      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

      Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

  1. Would Would a Figaro not be too small and too slow? Why a full foiling multi? The MOD70 were/are simple to sail and fast without being full foiling. But without canting keels, the need to pull the boat must be much reduced? Do much more of the routine maintenance afloat. exactly
  2. This quote struck me as odd. I think the number of hulls definitely defines the race event in every way as multis redefined the AC in every way. I'm a little surprised to read that he would dismiss an overwhelming majority in favor for monohulls. A key marketing misstep? We want monohulls! No you don't. You want speed over everything else. Yet even there, he hedged... This is not a one and done RTW. They stop, they race in confined areas so the idea of going multi, because "We have the technology" would also diminish the in-port experience. ACs, 32s, and other multi foilers may be nimble, but I cannot see making a 60-70 ft tri that may be great for long sprints in the SO, be enjoyable to watch as they try to avoid each other and minimize tacks. Foiling 65s would make more sense since the foils could be retracted for in-port racing, yet extend once the boats past the rounding mark for the next leg (if the boats are not close). At the moment I am hoping they are truly able to field 8 boats for that will make it a great contest all around. In 2011 they launched the MOD70 and in October of that year they did their first inshore event called the Krys Match, just outside of La Trinite Sur Mer. It was spectacular. In some races the boats were crossing the start line at 25 knots and with each race they had 3 sponsor guests onboard! (sorry commentary is in French) 3 days of racing and at least three races per day. As for berthing, its not that big of a deal. The 70ft MOD were 55ft wide. These boats are very light and easy to dock side-to on a floating dock. Or, in La Trinite (a very small town in Brittany) they have a T dock solution with tri's stern-to on each side of the T. La Trinité is à sailing town and makes quite a living from racers so is set up to berth plenty of multihull/ part of the ORMA fleet was based there once I think. Setting up a race village with a temporary boatyard and dock for 8 15 metre wide multis in somewhere like Sydney would be a major issue if public acceess and proximity to transport, food etc were also a priority - and I'm sure those aspects would be on commercial grounds. Somewhat easier for 6 metre wide monos. I'd reckon this is a factor in many potential stopover locations - plenty have berthing and dockyard space but it's not typically located in areas that are public-friendly. Disagree. I'd say the boats are a lot more simple and no need to haul at each stop. The tris all sit in the water at La Trinite.

  4. Proven that he can get a boat on to the start of the VG pretty much single-handedly. Proven that he can get said boat to the finish against all kinds of serve problems- and of course most interesting to me because otherwise I would neither care in the first place nor remember his name in a months or so: Proven that he can communicate. all. the. time. Oh, there was something else: He can also race. Which is much more than others did. If Conrad wants to continue it's pretty much the point at which he has to decide if he wants to build his own company or of he wants to sign on with someone else. There is only so much he can do with his two containers in the shadow of the BP shed. Another 4 years of that, still tapping into personal resources? I don't think so. The good thing is that he should have options in all directions. Actual options, not just of the take it or leave it variety. There are arguments in all directions. Controlling your own destiny vs. tapping into existing knowledge/infrastructure is one of the usual ones. Right now without the rig being just the driver, stepping of the boat saying to the team "See ya all at the start of the TJV." should sound very nice. Had Boss enough of their limey and will they hand the contract to the friwi instead? I don't think so. Could ATR sign on another skipper, for another sponsor. Maybe. If the company wants to continue beyond Alex they need to find someone. And while Conrad is very close to the French he is much much more in the English world than just about any of them. And then there are also the french teams. Why not sign someone who did both EN and FR media very well, and broaden the hunt to more international sponsors than usual. Or companies that have significant presence outside FR. With Safran gone how about Airbus to throw out a name. A french speaking skipper is pretty useless to that kind of company. (Interesting that most of them can suddenly speak English once the VG is over. Still wondering if official VG media is to be blamed for that.) Communication is what sets him apart from the others. That is what makes him interesting to me. And that is why I hope to hear more from him in the future. Even if there is slightly less drama. Airbus sponsors the AC, they're part of Oracle etc. (oh the irony). And you have to understand that ALL of these big companies have been hammered time again by all these French skippers over the years for various forms of sponsorship. Being a skipper that speaks French and English is a plus but an IMOCA campaign is still an extremely tough sell in France and overseas.
  5. put them on with sikaflex 291 using a toothed trowel 1/8" or so in order to make sure you have good coverage and even thickness. then you need a lip of composite around the panel to make sure water does not get under it (which it will on a trimaran float. this can be sika'ed on as well. They will not last that long in that spot, and cannot be walked on regardless of what the literature says, both because they are slippery and also because they will break. When the time comes to remove them a "pinstripe removal wheel" chucked into a drill makes quick work of sika or any other sealant without hurting the paint underneath.
  6. HB is a unknown quantity to the French and that scares them. Most of the French boats trained out of Brest and Port Le Foret to get the bay weather systems and seas , HB did not? I still do not no why ? but it looks like its about to pay off if HB can finish and that is the hard one to do. Time will tell. The french boats train out of france, where they and their sponsors are from, and HB sails out of GB where his team is, and spends a good amount of time each year with a boat in Germany, where his sponsor is. HB had 2 boats for quite a while, a race boat and a promotional boat, but sold them all before/while building the new one, so he took the new boat to Germany on at least one occasion I know of. First of all HB does not train in Port Le Foret because he is not invited. The offshore school in Port Le Foret is invite only, so much so that not even all the french teams are invited. They train for boat speed, sail handling, and tactics/routing not really for the local weather. HB is faster on some points of sail and that is a fact, because it was designed that way. HB chose to optimize one point of sail and the other teams decided some where in-between. For example his mast is the farthest aft, the J2 attaches very low on the mast and his foils have the most lateral plan, unlike all others that have a large vertical portion. All this means great downwind and reaching performance but we will see that when they have to sail upwind HB will suffer compared to all the other boats. Life is full of compromises... I'm sure that should Alex and HB wish to join the guys sailing/training in PLF they would welcome him with open arms. At the same time, Alex has his own schedule and training program. Keeping his dynamic boat and foil design hidden from the competition might have also given him the edge with the guys; being the 'unknown element'.
  7. Stopped for a coffee on our drive down to Spain this morning, first thing on the TV news was an update on the VG.

  9. The queue to get down onto that dock is about 300m long and about 45 minutes to an hour wait from morning til night. Thankfully the race village is also fun to walk though, loads of interactive stuff for all ages including TWO IMOCA (in different places) to see on land. One is the old Aviva and the other was Aquitaine Innovations.
  10. There are a couple of large boats going out selling individual spots for about 200 euros. Fast running out though.
  11. Banque Populaire 8 just sold to Louis Burton (Bureau Vallee) for a VG2020 campaign starting next year. Lucky Louis! Now Armel, don't break it.
  12. Why would you? I did a lot of RORC racing at one time and never felt the desire to join RORC. Unless you live or work in central London, what's the point? It includes a yearly subscription to Seahorse magazine and for someone who moves around a 'lot', inc all over the USA it has great reciprocal with most decent clubs.
  13. The reason being that not all those guys are really media guys. So of the 14 racing there will a couple solo, (obligatory for VG entry qualification) a couple with 'real' media guys and a couple with pseudo media guys who are actually navigators/training/skipper sparring partners. Screws up the solo race factor IMO, hence the fuss.
  14. Race director Denis Horeau fired/quit last night (depends who you ask) and replaced by Jacques Cares.
  15. DIdn't see that slot #14 is open. That's great news for Enda and hopefully confirmation that he's in.
