Does your dinghy have a name?

Kind of a silly topic I guess, but I'm pondering where to put a name on the Flying Dutchman I'm cleaning up, and I got curious about whether or not most of the boats in this subforum get names. I figure dinghies in club and racing fleets may just have numbers, but a boat's a boat, so I imagine many have been named. So, does your dinghy have a name, what is it, is it on the hull, and if so, where? (Have a pic?) For what it's worth I'm considering naming her Assignment. (I'm working on Assignment this weekend har har.) She has drain flaps on the transom, and of course the rudder, so there's not enough open real estate there. Topsides aft is the most likely place I think. Not much room between the water and the sheer, but having it up towards the bow seems like it would look odd.

I know the place but haven't stopped there for fear of never finding my way out.
  5. There aren't many places your dollar will go farther than in eastern North Carolina, and the sailing grounds are phenomenal. Decent inland sailing near Raleigh as well, if you're not into going rural.

Does your dinghy have a name?

Gotta cut me some slack on the sail trim - I'm still figuring this boat out, and there are a lot of different ways to tweak and adjust, far more than I'm used to as a primarily keelboat cruising sailor. I think that was my second time out. I had missed something in routing the stays such that I couldn't get them tighter. Despite the lack of genoa halyard tension we had her moving pretty well and had a blast that day.

    It's a Flying Dutchman.

At first glance it seemed odd for the first listing in the Boats category to be a car, but this is actually filed appropriately.

As far as the DMV or USCG is concerned you can slap whatever name you want on the transom, and change it weekly if your heart desires. Now what Neptune thinks of that is another matter. I'd at least pour out a little of your beer when you apply the vinyl. For some reason this photo isn't loading upthread, so here's what I ended up doing. If you can't find me at the office, it's because I'm on Assignment.

Yikes. Glad no one was hurt (right?) and hope the boat can be fixed.

    "Different" monohull interior layouts?

This may not have any bearing on what you're contemplating but an unusual (to me at least) layout I came across was on a Sarabande 41, a French boat from the '80s. The dinette was aft under the cockpit (with the engine under the table), the galley was to port and nav to starboard amidships, and then there was a step down as you went forward to two cabins and the head. I've probably spent more time than would be considered reasonable pondering the pros and cons of it, but having never sailed/lived with it I can't really say how well it works in usage. It did make for a pretty tall/steep companionway ladder, and of course all the cockpit storage had to be all the way aft. http://www.brainchildstudiosnyc.com/downloads/boat.pdf

    Uglyboat Admiration Society Hang Out

Unless you're amidships. I admire the spacious roosting area for feathered friends. And the careful use of a large expanse of white space to ensure the overall design isn't too "busy."

  21. It'd still be a semi-custom project, so it would vary, but Sailing gave its best guess at a sailaway price as $2.8M. http://sailingmagazine.net/article-1998-surfari-50.html
