      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

  1. We have just released our Android version 1.14 that corrects two bugs we found in version 1.13 that caused problems on some displays. It fixes the Alternating Channel Data and a crash when accessing the Exp Com page. Harry
  2. NOTE! If you have downloaded Android version 1.13 of Ventus PRO you MUST download the newest version of Expedition, version 10.5.18, that Nick just released. There was a problem with 10.5.17 that caused the Alternating Data Channels to refresh very slowly. The iOS version 3.4 has been released by the APP Store and can now be downloaded. It also need Expedition version 10.5.18 for the new features to work correctly.
  3. We have just released our Android Ventus PRO version 1.13 with several important new features, and several small improvements. It can be downloaded now from Google Play * Ability to select new Active Course from your list of saved courses * Added three new data channels to display data from your sail chart; Sail, Sail Mark, and Sail Next Mark * When using and Alternating Data Channel the name of the data will now be displayed along with the actual data. When sending any of the Sail Data in an Alternating Data Channel the actual name of the sail will now be displayed instead of the Sail number Please Note: You will need to upgrade your Expedition Software to at least version 10.5.17 to take advantage of these changes, and remember to select the 3 Sail data channels in your list of channels that Expedition sends out if you want to view this data. We have also submitted iOS version 3.4 to the App Store. It may take from a few hours to a day or more before they release it. I will post again as soon as it is released. The iOS version already has the 3 sails data channels and the Course Command but this version now has the Data channel headings included in the display and the names of the Sail instead of just the number. Thanks to Nick for making this possible!
  4. Peter Isler is doing a webinar on Weather Routing in Expedition March 8th. Check it out if you are doing Trans Pac, or any other offshore racing this year. If you use Expedition his webinars should be required for your skipper and navigator! Check out the full schedule of his other upcoming Expedition Webinars. More info and signup at http://northu.com/Webinars/ExpeditionWebinars/tabid/44440/language/en-US/Default.aspx We have our pre Trans Pac Sale going now. Ventus PRO is available for $119.99 until the end of March.
  5. Ventus Navigation has just released version 3.1 of Ventus PRO with support to send data to a Pebble Watch. Along with the Ventus PRO update you will need to download instructions and the free Ventus Pebble app to load on your watch. <Available here>
  6. Between now and December 20th Ventus PRO is on sale for $99.99. Available at either the iTunes Store or Google Play.
  7. Hope you find them :-)
  8. Hitchhiker, did you get you Ventus PRO connected and working with your instruments?
  9. There are some very good people lined up to support the group and answer questions. Nick White of course, also Peter Isler, Will Oxley, Campbell Field, Wouter Verbraak, and Artie Means.
  10. There is a new forum for users of Expedition and Ventus. Several top Expedition users have signed on to help with user questions. http://expedition.boardhost.com
  11. As long as your instruments will send out the data via wireless you can certainly connect to Expedition that way through a standard router, we've run Expedition that way using a Windows pad. The connection from your instruments to Expedition doesn't make any difference to Ventus. All the Expedition data will be sent out via wireless to any iOS or Android devices you have running Ventus.
  12. Take a look at our Ventus PRO for getting all the Expedition data on deck or anywhere you want via your smart phone or tablet. Pretty well accepted by some of the top navigators around. www.ventusnavigation.com
  13. Ventus Navigation has just released iOS updates 9.11 for Ventus PRO and 2.1 for Ventus Navigator to address display issues resulting from changes in iOS 8. They are available now from iTunes.
  14. I think sometimes people get confused be names and definitions. For sailing and sailing instruments ground wind is wind relative to a fixed point on land or a boat anchored in the water, true wind is relative to the wind over water. Good explanation here: www.sailingworld.com/how-HP4John!Mc /instruments-and-real-angles
  15. B&G has a proprietary cable that they sell for about $100 US. This will come with a driver on a CD that you will load on your computer. It will auto load if you just start the CD. The cable has a little round 5 pin connector on one end that connects to your B&G processor and a USB on the end that plugs into your computer. Select H5000 in Expedition for the instrument system you are using. Check box on “use position fix” in Expedition if your GPS is connected through your H 5000 system.
