    RORC 600 - Virtual Race

@Your Mom - I noticed that refresh button...is that new? I don't remember that from races before this one.? ? ? And thanks..20 minutes from the finish I whack refresh and it does in fact refresh the dashboard...lol

Yeah...+1 on testing the interface, and there are some differences between this one and the Vendee I just completed. Agree on mark/island roundings, you need to zoom all the way into 1NM scale to avoid hard bits and turning marks. The little projected line for your course does change based on zoom level. You may be clear at 2nm zoom, but at 1nm zoom you might be smacking into something. I also missed the start, but I pre-set myself on port tack and ended up down at marker #9 & on the hard near Guadaloupe, so that is really where I started..then I was headed toward Africa for a while too. Ah well..something to pass the time while I think about de-winterizing the 4KSB.

    RORC 600 - Virtual Race

I have always thought the VR Dashboard was a little quirky, but you cannot complain about free. Sometimes I have to click on the extension and reload the game more than once to get it to update the Dashboard. Have not tried it on anything except a PC. For middle of the night course corrections, app on my phone. I don't trek across the house to the computer anymore at night.

I guess I didn't pay enough attention to the VR Dashboard in teh Vendee. I can't figure out how to get it to display data every 10 minutes like Your Mom mentioned. When I first fire it up it gets a status, and then if I make any kind of course correction I get that in the log (bascially whack the big green checkmark in the game), but otherwise, I don't get any additional data in my dashboard..I did figure out how to see Friends on the map, and I saw myself on there too. Baby steps.

I have no idea what the polars are on these boats but VR is showing you sailing at 38°. That definitely seems pinched based on the 'green zone'...Good Luck, @Your Mom, you picked up a few spots with that move anyway. i'll see you and everyone else at the virtual bar in a day or two!

Wow. I had never noticed the Zezo map before. Do I have to follow myself to see myself on the map?

    RORC 600 - Virtual Race

@Laser1, I would assume you have to do that with a couple waypoints (also not turning more than necessary for a sailchange/maneuver slow down if you can avoid it) so you aren't stuck in that dumb 10 minute window waiting for the mark to turn green after you pass it then maneuver. Get the WP set as close as you can and let the servers turn you when you hit the waypoint. That is just my dumb guess back here in 37,xxx I have set up some waypoints to slice around #8. Looks like I'll come into it about 43° on port, tack, and come out at 41° on stbd if the forecast is correct.

    RORC 600 - Virtual Race

Well,, I was headed to Africa for a while. - would have been less trouble if I'd run aground - the recovery distance would have been a lot shorter.

Well..it was obviously French time. Totally forgot and went south for a while... Can I get myself "reset" at the Hospital boat ??? @Bump-n-Grind - If you hopped into the lagoon you could be doing 12 kts for a while!! .

    Retro Boat - Olson 30?

I know it is a 4KSB, but I modeled my reinforcements off the Olson BOD designs. I have jock straps on both sides of my Catalina 30. This picture is 10+ years old. I replaced that bulkhead in 2011 and kept the jockstraps.

    Retro Boat - Olson 30?

Ah, the Beam Of Destiny! Don't forget the Olson 29..kinda like a sister ship, but only 25 were built. It had both an elliptical rudder and keel...2 spreader slightly frac (like 15/16th) rig with masthead kite..also had an open transom so you could pull the outboard off easily. The O-29 around here whopped all variations of the O-30. All cool boats. We even had an O-25 racing locally back in the 90's. Keep up the good work Scooter.

1984 Catalina 30 Smile On the Keel?

What slick said...the anti-siphon should be above this in the water injection line. Follow the water hose back a couple feet from where it injects into that riser.

Vendee Globe 2020 - Virtual Race

I did the 1st leg of that Tara Ocean thing, and it was painful. An event that is only a few days might be fun like the RORC 600..

1984 Catalina 30 Smile On the Keel?

retro..good luck. Get the headboard under the sail cover, or you will rip the sail in two 12" from the top and have to go retrieve the headboard. Boat looks in reasonably good shape for an '84. I own #511 and keep working on her while I sail her. I have been lucky and not had to do the wood keel sump grind out yet, have a small smile I've filled & faired, but probably will do it the next time the mast is down and replace the mast blocks under the compression post in the bilge which tend to get water logged and rot. Keep the bilge 100% dry if you can. The comment about the anti-siphon is still an issue, even with FWC. The siphon break is in the galley cabinet next to the inboard sink. That raw water gets pumped into the mixer at the back of the manifold and into the muffler..sea water can work its way into the manifold if the siphon break doesn't work properly. Just replace it (i got a forespar marelon) and make sure it is mounted as high as possible.

Vendee Globe 2020 - Virtual Race

C'mon @Mid! You can still finish!!! @Shorthanded - I do like the little break we get with the VORG. Unless I forget to keep an eye on the next leg start time!

Vendee Globe 2020 - Virtual Race

Big fun especially the end, and it even gave me a little interest in paying attention to the real race. After the dig north and west in the Atlantic approaching to finish, I kept trying to stay north to hook into the double low pressure coming across..I kept manually adjusting course one degree at a time, letting myself sail a little deeper than I planned for a couple hours at a time to avoid a sail change and try to stay north of east, but it still wasn't enough. Instead of screaming in to the finish at 130° with Code Zero as planned, I ended up jibing twice in the middle of the night local time after getting below the layline to make the finish anyway. Couldn't quite run you down @klymen..good racing. Back in the real world we are supposed to get clipped by some snow in the US mid-Atlantic states today...longing for spring!!

    Catalina 30, dinghy needed

I cruised the Chesapeake with 2 adults and 2 kids on a C-30 with a Snark. At 11' long it did not go on deck. I was one of the kids, and at least I had a dinghy that sailed when the adults were having Cocktail Hour. When it was 'go to shore time', Dad paddled and Mom had the tiller. Not necessarily the road I'd recommend, and there are certainly more options now than in the 70's, but it worked. I still have the C-30, and I am trying to convince myself to knock down a few walls in my shop to create a large enough space to build a nesting dinghy some day. My Mk I has the traveler over the rudder post, so I have a clean cabin house to store a nested dinghy under the boom.

Vendee Globe 2020 - Virtual Race

+1 @PB2207 - When I started the race (late), I was close to @x2sea, and made a dumb jibe and now obviously lost days. So, here we are. Let's hope this little winter hurricane in the Atlantic shoves us all to the finish. Thanks again to @Tunnel Rat for still doing daily updates for us stragglers. IRL - I can't keep up with the tireless updates from all the Anarchists in the official VG thread, but I am really amazed how close the top 5 or 6 boats are heading toward the finish. Crossing jibes a day or two from the finish????!?!?!?!!? Great stuff!

NY to SFO the hard way

+1 on that! Wow..just found this thread. I know lots of good folks at HYC. They will take care of you..We are all ears on more details after you get some rest.

Squeaky, did it feel weird looking up and actually see a mast and sails?

Vendee Globe 2020 - Virtual Race

Yup..thanks TR. Sliding down in the rankings. I lost 75K boats today going more west...but I could not see pounding upwind a better option..It is easy to play armchair quarterback and make a bad guess. I may be on the wrong side of the Low now.

Funny..i have never gotten the Dashboard to work...I can't select a race in the drop down. edit - Oh...there are destructions that I never read....carry on.
