  1. THE COURSE Course 1 Pennant 1, Start - Alvsborg Gate - Gaveskar gate (Leaving Mark) - Vassakaren to starboard – Botto to Port – Buskar Gate – Brede Baden to starboard – Trubaduren to Starboard – South Norway Virtual Mark to Port – Silderon East to Starboard - Aarhus Outer Laid Mark to Port – Silderon East to Port – NAM 22 to Starboard - Finish Course 2 Pennant 2, Start - Alvsborg Gate - Gaveskar gate (Leaving Mark) - Vassakaren to starboard – Botto to Port – Buskar Gate – Brede Baden to starboard – Trubaduren to Starboard – South Norway Virtual Mark to Port – Silderon East to Starboard - Aarhus Inner Laid Mark to Port – Silderon East to Port – NAM 22 to Starboard - Finish So first from Trubaduren up north, then south again to Aarhus. A round around a can, back north to the Kattegat. After that full throttle to the city The Hague with the port called Scheveningen. If you can pronounce that name like a true Dutchie you get a beer from me there . This is going to be a navigators feast picking your way across the North Sea full with oil and gas rigs, wind farms, and traffic that is one of the busiest in the world. Add a couple of TSS off the coast of The Netherlands which you must cross at an almost 90 degree angle and you get the picture. The difference between course 1 and 2 is marginal, just where the can is at Aarhus: in port or outside the port.

Indeed. The best case ever made for OD racing was that thrilling last leg of the VOR. The deal with the IMOCA organisation has been signed, sealing the fate of the VO65's. Details will come out on coming Monday according to the Tips & Shaft article. So the VG in 2020 and the VOR in 2021 with the same boats and adjusted rules. I have a bit of a hangover from the bbq last night so have to skip the inport .

Very interesting interview with Marcel, the architect of the leg win. The inshore route was in the picture 4 days before the start. Pascal asked Marcel to be more outspoken in his advice on the routing, and leave less room for doubts. Marcel also prepared a race performance overview of the fleet in which DFRT was clearly on top and told Charles and Pascal that they should be confident on their achievements. Superbe routing + superbe boat speed = the fastest boat on the planet. QED.

We had a row in The Netherlands regarding to maintenance cost for the boat, as it turned out that these were EUR 100K per year for a 15 meter boat. Paid by the government, while the ship is a gift from the public to the former queen of The Netherlands and private as such. The premier seems to have informed our parliament inaccurately regarding these costs. The former queen has now paid herself for additional maintenance up to EUR 300K plus..

Not surprising as the king has been sailing his whole life on The Green Dragon, De Groene Draeck. The private ship of his mother. Last year my sail team mate Peter encountered the king with his family on the water. They were anchored, and Peter had an engine failure on his sailboat. The surveillance police motorboat towed him to the harbour.

VOR The Hague has posted a statement regarding the remaining activities. These will continu, adjusted. The "RIB experience" is cancelled for today. RIBs will still be used for transportation though. The music will be less exuberant. In advance of the concert tonight a 1 minute silence will be held out of respect for the victims and their families. Source https://volvooceanracedenhaag.nl/update-ernstig-incident/

The program for Scheveningen has been cancelled for tonight due to an accident involving 2 RIBs in the harbour entrance. This after consultation with the municipality Den Haag. One fatality. Five man were missing but retrieved from the water. Full services alerted; police; the fire brigade including divers, SAR helicopter, ambulances and SAR boats. The cause of the accident is unknown. https://www.telegraaf.nl/nieuws/2232841/dode-door-aanvaring-tussen-twee-boten-in-scheveningen

My thoughts exactly, I also backtracked the tracker. That windfarm is a lot more south and Mapfre went SE before DFRT was at the windfarm. Also, the chart shows a 20 meter depth contour line to which both DFRT and Mapfre were sailing outside when Mapfre went SE. So the story about the windfarm and the shallows there contributing to going SE seem fetched, at least. Regarding the weather models, Pascal said to me he had used both Arpege and Hirlam. Maybe @shanghaisailor can pop the million dollar question to Capey if he knows Hirlam and used it for the last leg. And if he used it, why TBRU went to the Off-Friesland TSS. Arpege has a nice 0,1 degrees resolution for NW Europe. But is less detailed then the Hirlam model, which has the highest resolution I know for the Channel and the North Sea, a 2,5 km resolution. Gribs provided free of charge for both models at the links.

I was there on Sunday, first time ever in a media Center so I can not compare. Had a drink with the www.zeilhelden.nl team after the finish coverage was over. But finding it was hard without any signs so I walked past the MC and had to backtrack. Coverage of Scheveningen (in Dutch) is been done the whole week via https://www.facebook.com/zeilhelden/

FFS if I block someone they keep popping up. It seems there is no cut-off on the negative rep score in these forums. Even when it hits the likeliness of the Mariana Trench. Sigh. Back to ignore again. See you in 3 months or so. Go for the -1.000 I would advise, you are nearly there. Children ask for negative attention when they do not get positive attention enough. I cannot fix your youth as I am not a shrink nor a drugs dealer, and feel pity for you. * Out *

Nice post but a “side boarder” will get you the IKEA catalogue when you google that. Leeboard is the English word. It’s also a nice way to find out that you in the shallows. I once was as a student at the helm of our 23 meter one-off Groninger tjalk Pollux at the Waddenzee with light winds when the leeboard came up during the low tide. Our draft was a whopping 60 centimeters (yep you read that right) but we did not got stuck in the sand . Raising the leeboard was enough to continue our journey over the slack water or wantij in Dutch between the islands. A 4 meter keel is very, very unhandy in almost all Dutch waters and will get you no where except stuck until the KNRM tows you of the sandbank .
