      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

  1. Yep, this is enough for me to crawl out from my lodge in the Great White North as Coutts seems to forget the AC 33rd where he understood CIC. Maybe it's back to his dream of arranging the AC to suit his needs rather than the Deed of Gift. Maybe it's time for GGYC as the Trustee to put their boot to Coutts butt to bring back what the AC is really all about which is stated in the DOG before one even gets to the part of Mutual Consent. IMO if the AC has to take a break to remain true to it's donor's wishes that is a good thing for The Cup.
  2. Simon, Thank you for starting this thread and for your usual well thought out writing. Sadly, I've lost interest in the AC for many of the reasons you state. I've had this gut feeling of a Oracle Cup for some time now and now it's here in its worse form. It's a bitter pill to swallow as I supported Oracle in their battle against the Alinghi Cup. I enjoyed supporting Oracle from the point of being a traditionalist but open for something new to help the AC put sailing and the sailing community in the mainstream of sports participation. You nailed it on how I have always felt about the AC with "I believe that every single sailor dreamed of sailing in the AC not for the money, but because it was the ultimate challenge, because of the acknowledgement of the history and traditions. " Where the AC is headed is a sad commentary on what is driving sports management and athletes these days. Its especially disturbing to see the days of being a gentlemen and sportsman on and off the water in the AC disappeared all together only to be replaced with greed and power of a small few. Cheers, Neil

  5. Master link NORTH DESIGN SUITE SOFTWARE The North Design Suite is an integrated family of specialized software programs that brings unprecedented power and flexibility to sail and rig analysis. Each specialized program can interface with others within the suite, allowing North sail designers and engineers to virtually sail and test a boat in an infinite variety of conditions before construction. NDS significantly expands a designer's ability to test different sail and rig combinations and accurately measure results. Equally as important, NDS ignificantly reduces tuning and development time after launch. Compared to a traditional sail assembled from panels of flat sailcloth, a 3DL sail stretches less for its weight, holds its shape over a wider wind range and retains its designed shape longer. http://www.na.norths...33/Default.aspx - How is 3DL Made? http://www.na.norths...34/Default.aspx - 3DL Manufacturing Facts http://www.na.norths...35/Default.aspx - 3DL Q&A... 8. Master link - many thanks to pjh I've never seen a comprehensive list of books on the America's Cup. If anyone has seen such a list, let me know where to find it. In the meantime, let's make our own list. Here, compliments of the Great and Wonderful Internet, is a start: Coutts, Russell, Challenge 2000: The Race to Win the America's Cup Shaw, David W., America's Victory: The Heroic Story of a Team of Ordinary Americans -- and How They Won the Greatest Yacht Race Ever Stone, Herbert L., The America's Cup Races Rousmaniere, John, A Picture History of the America's Cup Rousmaniere, John, The Low Black Schooner: Yacht America, 1851-1945 Mitchell, Carleton, Summer of the Twelves Brooks, Jerome, E., The $30,000,000 cup : the stormy history of the defense of America's Cup Alvord, Douglas, America's Cup To the Third Power: The Inside Story of Bill Koch's Winning Strategies for the America's Cup by Paul C. Larsen The America's Cup (Great Moments in Sports Series) by Pat Ryan The America's Cup, 1970 by E. Wesley Oliver Illustrated Encyclopedia of World Sailing by David Pelly The Black Yacht by John Baxter America's Cup Trivia (Maritime Trinia Series No. 2) by Jon B Johansen Defending the America's Cup by Robert W. Carrick The America's Cup: The History of Sailing's Greatest Competition in the Twentieth Century by Dennis Conner The America's Cup 1987. The Official Record. by Bob and Ross, Bob Fisher Showdown at Newport : The Race for the America's Cup by Geoffrey F. Hammond Born to Win: A Lifelong Struggle to Capture the Americas Cup by John Bertrand Stars & Stripes America's Cup Cookbook by Dennis Conner No Excuse to Lose by Dennis Conner The Lawson History of the America's Cup by Winfield M. Thompson and Thomas W. Lawson Beken of Cowes. The America's Cup [the definitive big photo book. Amazing!] Coutts, R. & Larsen, P. (1996) Course to Victory. Auckland: Hodder, Moa Beckett. The kiwi boy comes up through the YC system and wins the AC. Gives credit to TS and his mates. Bevan-Smith, J. (1999) The Shape of Speed. Auckland: Reed Books. A history of the Farr/Bowler organisation. They have never won the big one? Why? I like all the dirt in this book. Was there more to Sir Peter than meets the eye? Conner, D. and Stannard, B. Comeback: My Race for the America's Cup. New York: St. Martins Press. Howe the Big-Bad-One got the trophy back to the Excited States. You have to hand it to Dennis! And Stannard (an Aussie) is a good writer. Bertrand, J. (1983) Born To Win. New York: Bantam Books. John is a bit up himself. Bondy hated the book. But oh what a tale of drama and intrigue. Besides, I rather like John Bertrand.
