      A Few Simple Rules   05/22/2017

Sailing Anarchy is a very lightly moderated site. This is by design, to afford a more free atmosphere for discussion. There are plenty of sailing forums you can go to where swearing isn't allowed, confrontation is squelched and, and you can have a moderator finger-wag at you for your attitude. SA tries to avoid that and allow for more adult behavior without moderators editing your posts and whacking knuckles with rulers. We don't have a long list of published "thou shalt nots" either, and this is by design. Too many absolute rules paints us into too many corners. So check the Terms of Service - there IS language there about certain types of behavior that is not permitted. We interpret that lightly and permit a lot of latitude, but we DO reserve the right to take action when something is too extreme to tolerate (too racist, graphic, violent, misogynistic, etc.). Yes, that is subjective, but it allows us discretion. Avoiding a laundry list of rules allows for freedom; don't abuse it. However there ARE a few basic rules that will earn you a suspension, and apparently a brief refresher is in order. 1) Allegations of pedophilia - there is no tolerance for this. So if you make allegations, jokes, innuendo or suggestions about child molestation, child pornography, abuse or inappropriate behavior with minors etc. about someone on this board you will get a time out. This is pretty much automatic; this behavior can have real world effect and is not acceptable. Obviously the subject is not banned when discussion of it is apropos, e.g. talking about an item in the news for instance. But allegations or references directed at or about another poster is verboten. 2) Outing people - providing real world identifiable information about users on the forums who prefer to remain anonymous. Yes, some of us post with our real names - not a problem to use them. However many do NOT, and if you find out someone's name keep it to yourself, first or last. This also goes for other identifying information too - employer information etc. You don't need too many pieces of data to figure out who someone really is these days. Depending on severity you might get anything from a scolding to a suspension - so don't do it. I know it can be confusing sometimes for newcomers, as SA has been around almost twenty years and there are some people that throw their real names around and their current Display Name may not match the name they have out in the public. But if in doubt, you don't want to accidentally out some one so use caution, even if it's a personal friend of yours in real life. 3) Posting While Suspended - If you've earned a timeout (these are fairly rare and hard to get), please observe the suspension. If you create a new account (a "Sock Puppet") and return to the forums to post with it before your suspension is up you WILL get more time added to your original suspension and lose your Socks. This behavior may result a permanent ban, since it shows you have zero respect for the few rules we have and the moderating team that is tasked with supporting them. Check the Terms of Service you agreed to; they apply to the individual agreeing, not the account you created, so don't try to Sea Lawyer us if you get caught. Just don't do it. Those are the three that will almost certainly get you into some trouble. IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DO ONE OF THESE THINGS, please do the following: Refrain from quoting the offending text, it makes the thread cleanup a pain in the rear Press the Report button; it is by far the best way to notify Admins as we will get e-mails. Calling out for Admins in the middle of threads, sending us PM's, etc. - there is no guarantee we will get those in a timely fashion. There are multiple Moderators in multiple time zones around the world, and anyone one of us can handle the Report and all of us will be notified about it. But if you PM one Mod directly and he's off line, the problem will get dealt with much more slowly. Other behaviors that you might want to think twice before doing include: Intentionally disrupting threads and discussions repeatedly. Off topic/content free trolling in threads to disrupt dialog Stalking users around the forums with the intent to disrupt content and discussion Repeated posting of overly graphic or scatological porn content. There are plenty web sites for you to get your freak on, don't do it here. And a brief note to Newbies... No, we will not ban people or censor them for dropping F-bombs on you, using foul language, etc. so please don't report it when one of our members gives you a greeting you may find shocking. We do our best not to censor content here and playing swearword police is not in our job descriptions. Sailing Anarchy is more like a bar than a classroom, so handle it like you would meeting someone a little coarse - don't look for the teacher. Thanks.

  1. Skosh, Congrats on home purchase. Most things said here are sound of logic. Draft stopping (air movement)>insulation. A good way to check for this yourself is to move about the house (esp perimeter) with a burning stick lighter and watch for the flame to dance. Penetrations are often the cause of heat losses One thing to keep in mind regarding insulating: insulation doesn't stop air. If you feel a draft insulation, stuffing fiberglass into the crack will not help you. Foam is good for stopping air and insulating. Use a small amount of foam to stop the air movement, then insulate with cellulose/fiberglass. If you are going to take this on yourself I recommend getting a foam gun (plus cleaning fluid) This allows you to use canned foam with effective application and significantly less waste. Repeat: with older homes stopping the air movement typically yeilds much greater gains than throwing on another fiberglass batt. A note about fiberglass batts: to get the rated R-value they must not be stuffed. A part of how they work is a function of the volume they occupy (don't compress) Good luck. Mark
  2. The gal is incredible, from one who is typically not a fan. The Newsroom turned me on to her music, and she has not disappointed. Katie Boeck (sp) https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwjWkuqLnf7PAhXL7YMKHeYeCDsQtwIIHzAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D6fi5ysr9cLA&usg=AFQjCNHf5zaifC7jiIxXCkWDwuHlWg4_SA&sig2=5x4QjtvEC3DYL3L3sTF54w&bvm=bv.136811127,d.amc
  3. I don't know about offshore racing these things, but I have raced against one in PHRF racing. It seemed slow. W/L, light doesn't seem to be a strong point for these things. Best of luck. Boat racing is fun
  4. Voodoo Chile Estimated Prophet Excitation-Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" Many others out there.
  5. I like the looks of the above. Can I get a second opinion on the map with the pink lines??
  6. Suj-Thanks for the rec. I have some options, just don't want to jump too soon. Be safe folks.
  7. Mark, Many thanks. Keep the info/best guesses coming. So much hangs in the balance with these sorts of things. Please keep the tracking/wind velocities coming. My boat is on trailer, mast up, cover on, in Deltaville (Lower Chesapeake.) Naturally I live 3 hours away from boat, so I am hoping to hear a forecast that would not lead me to lose a day during my busy season at work. Again, great thanks to Mark and others for help with the Wx. <<Buy his shirts, great shirts, outstanding deal>>>
  8. Dogs are now allowed on leash. Rule change for this year. No pet policy was out of step with our push for younger, family type members. I have not noticed any issues with dog waste in a bad place. We have placed signage in sail folding areas designating such. I think folks get it.
  9. Among the new shows, we are big fans of Alpha House, an Amazon original series. John Goodman is the senior Republican senator from NC, laughs ensue.
  10. For a travelling boat program, a 1t van cannot be surpassed.
  11. How many of you folks are coming to J/109 North American's in Annapolis? 167 Double Eagle will be there.
  12. <<Any readers planning to come to Annapolis for the 2011 NAs??>>
  13. The old bull and the young bull were standing at the top of a hill, overlooking the field of cows. The young bull says to the old bull "why don't we run down there and fuck one of those cows." The old bull replies "why don't we walk down there and fuck them all."
  14. Agreed, the bottom on that keel looks like it came off an alien craft. I understand they don't want kelp,crab-lobster-fish trap catching keels, no one does, but does it have to look like that? Is there a perceived IRC/ORR ratings advantage? Is that perceived to be faster than some sort of torpedo shape? Some combination of more lift, less drag, greater righting force, wider groove? There ought to be some reason the J-folks designed such a keel. Thoughts?
  15. Explain to me about having the sail area to go fast dw. 130 squares not that large, certainly nothing to write home about. Likely makes for reasonable performance nothing more. Or am I missing the boat?
