      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

      Moderation Team Change   06/16/2017

After fifteen years of volunteer moderation at SA, I will no longer be part of the moderation team. The decision to step aside is mine, and has been some time in the works but we did not wish to announce it in advance for a number of reasons. It's been fun, but I need my time back for other purposes now. The Underdawg admin account will not be monitored until further notice, as I will be relinquishing control of it along with my administrative privileges. Zapata will continue on as a moderator, and any concerns or issues can be directed to that account or to the Editor until further notice. Anyone interested in helping moderate the forums should reach out to Scot by sending a PM to the Editor account. Please note that I am not leaving the community, I am merely stepping aside from Admin responsibilities and privileges on the site.

  1. I'm more than happy to pay but even if I sign up for a pay TV subscription (Foxtel), I can't see replays. When are these guys going to come into the 21st century and allow pay per view so we can watch things when we want to watch them? I did manage to watch the Portsmouth race through the AC+ app through a VPN but it seems to have gotten smarter and worked out that I was geo-dodging. It must be accessing the GPS on the ipad or something. While it is always my last resort, I will torrent it, but I can't find full replays on any of the usual sites. If Russel makes it this hard for a fan to watch, the general public it never going to see it. Dave
  2. Has anybody ever tried hydraulics to link the wand to the foil flap? Too much friction?
  3. ...something a bit more like this Airwick? The issue is that the most efficient way to operate the flap on the foil is by using a straight pushrod through the non-lifting foil. Also, moving a curved board when it is even partially loaded is problematic. One of the biggest challenges would be automatically uncoupling/reattaching the wand linkage to the foil when it is lifted/dropped while not having any slop in the system.
  4. So you ease the whole platform over over the foils to get it near the windward hull and then tack. That's some innovative thinking!.
  5. It looks like you will loose a lot of righting moment and probably won't be able to heal to windward enough to get the force vector to line up with the vertical foil so that only the fully submerged foil is lifting ....unless the vertical foil is ridiculously long. What about the idea in the attached sketch? It gives maximum righting moment and aligns the force vector. It just has the complexity, weight and time required to rotate and lift'/lower the foils at each manourvre.
  6. That makes sense. ....so Boat B can't force Boat A to pass to the left hand side capsized boat C and then sail themselves sail on on the right hand size of capsized Boat C.
  7. I would appreciate your thoughts on the following. On the attached sketch, boat A is overlapped inside boat B and both are just getting down to the bottom mark on starboard gibe. Boat C is capsized on the course. My questions: 1. Can Boat A call for water on Boat B to pass the capsized Boat C on Boat A's starboard side? 2. Can Boat B come up and force Boat A to go the outside of the capsized Boat C while Boat B sails the inside? I believe it comes down to whether 19.2a or 19.2b below take precedence. 19 ROOM TO PASS AN OBSTRUCTION 19.1 When Rule 19 Applies Rule 19 applies between boats at an obstruction except when it is also a mark the boats are required to leave on the same side. However, at a continuing obstruction, rule 19 always applies and rule 18 does not exist. 19.2 Giving Room at an Obstruction a A right-of-way boat may choose to pass an obstruction on either side. b When boats are overlapped, the outside boat shall give the inside boat room between her and the obstruction, unless she has been unable to do so from the time the overlap began. Obstruction An object that a boat could not pass without changing course substantially, if she were sailing directly towards it and one of her hull lengths from it. An object that can be safely passed on only one side and an area so designated by the sailing instructions are also obstructions. However a boat racing is not an obstruction to other boats unless they are required to keep clear of her or, if rule 23 applies, avoid her. A vessel under way, including a boat racing, is never a continuing obstruction. Boats have not been named to protect the innocent/guilty. Dave
  8. Make sure you clear your cookies in the process. I hopped on a Canadian proxy to catch the live stream but I was still detected as US until I dumped the cookie. Thanks react, I'm in. Had to pay 8USD to Larry which suits me just fine.
  9. This is giving me the shits in Australia! I'm more than happy to pay to watch a replay of the racing but I won't pay thousands for a pay TV subscription. My first mistake was to create an AC+ account. I thought the restrictions may only apply to the live broadcast and not the replay. I then logged out of my AC+ account, fired up my VPN (Private Tunnel) using a Swiss server. According to AC+ the Swiss get live streaming. I then created another AC+ account but it still new that I was in Australia and blocked me again. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
  10. I don't claim to be any sort of sailor but yes I have crewed a Murray 18 in 30 knots. We ended up dropping the main and coming in on the jib alone when the race was cancelled. The point I make is that winning a 49er gold medal is probably the best preparation there is for sailing an AC72. There are a lot of other skills needed when sailing with a large team but your helming skills will be second to none.
  11. What is flapping off the end of the foil at 25s in this video: http://www.americascup.com/en/news/3/news/16818/artemis-racing-flies-around-the-bay-on-big-blue
  12. Let me guess that you have never sailed a 49er in more than 15 knots
  13. Let me guess that you have never sailed a 49er.
  14. Who's racing? Not ETNZ as GD said that they will never line up against OR before the Cup. They might just low ride around the course
  15. It would be a lot faster if they painted that wing red
