stack packs..not sure I need it on my 11'6" foot length.

Yeah sure, I could..I guess. I did cheap out and made the bimini out of aluminum frames, but, it should be plenty sturdy enough for solar panels. The issue is that since I took the bimini all way to the gunwale, I drop it on deck when we lower the mainsail so I can reach the boom and flake that stupid bitch. Maybe I 'cruise out my ride' with some lazy jacks or some shit.

Ajax, good idea. I had not thought about getting it up on the boom. As you know, we've had a gale or two here in the last few days, so my panel went flying and swimming, after I left it laying on the deck. I am just really looking for a battery tender since I have no shore power...and if I can deal with the larger panel, something to sit on deck at anchor to supplement the slow discharge from charging cell phones and bluetooth speakers, or the LED anchor light. I don't really have any other loads except the tiller pilot and VHF...I usually stow the panels when under way. I figured if I am buying a 10w panel at $25, why not buy a 30w panel at $50?

Do you really mean a 60 amp panel? I am currently shopping for a 10w or maybe 20w panel to replace my 3.2w (yes, watts not amps) panel that took a dive off the boat and shorted out this winter. My trusty old SunForce controllers from Amazon will handle up to 7 amps. I think a 20w panel is around 1.1-1.2 amps. Anyway, some of us have different electrical needs, I guess.

I am sure zeyang is into fertilizing nice young lady farmers that come for a ride on the boat while they are learning sailing. As long as he keeps sending pictures. Go the zeyang!

The daffodils are trying to sprout...I guess we had some warm days while I was in Key West. I laid some mulch on those bitches so they don't bloom too soon. I think last year they bloomed and then they got snowed upon.. might have been the year before. I am still ready for spring.

Checked on the boat this weekend...she has not sunk. I did need to de-leaf the cockpit since I am close to trees. C'mon spring!

Every time I think SA has turned into a shithole, the real world comes thru...thanks IStream. And also it reminds me that CA is not the cesspool that the rest of SA is.

Ajax, nice work..the only problem we've found on Pete's T-3000 is that it was getting hard to find parts for that vintage of Lewmars..like all the plastic parts subjected to the UV and elements. He bought some new 40s quite a few years back..only the primaries on the coaming though. Still has originals every where else that were not self tailing. The smaller winches didn't seem to get as loaded and break so often, or didn't have as much plastic to fail in the sun. Cleaning and regular service has taken care of all the smaller winches just fine. Anyone else found parts/spares for the older 40+ Lewmars??

bjp, he says solid glass, but pretty thin..he had to chisel out the old chunks of rotten crap on the inside that was laminated to the fiberglass, and then used a teak veneer on the inside for the replacement. I assume he stuck the veneer on to some type of marine plywood of similar thickness that he removed. He used West System to bond the new wood to the fiberglass cabin. He also says be careful in your selection of sealant...some stuff attacks those Beckson windows...he used 3M UV 4000, and said there are charts on the Internet to help you with selection. I personally used butyl tape to seal my aluminum frames to my cabin (I realize the Beckson's are plastic, hence the warning above), but butyl is cheap, easy to clean up and re-do if needed to later on. I think Ajax likes butyl too. I have re-done 8 windows and several deck fittings with it and have been pleased so far.

bjp, My Stepfather owns a 1982 Tartan 3000. I know he's ripped out one side of the portholes and repaired them..I'll ask what he found.

It is like 3 quarts of green antifreeze..which I have not changed since I did FWC in 2012-ish..so it is probably due anyway. I want to check water flow and obstructions and all that stuff which is easier to do in the back yard with a hose.

HD, So I did the water system and head, but not the engine. I actually want to drain the HX and bring it home to check it..I am on the third season since installation now and would like to see how it is holding up (I bought it for $25 on eBay!) The plan would be to plug the lines to the engine to keep the antifreeze in & put pink stuff on the raw water side before disassembly.

Hmm..OK then. Not sure what you did to piss off Scot...but I have enjoyed the details of your renovation of your cruising boat while I remain envious. I am thinking about winterizing my 4KSB this weekend. Vodka and Seafoam spray...check.

Indeed. Is that Zeyang in the middle of a taco convention? He always said, 'build the farm, and the chicks will show up', or something.
