    Coolboats to admire

I've been following the Uglyboat Admiration Society Hang Out and have found that a number of cool boats end up on this thread - by accident or design (so to speak). I thought it might be time to start a dedicated thread for cool boat designs as well. Of course 'cool' is very much a subjective construct, so I guess some Uglyboats will end up in the Coolboat thread as well. Only fair I guess. I've long been an admirer of traditional wooden boats and so here's a design by Canadian, Paul Gartside of a 30 foot Cutter, which I dream of having built, someday. Could get a whole lot of modern, light displacement flyer for the same outlay I guess - but it just wouldn't tug at my heartstrings in quite the same way. She carries a lot of rag for her displacement. Paul has given her a bit more beam in an updated version of the design, so she stands up a bit better in a breeze apparently.

It's the idea of epoxy, the fundamentalist don't like. They'll get over it eventually.

    Wooden boats thread

For what it's worth, Bob my definition of 'compost' is - shit in the middle keeping two structural skins apart. Not sure it matters what the shit is - or the skins for that matter. A wooden boat is a whole different thing - unless the wood is sandwiched between structural skins of something else, of course.

Bloody shame we decimated the Kauri forests of NZL, back in the 19th/early 20th Century. It's such lovely wood to work and treasure.

Ha, ha. Apparently, they only ask the 'suspicious looking characters' those searching questions, Bob. :-)

Not quite 'epoxy' either, surely? More of one - less of the other? :-)

Two cold molded wooden sloops I admire. Similar dimensions (both 36' ers) and accommodations, by two well respected Kiwi designers. But one is MUCH prettier than the other - to my eye at least.

When good designers produce ugly boats.

Actually her hull lines are pretty. Shame about the accommodation.

The IMOCA 60's are undoubtedly fast, but not aesthetically pleasing. On the other hand, there are plenty of gorgeous looking more traditional boats which are plonkers, in terms of performance compared to these modern flat-bottom girls. In the words of Fatboy Slim - 'You can blow wit' this ...Or you can blow wit' that'. As has always been the case, it's your weapon of choice.
